Badly startles the last Pokémon to act before the user.

Psyshock (Japanese: サイコショック Psycho Shock) is a damage-dealing Psychic-type move introduced in Generation V.

It is:

Effect

This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason: Check whether this move takes into account stat modifiers inconsistently, as with Foul Play and Body Press: stat stage modifiers of the target's Defense and non-stage stat modifiers of its Special Defense.
You can discuss this on the talk page.

Psyshock inflicts damage. Psyshock uses the target's Defense instead of its Special Defense to calculate damage. Otherwise, it is considered a special move: it uses the user's Special Attack, activates Mirror Coat and Maranga Berry (not Counter or Kee Berry), has its damage reduced by Light Screen (not Reflect), etc. It does not activate Toxic Debris.

Trivia

  • Psyshock is an attack that has appeared as the translated name of ねんりき Nenriki on many English trading cards in the Pokémon Trading Card Game since Generation I (starting with Base Set Abra), long before its actualization as a move in Generation V. Its effect induces paralysis.
    • Since the introduction of Psyshock, ねんりき Nenriki was translated as Psy Bolt, to match ちょうねんりき Chōnenriki being translated as Super Psy Bolt.
  • Out of the three moves that deal physical damage despite being special-based, Psyshock is the only one that is not a signature move.
  • Psyshock has the same description text as Psystrike.
  • In Conquest, this move has the same description as in Generation V of the core series, including the mention of it dealing physical damage. However, the split of physical and special damage does not exist in Conquest - there is only one attack stat and one defense stat, so all damage is in the same, single category.
