Double Team (Japanese: かげぶんしん Shadow Divide) is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation I. It is TM32 from Generation I to Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, as well as in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Effect

Double Team increases the user's evasion by one stage.

If powered up by a Normalium Z into Z-Double Team, all of the user's lowered stats are reset.

Double Team can be used as the first move of a Pokémon Contest combination, causing Agility, Quick Attack, and Teleport to score double the normal appeal if used in the next turn.

Generation IX

Pokémon Legends: Z-A

As the evasion and accuracy stats do not exist in Z-A, Double Team instead causes the user to become intangible at the spot where it was used, which causes all attacks to harmlessly bypass the user and makes it untargetable by further moves for its duration.

Compared to Protect and Detect, Double Team's intangibility means that Plus Moves will not harm a Double Team user but will partially ignore protection. To compensate, Double Team has a noticeable wind-up before its effect is triggered in contrast to the instant usage of Protect and Detect.

Upgraded to Double Team+ when the Pokémon reaches Lv. 13.

Meowscarada
7 8s Has the user create an illusory copy of itself while dashing in order to befuddle opposing Pokémon. If this move is used again, the user swaps places with the illusory copy. When this swap happens, or when the illusory copy's HP drops to 0, flower petals are scattered around, dealing damage to opposing Pokémon and leaving them unable to act for a short time.
Upgraded to Double Team+ when the Pokémon reaches Lv. 13.
Upgrade: Increases the time that the illusory copy remains before disappearing, and decreases the damage taken by the illusory copy.

Trivia

  • This move's Japanese name, かげぶんしん kage bunshin, is a reference to a ninja technique ubiquitous in manga, anime, and other fiction commonly known in English as shadow clone. A popular example of this is the Naruto series, where the main character, Naruto Uzumaki, has used Kage Bunshin no Jutsu throughout the series as one of his signature ninja techniques.
  • The move's description in the Stadium games erroneously states that it lowers the opponent's accuracy.
  • In Super Smash Bros, one of Greninja's victory poses has it use Double Team.
