Acerola (Japanese: アセロラ Acerola) is the Trial Captain of Thrifty Megamart's abandoned site on Ula'ula Island. She is also a Ghost-type Trainer and a member of the Alola Elite Four.

In the games

Acerola is a friendly young girl who is the Captain of the trial of the Thrifty Megamart's abandoned site on Ula'ula Island. She is an orphan who lives at the Aether House, where she plays with the children and Pokémon that live there. Acerola is the last living member of an Alolan royal family.

Acerola first appears in Malie City's library, which her father once owned, where she helps the player and Lillie find a book about Alolan Legendary Pokémon. Afterwards, she directs the player to their next trial on top of Mount Hokulani.

In her trial, Acerola asks the player to investigate the abandoned site, using their Poké Finder to take photos of the Ghost-type Pokémon making mischief there. At the end, they must defeat a powerful Totem Pokémon, a Mimikyu.

She later appears as a member of the Alola Elite Four, having taken on the position after Island Kahuna Nanu turned it down.

Pokémon

Acerola's Pokémon are kept in Ultra Balls.

Malie Library
"Is this what you're looking for, Princess? Give it a read!"
"Isn't it great? My dad's books are all great!"
"Yeah, it belonged to my dad. I know I don't look it, but my family used to be pretty much royalty."
"I had to have all my dad's books moved here so they didn't get ruined by the Pokémon. I can tell you lots of other old stories about Alola, too! You interested?"
  • If talked to again
"Oh! You're a trial-goer! You're just a few steps away from the trial at Mount Hokulani! Well, a few steps and a bus ride, that is. You can catch the bus from Route 10."
"She's just like a real princess, don't you think? All frilly and sweet smelling..."
Malie Garden
"And so is Acerola!"
"<Player>! You made it through Sophocles's trial, huh? That's really great! You can take on the next trial up past Route 11. Through Tapu Village, you know? If you get lost on your way, ask a police officer for directions. They're here to serve, right?"
"Now, Lillie, you're coming with me to do some shopping!"
Aether House
"I'm ba-a-ack, everybody!"
"Ha ha ha! Looks like I finished up my shopping spree right on time! You've already met everyone?"
"I left her with Hapu. They should be coming soon."
"So why don't we get those trials done first? You did know I'm the captain, right?"
"My trial takes place at the abandoned site where the supermarket used to be. I'll wait out front of Aether House to show you the way, if you'd like!"
Route 15
"Oh! Lillie!"
"What's the matter? You look all worn out. Do you want to rest at Aether House awhile?"
"And you, <player>! We can reach my trial site from Tapu Village. Come on, follow me!"
Tapu Village
"The old supermarket where I hold my trial is right down this way. Down Route 14!"
Route 14
"Here we are! Climb up these steps and my trial begins!"
"The time has finally come, <player>! So, I guess I should explain what kind of trial this is, huh? This old building is full of lots of Ghost-type Pokémon. Did you know? Here's where the trial part comes in. You've got to find the Totem Pokémon of this site and snap a shot of it with a Poké Finder! The totem is a bit of a trickster, and it likes to play hide-and-seek and mess around. If you take pictures of the other Ghost-type Pokémon inside, it'll definitely come out to get in on the fun and have its photo taken, too! So, if you see something weird happening inside this old place, try to check it out. I bet you'll find a Ghost-type Pokémon causing the mischief, so get its photo before it's gone! I'll just borrow your Poké Finder for a sec. Hee hee! And your Rotom is a Ghost type, too! We just do this, and..."
