The Master (Japanese: 長老さま Master) is the leader of the Dragon Tamer clan, a secret society of Dragon Tamers that worships Dragon-type Pokémon. He lives in the Dragon's Den, which is located north of Blackthorn City in Johto.

In the English release of Pokémon Crystal, he is the leader of the dragon-user clan. In Pokémon Adventures, he is known as the Dragon Clan Elder.

In the games

Lyra and the Master in HeartGold and SoulSilver

When spoken to for the first time, he will give the player a quiz to evaluate their care for their Pokémon. After the quiz, the Master will reward the player with a Dratini, which will know the move ExtremeSpeed if all questions are answered correctly. In Pokémon Crystal, this is the only way Dratini can learn this move. It is obtained at level 15 in all games.

Two of the Master's descendants are Lance and Clair. Both of these Trainers are capable battlers who also specialize in Dragon-type Pokémon. Sometimes, they will come to the cave and visit their relative.

Gold, Silver & Crystal arc

The Elder first appeared in Debonaire Dragonair, telling Clair about Suicune after its battle against her at Dragon's Den, making Clair realize that Suicune was searching for a worthy Trainer for itself.

Black & White arc

In One Way or Another, the Elder appeared in a flashback, having invited Drayden to train Iris and approving him taking her under his care.
