Brendan (Japanese: ユウキ Yūki) is the male choice for the player character in Ruby and their Generation VI remakes Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. He also serves as the rival in the same games if the player chooses to play as the May. His female counterpart is May.
Brendan (Japanese: ユウキ Yuuki) is the male choice for the player character in Ruby and their Generation VI remakes, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. He also serves as a rival in the same games if the player chooses to play as his female counterpart, May.

Terminology
He is named Brendan (Japanese: ユウキ Yuuki) when he appears as a non-player character in the Generation III games and their Generation VI remakes. He is also known by Brendan in Pokémon Masters EX.

He is known as Orlando (Japanese: オメガ Omega) in pre-release media for Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, including the Special Demo Version. He is named  ラルド (Rald) in some screenshots of Emerald on the Japanese Nintendo website.

In the core series games
As the protagonist
If Brendan is selected as the player character, he starts his journey moving from his home in Johto to his new home in the town of Littleroot in Hoenn. After saving Professor Birch from a wild Pokémon, he is given one of the three first partner Pokémon of the Hoenn region. Brendan develops a close bond with May, and eventually Wally, who both act as his rivals. Brendan goes on to gather the eight Badges of Hoenn, stop the plans of Team Aqua/Team Magma and conquer the Pokémon League all before going off to face the Battle Frontier.

As a non-playable character
If Brendan is not selected as the player, he is helping his father Birch finish the Hoenn Pokédex and becoming a Pokémon Professor. He is also the player's rival and friend. Along with May (when playing as Brendan), they are the only rivals unavailable for battle after entering the Hall of Fame. Additionally, they both are the only ones to not evolve their first partner Pokémon into its final form, except for in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, where their first partner Pokémon have been fully evolved by the battle that takes place after the credits.

In the games
Both of Brendan's parents appear in the video games, his father Professor Birch and an unnamed mother. In Emerald, he also has a younger brother who also lacks a known name. He is neighbors with the player character and their family.
Role
If Brendan is selected as the player character he starts his journey moving from his home in Johto to his new home in the town of Littleroot in Hoenn. After saving Prof. Birch from a wild Pokémon, he is given one of the three starters of the Hoenn region. Brendan develops a close bond with May, and eventually Wally, who both act as his rivals. Brendan goes on to gather the eight Badges of Hoenn, stop the plans of Team Aqua/Team Magma and conquer the Pokémon League all before going off to face the Battle Frontier (in Emerald).

If Brendan is not selected as the player, he is helping his dad finish the Hoenn Pokédex and becoming a Pokémon Professor. He is also the player's rival and friend. Unlike other rivals (except for May when playing as Brendan), he gives up being a Trainer, making them the only rivals unavailable for battle after defeating the Elite Four. Additionally, they both are the only ones to not evolve their starter Pokémon into its final form, except for in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, where their starters have been fully evolved by the battle that takes place after the credits.

Optional names
:"I'm heading back to my dad's Lab now. <player>, you should hustle back, too."
In the game, two of the optional names—one in Ruby and one in Sapphire—refer to "land" and "sea" respectively. In the English version, these are Landon and Sean; in the Japanese version, リクヤ Rikuya and カイト Kaito (陸 riku means land and 海 kai means sea). This is also the case in other languages. Additionally, in the English version, two of the shared names—Terry and Seth—seem to be influenced by the same theme.

;Professor Birch's lab
In Emerald, if the player leaves the name writing screen without any written name, or with a name composed entirely of empty spaces, Professor Birch says "So it's <optional name>?", suggesting one of the 20 available names. The player may answer "Yes" to accept the suggested name, or "No" to return to the name writing screen.
:"Huh… So you got a Pokédex, too. Well then, here. I'll give you this."
:"You know it's more fun to have a whole bunch of Pokémon. I'm going to explore all over the place to find different Pokémon. If I find any cool Pokémon, you bet I'll try to get them with Poké Balls."