"There! I've set it up to use a special shooting mode just for this trial. You'll only be able to use it at this site, though. As soon as you enter the building, your trial will begin. Got it? And you can't catch any of the Pokémon, either. And you can't leave without giving up, too, so make sure you're ready for anything!"
  • If talked to again before entering the Abandoned Site
"As soon as you enter the building, your trial will begin. Got it? And you can't catch any of the Pokémon, either. Also, you can't leave without giving up, so make sure you're ready for anything!"
  • If the player tries to leave the Abandoned Site
"You want to give up on my trial?"
Yes: "Got it! Then make sure you're ready and try again!"
No: "Got it! Then do your best!"
  • If the player restarted the trial
"Hey, <player>! You gave up last time in the middle of my trial, huh?"
"The Ghost types in that old place are pretty tough to take on, huh? Remember that Ghost types are weak to other Ghost types and Dark types, too! I'm sure you'll make it this time! Don't give up on my trial yet! I believe in you!"
"As soon as you enter the building, your trial will begin. Got it? And you can't catch any of the Pokémon, either. Also, you can't leave without giving up, so make sure you're ready for anything!"
  • If talked to again when defeated by Mimikyu
"So, <player>! You gave up on my trial last time, huh?"
"Mimikyu is a pretty tough opponent, isn't it? It's a Ghost- and Fairy-type Pokémon. Did you know? Neither type has a lot of weaknesses, so it's tricky to beat. You probably want to try Ghost- or Steel-type moves against it. I'm sure you'll beat it this time! Don't give up on my trial yet! I believe in you!"
  • After defeating Totem Mimikyu
"Welcome back, <player>! I can check your pictures right away. Now let's see how you did... Yup! That's Mimikyu all right! It's pretty hard to catch it on film, so this is a really great attempt! Which means..."
"If you want to use a Ghost-type Z-Power, then you've got to move like this!"
"And since you passed my trial, <player>, you now have my permission to catch Pokémon in the trial site. So, in that old building there. Here you go!"
"It's not a bad idea to have some Ghost-type Pokémon on your team!"
"What's that? You say the Poké Finder just started up on its own, during your trial? Oooh, cut it out, <player>! You're trying to scare me, huh? You'll have to come up with something a bit more believable than that! There's not even any room in the back of that shop, for starters! How gullible do you think I am?"
"Brrr! I feel like I'm getting chicken skin... Like a chill going through me for some reason..."
Route 15
"Hey! Are you guys OK?!"
Aether House
"We can't forgive this!"
"Darn it, those numskulls actually did something pretty clever for once!"
"Team Skull has taken over Po Town... It's basically their private playground now. If you're gonna go, though, try to find this guy on Route 15 who's wearing a kimono... He might be able to help you get to Po Town."
Po Town
"Uncle Nanu!"
"Aue! I'm so sorry... You must've been so scared, huh?"
"Thanks, <player>! Really! You're really something!"
"Uncle, you're a great police officer, aren't you? I really hope that you're keeping a good eye on things here! What else do you stay here for, if you're not putting a stop to Team Skull's shenanigans?"
"That's what you say. But it's really all for the Pokémon, isn't it? You could depend on the Aether Foundation to look after the Pokémon that Team Skull hurts, but you stay here to look out for them, huh?"
"Come on, Yungoos. Let's get you back to Aether House!"
"I'll come back to see you again soon, Uncle!"
"Then come by Aether House when you're done! Alola!"
Aether House
"We're home! We brought Yungoos with us, too!"
"Wha... What's going on in here?!"
"But why? What happened?"
"What?!"
  • If the player did not leave with Gladion
"Can I trust you two to go and save Lillie? Every time I leave, Team Skull attacks this place. I have to protect these kids!"

