Super Smash Bros. series

Shadow Ball is Mewtwo's standard special move. It is chargeable and moves in a zigzag fashion. Mewtwo holds its hands the same way it does in Mewtwo Strikes Back when forming a Shadow Ball, but the ball itself has a unique design. The blue color of the ball resembles how it looks in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, while Mewtwo charges, any enemy that touches the charging Shadow Ball gets damaged. This was changed in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, where it no longer can damage opponents while charging. Mewtwo also uses Shadow Ball on its opponents when throwing them forwards.

Lucario, who debuted in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, uses Aura Sphere, which functions similarly.

Muk using Shadow Ball in Colosseum

• Due to Shadow Ball being a physical move prior to Generation IV, Shadow Ball is the only damaging move to have ever dealt damage in a different category from the target's defensive stat it lowers, excluding Max Moves.
• Shadow Ball was introduced in the animated series prior to the games.
• In Pokémon Colosseum, in Mt. Battle Area 10 in Battle Mode Singles as well as in Battle Now, Cooltrainer Cruik's Muk knows Shadow Ball, although Muk cannot learn this move until Generation IV.
• In Generation III and Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, Shadow Ball was the only Ghost-type move that could be taught via TM.
  • In Generation VIII, Shadow Ball is the only Ghost-type move that can be taught via TR.
• Shadow Ball is the only Ghost-type move to change damage categories in the transition from Generation III to Generation IV.
  • While Night Shade also became a special attack, it is a fixed damage attack and is therefore not affected by the change in damage category.