Dad-I mean, Professor Birch-told me you were the kid of a Gym Leader, and I sort of hoped you'd be a guy. My name's Brendan. Well, I guess we are still neighbors, so... Nice to meet you! Let's be friends, OK? Huh? Hey, <player>... Don't you have any Pokémon? If you want, I can go catch you one. Aw, wait, I forgot... I'm supposed to be going out to help my dad catch some wild Pokémon. Some other time, OK?"
Brendan appeared in The Vision, where he was first seen battling several Team Magma Grunts with his Sceptile while infiltrating the Team Magma Hideout, before running into Courtney. She then challenged him to a battle with her Camerupt just as Maxie and the rest of Team Magma headed for the Seafloor Cavern aboard Submarine Explorer 1.

;Route 103
Much like the other player characters depicted in Pokémon Generations, Brendan doesn't have any lines of dialogue.

Later in The Scoop, a trainer was seen battling and catching Deoxys with Mega Rayquaza, although due to the trainers hidden face, it can't be 100% confirmed this was the same Brendan from The Vision.

Optional names
Trivia
In the game, two of the optional names—one in Ruby and one in Sapphire—refer to "land" and "sea" respectively. In the English version, these are Landon and Sean; in the Japanese version, リクヤ Rikuya and カイト Kaito (陸 riku means land and 海 kai means sea). This is also the case in other languages. Additionally, in the English version, two of the shared names—Terry and Seth—seem to be influenced by the same theme.
* In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Pikachu wears Brendan's headband from Emerald as an alternate costume. Also, the Pokémon Trainer has an alternate costume with a similar color scheme as Brendan's Emerald outfit.
* He and May are the only set of player characters who have a chance to speak with both a mother and a father in the games.
* Before Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Brendan and May were the only rivals whose first partner Pokémon does not reach its final form.
* In the fandom, Brendan's knit cap has commonly been mistaken for white hair. Although largely obscured by his headwear, Brendan's actual hair is visible in most depictions, usually black in color.
* While the second battle with Brendan (or May if he is the player character) is optional, the encounter leading up to it is not.
** Therefore, after returning the Devon Goods before encountering Brendan or May in Rustboro City, if the player blacks out without ever visiting the Pokémon Center in Rustboro City (which causes the player character to rush to Petalburg City's Pokémon Center instead), the encounter and optional battle take place in 104 in front of Mr. Briney's house instead.
* Similarly to May, Brendan's attire in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire is mainly based on his appearance in Emerald.

In the anime
Brendan's only anime appearances are small cameos in the movies, appearing in the openings of Jirachi: Wish Maker, Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea and Giratina and the Sky Warrior. Brendan seems to be a strong battler, as his cameos suggest he spends time in Battle Towers. In all of his appearances, he has appeared with his Ruby and Sapphire outfit.

Like in the games, he has the starter Pokémon that weakens May's (May has a May while he has a Swampert). It is unknown if his relatives are the same as that of the games, where, as May is Norman's daughter (as the player is), Brendan would be Professor Birch's son. However, Brendan has never been mentioned by him.

In the manga
There are five different manga counterparts to Brendan: Ruby from the Pokémon Adventures manga, Ruby from the Pokémon Ruby-Sapphire manga, Rald from the Pokémon Battle Frontier manga and Omega and Alpha from the Pokémon Omega Ruby Crimson Passion and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire Indigo Wisdom manga.

In the TFG
Next Quest, based on a blue recolor of this character's usual clothes, appears as a common Trainer figure in Next Quest, the launch set of the Pokémon Trading Figure Game. There is also an unreleased figurine based on him from the cancelled Groundbreakers expansion, named Groundbreakers (one of the default names for him in Pokémon Ruby and Emerald), who wears the same outfit as Brendan does in Ruby and Sapphire.

Brendan (Japanese: ユウキ Yuuki) is the male choice for the player character in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald and their Generation VI remakes, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. He also serves as a rival in the same games if the player chooses to play as his female counterpart, May.

Terminology

He is named Brendan (Japanese: ユウキ Yuuki) when he appears as a non-player character in the Generation III games and their Generation VI remakes. He is also known by the same name in Pokémon Masters EX.