  • Before battle
"Nanu said maybe he can't refuse a tapu choosing him to serve as kahuna... But he'd be darned if he had to serve as one of the Elite Four just because some guy asked him! So I guess I'll just have to battle hard enough to make up for his not being here!"
  • Upon being defeated
"I'm...I'm speechless! You've done me in!"
  • After being defeated
"Phew! Well, there goes my hope of beating you to smithereens and becoming Champion myself!"
Upon entering the Hall of Fame for the first time
"You really do love your Pokémon with all your heart, don't you, <player>?"

"I'm...I'm speechless! How did you do it again?!"
  • After being defeated
"Being in the Elite Four is fun, but so is being a captain... Hmm, I'm not sure which to do..."

Acerola in the anime

Acerola debuted in Why Not Give Me a Z-Ring Sometime?. She is close friends with Ula'ula Island residents Piko and Nene, who refer to her as "Big Sis". She read them a story regarding a mischievous spirit known as the Greedy Rapooh and later went for a walk with them. During the walk, they came across Team Rocket, who had accidentally released Greedy Rapooh, which was actually a Gengar, from the shrine that it had been sealed in.

Acerola found herself kidnapped by Greedy Rapooh, who then began to steal various items despite her requests for it to stop. Her Shiny Mimikyu, nicknamed Mimikins, eventually rescued her from Greedy Rapooh, which resulted in them falling to the ground. Greedy Rapooh then started begging Acerola to take it with her, offering her all the items in its possession, but she refused, believing her work at the library to be more important and valuable. Throwing a tantrum, Gengar tried to forcibly take Acerola with it, but she was saved by Team Rocket, who had followed Gengar in an attempt to get back the Darkinium Z it had stolen from them. Having seen Team Rocket saving Acerola, Nanu chose to give them a Z-Power Ring, allowing them to defeat Gengar. Later, a sympathetic Acerola told Gengar that it could come to visit her at the library from time to time, filling it with happiness. After Nanu had let Team Rocket keep the Z-Power Ring, Mimikins gave Jessie a Mimikium Z as a gift.

In Tough Guy Trials!, Acerola met Ash, who had traveled to Ula'ula Island so he could challenge Nanu to a grand trial. After realizing that Ash was tricked into taking care of Nanu's Alolan Meowth while he left to be lazy somewhere else, Acerola took Ash to her library, where she read a story about "the Blinding One". When Nanu arrived to find his missing kendama, which Acerola had stolen to lure him to her, he was forced by Acerola to accept Ash's challenge to battle him. She later refereed the battle between Ash and his Lycanroc against Nanu and his Krookodile, which Ash lost. When Nanu told Ash he wasn't ready to face him and should just return to Melemele Island, Ash refused and decided to stay on Ula'ula and train for a rematch. Later, at Ash's request, Acerola suggested they go and see Tapu Bulu so it could help Ash.

In Some Kind of Laziness!, Acerola took Ash through Haina Desert to meet with Tapu Bulu at the Ruins of Abundance. There, she watched Ash train with Tapu Bulu to get stronger for his rematch with Nanu. In A Battle Hand-Off!, Acerola accompanied Ash to the Thrifty Megamart so that Ash could participate in his next trial. After arriving, Acerola refereed the battle between Ash and Pikachu against Jessie's Mimikyu. In Guiding an Awakening!, Acerola refereed the grand trial between Ash and Nanu. After Ash won, she bade him farewell as he headed back to Melemele Island.

Acerola appeared in a flashback in Filling the Light with Darkness!.

In Full Moon and Many Arms!, Acerola watched the sunrise alongside Nanu, with Tapu Bulu watching from nearby.

In Securing the Future!, Acerola joined the rest of Alola in showering Necrozma with light so it could return to its true form.

In A Haunted House for Everyone!, Acerola arrived at Melemele Island for a visit. She reunited with Ash and met his classmates for the first time. She then helped them build a haunted house for Lana's twin sisters Harper and Sarah. The presence of Mimikins ended up attracting several Ghost-type Pokémon, including a Mismagius who put everyone to sleep and created several illusions.

In Battle Royal 151, Acerola greeted Ash and his classmates when they arrived at the Manalo Stadium. She was revealed to be among the 151 Trainers taking part in the Battle Royal preliminary round of the Manalo Conference. She competed with her Shuppet, and was ultimately among the 16 Trainers still standing in the end. The match-ups for the next round revealed that she would be battling Kiawe.

In The Battlefield of Truth and Love!, Acerola went up against Kiawe, using Greedy Rapooh against Kiawe's Marowak. She ended up losing when Marowak retrieved its bone from Greedy Rapooh and knocked it out. In SM135 and SM136, she watched the battle between Kiawe and Gladion in the stands. In SM137, she was also seen spectating the battle between Ash and Guzma.

In SM139, Acerola attended the award ceremony for the winner, only for it to be interrupted when a Guzzlord arrived at the stadium through an Ultra Wormhole.

In Securing the Future!, Mimikins joined the rest of Alola in showering Necrozma with light so it could return to its true form.

In A Haunted House for Everyone!, Mimikins accompanied Acerola to Melemele Island and visited the Pokémon School. Ash and his classmates were turning it into a haunted house for Harper and Sarah, but Mimikins' presence attracted several other Ghost-type Pokémon.

Mimikins occasionally reappeared by Acerola's side throughout the Manalo Conference arc, although it never actually battled in the tournament.

Gengar, nicknamed Greedy Rapooh (Japanese: 欲しがりラプー Greedy Rapooh) and sometimes shortened to simply Rapooh (Japanese: ラプー Rapooh), is a Totem-sized Pokémon that Acerola befriended in Why Not Give Me a Z-Ring Sometime?r. Acerola first met Gengar when it broke free from a shrine that Team Rocket accidentally unsealed it from. When Acerola tried to scold Gengar and stop it from causing trouble, it took a liking to her and kidnapped her. It then stole a large variety of objects, including Team Rocket's Darkinium Z, in an effort to have Acerola stay with it, but to no avail.

