Luxray is a quadrupedal Pokémon resembling a fully-grown lion. While its face, hind legs, torso, and the back of its front legs are blue, much of its body is covered with shaggy, black fur. The fur is longer around the shoulders and the base of the tail, and forms a mane on its head. The mane is larger on the male than on the female. It has yellow eyes with red sclerae, a blunt muzzle, and rounded ears with yellow insides. The eyes change to the color gold when using its ability. There are three yellow half-rings on the back of each foreleg. Its long, thin tail is tipped with a yellow four-pointed star.
Luxray has powerful eyesight that is capable of seeing through most objects, like X-ray vision. It uses this ability for hunting and keeping track of its offspring. However, this ability requires a lot of electricity to use. As a result, Luxray needs to sleep for long periods of time, sometimes into a deep sleep (as mentioned in Pokémon Sleep), in order to recover and store up more energy. Luxray live in packs, each having one male to lead them. As seen in Pokémon Concierge, like its pre-Evolution Shinx, Luxray can make parts of its fur glow.

Origin
Luxray and its evolutionary relatives seem to be based on the constellation Lynx, as well as the lynx in mythology, which medieval bestiaries sometimes depicted as a lion-like creature and was said to possess supernatural eyesight. It may also be based on the neighboring constellation, Leo.
Name origin
Luxray may be a combination of lux (Latin for light) and X-ray, referencing the mythological lynx's ability to see through solid objects.
Rentorar may be derived from レントゲン Röntgen (alternate name for the X-ray, named after its discoverer Wilhelm Röntgen) and 虎 tora (tiger), perhaps referencing the name "Tigris" (Latin for tiger) that Johannes Hevelius used for the constellation Lynx in his atlas.