He is known as Orlando (Japanese: オメガ Omega) in pre-release media for Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, including the Special Demo Version. He is named ラルド (Rald) in some screenshots of Pokémon Emerald on the Japanese Nintendo website.[4]

In the core series games

As the protagonist

May and Brendan after the events of the game

If Brendan is selected as the player character, he starts his journey moving from his home in Johto to his new home in the town of Littleroot in Hoenn. After saving Professor Birch from a wild Pokémon, he is given one of the three first partner Pokémon of the Hoenn region. Brendan develops a close bond with May, and eventually Wally, who both act as his rivals. Brendan goes on to gather the eight Badges of Hoenn, stop the plans of Team AquaSEAS/Team MagmaREOR and conquer the Pokémon League all before going off to face the Battle FrontierE.

As a non-playable character

Brendan as the rival

If Brendan is not selected as the player, he is helping his father Birch finish the Hoenn Pokédex and becoming a Pokémon Professor. He is also the player's rival and friend. Along with May (when playing as Brendan), they are the only rivals unavailable for battle after entering the Hall of Fame. Additionally, they both are the only ones to not evolve their first partner Pokémon into its final form, except for in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, where their first partner Pokémon have been fully evolved by the battle that takes place after the credits.

Both of Brendan's parents appear in the video games, his father Professor Birch and an unnamed mother. In Pokémon Emerald, he also has a younger brother who also lacks a known name. He is neighbors with the player character and their family.

Optional names

In the game, two of the optional names—one in Ruby and one in Sapphire—refer to "land" and "sea" respectively. In the English version, these are Landon and Sean; in the Japanese version, リクヤ Rikuya and カイト Kaito (陸 riku means land and 海 kai means sea). This is also the case in other languages. Additionally, in the English version, two of the shared names—Terry and Seth—seem to be influenced by the same theme.

In the TFG

There are three Trainer figures based on Brendan. They are versions of Brendan with the same design, but with different colors. In all figures, Brendan uses his sweater and backpack from Pokémon Emerald, and his pants and shoes from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.

  • Brendan (Japanese: ユウキ Yūki) from Next Quest, wearing clothes with blue in place of the red or orange colors from the other figures.
  • Landon (Japanese: リクヤ Rikuya) from Groundbreakers, wearing clothes with the color palette from Ruby and Sapphire.
  • Sean (Japanese: カイト Kaito), from the Unnamed Third Set, wearing clothes with the color palette from Emerald.

The Brendan figure is part of the single released set, Next Quest. The other two sets were not released, so the Landon and Sean figures were not released either.

Pokémon the Series

Brendan's only appearances in Pokémon the Series are small cameos in the opening sequences of movies, specifically Jirachi: Wish Maker, Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, and Giratina and the Sky Warrior. He is shown to spend time in Battle Towers. In all of his appearances, he has appeared with his Ruby and Sapphire outfit.

Unlike in the games, he has never interacted with May. It is unknown if he has ever met her, or even if his parents are the same as in the games, as neither Norman nor Professor Birch has mentioned him.

Pokémon Generations

Brendan appeared in The Vision, where he was first seen battling several Team Magma Grunts with his Sceptile while infiltrating the Team Magma Hideout, before running into Courtney. She then challenged him to a battle with her Camerupt just as Maxie and the rest of Team Magma headed for the Seafloor Cavern aboard Submarine Explorer 1.

Brendan appeared in the Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire Animated Trailer, where he was first seen sleeping in his house in Littleroot Town. A Treecko comes by and wakes him up. Trivia

  • In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Pikachu wears Brendan's headband from Pokémon Emerald as an alternate costume. Also, the Pokémon Trainer has an alternate costume with a similar color scheme as Brendan's Emerald outfit.
  • He and May are the only set of player characters who have a chance to speak with both a mother and a father in the games.
  • Before Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Brendan and May were the only rivals whose first partner Pokémon does not reach its final form.
  • In the fandom, Brendan's knit cap has commonly been mistaken for white hair. Although largely obscured by his headwear, Brendan's actual hair is visible in most depictions, usually black in color.
  • While the second battle with Brendan (or May if he is the player character) is optional, the encounter leading up to it is not.
    • Therefore, after returning the Devon Goods before encountering Brendan or May in Rustboro City, if the player blacks out without ever visiting the Pokémon Center in Rustboro City (which causes the player character to rush to Petalburg City's Pokémon Center instead), the encounter and optional battle take place in Route 104 in front of Mr. Briney's house instead.
  • Similarly to May, Brendan's attire in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire is mainly based on his appearance in Pokémon Emerald.