Team Rocket later saved Acerola with the help of Nanu, their new Z-Power Ring, and Black Hole Eclipse. Gengar initially felt rejected by Acerola, but after being told that it can visit her in the library she works in at any time, it happily accepted the offer.

In Securing the Future!, Gengar joined the rest of Alola in showering Necrozma with light so it could return to its true form.

In The Battlefield of Truth and Love!, Acerola was revealed to have caught Gengar, using it in her battle against Kiawe during the Manalo Conference. However, it was eventually defeated by Kiawe's Marowak.

Greedy Rapooh's known moves are Shadow Ball, Shadow Punch, and Thief, and its Ability is Cursed Body.

Acerola in Pokémon Adventures

Acerola was first mentioned in Flash and Cosmog's Secret by Mallow, who considered asking Acerola and Ilima to join her, Kiawe, and Lana in raiding Team Skull's base. Acerola properly debuted in Shipwreck and "Oh, What Sharp Teeth You Have, Bruxish!", where she found an unconscious Sun and Lillie on a beach and took them to the Aether House to recuperate.

In A Photoshoot and the Abandoned Thrifty Megamart, Acerola introduced herself to Sun and Lillie and took them to the abandoned Thrifty Megamart. She gave Sun a trial and tasked him with photographing the Totem Pokémon that lived inside the building. While Sun did the trial, Acerola left to go meet with Mallow's group. Later, she received a photo of the Totem Mimikyu from Sun, who had successfully completed the trial.

In PASM17, Acerola, Kiawe, Mallow, Lana, Ilima, and Hau arrived at Po Town. Their presence alerted Team Skull's boss, Guzma, who demanded to know why his base was being invaded. When the Captains revealed they only wanted to talk, Guzma agreed on the condition they made it to him first. He then summoned a Pheromosa, Celesteela, and Guzzlord and had them attack the Captains and Hau. Despite their best efforts, Acerola and the others were completely outmatched by the rampaging Ultra Beasts.

In PASM18, Sun arrived at Po Town, only to get caught up in the commotion. Annoyed the Captains were still fighting, Guzma revealed a Cosmog and had it open more wormholes. Gladion appeared, demanding to know where Guzma got the Cosmog and Ultra Beasts from. Revealing his true aim is to destroy Ultra Beasts, Gladion battled the beasts Guzma summoned with his Type: Null. To everyone's shock, Gladion also revealed the Aether Foundation's president, Lusamine, was the one who gave Guzma Cosmog as part of her plan to create a paradise filled with nothing but Ultra Beasts and herself. Eventually, the beasts broke out of Po Town's barrier, allowing them to wreak havoc on all of Ula'ula Island. Acerola and the other Captains headed off to various locations to evacuate any innocent civilians caught in the beasts' attacks.

In PASM22, Acerola, Sophocles, Molayne, Professor Kukui, and Gladion fought off a Celesteela and Guzzlord at Route 10 to prevent them from reaching Hokulani Observatory. Gladion easily defeated Celesteela and later defeated Guzzlord to prevent it from hurting Lillie.

In PASM26, the Trial Captains and Island Kahunas were revealed to have spent six months on Exeggutor Island training to prepare for another clash with the Ultra Beasts. After their training was finished, Acerola and the other Captains went to Hokulani Observatory under Molayne's orders. Once they gathered together, Acerola and the others traveled to Mount Lanakila, where a wormhole had opened up earlier. Shortly after they arrived, their ship was attacked by a group of Aether Foundation Employees and their Ultra Beasts. During the battle, Acerola was assisted by Tapu Lele, who transported her to Akala Island in order to battle with some Kartana.

After training with the other Trial Captains on Exeggutor Island, it evolved into a Palossand.

Trivia

  • Despite Acerola referring to Island Kahuna Nanu as "uncle", they are not related, as stated on page 174 of the Pokémon Sun & Pokémon Moon: The Official Strategy Guide. "Uncle" and "Aunty" are often used as a label of endearment and closeness of a person of non-familial ties in Hawaii.
  • Acerola is the only Trial Captain who is not battled under the Trainer class "Captain"; the only one who is also a member of the Elite Four, and vice-versa; and the only one who does not participate in Mina's trial.
  • Acerola is 4'9" (145 cm) tall.
  • According to official artbooks, like Phoebe, Acerola can communicate with Ghost-type Pokémon.
