Gurkinn (Japanese: コンコンブル Concombre) is an old man introduced in Pokémon X and Y. He is the grandfather of Korrina and the descendant of the first Trainer to Mega Evolve a Pokémon.

Gurkinn appears in Pokémon X and Y as the Mega Evolution guru, the grandfather of Korrina and an acquaintance of Professor Sycamore. He first appears in the Tower of Mastery where he explains Mega Evolution to the player and after the player beats Calem/Serena in a battle, gives them the Mega Ring.

"Oh? You must be <player>, then. Sycamore told me you would be coming. I'm called the Mega Evolution guru. I guess you could say I'm an acquaintance of his. Oh, but Mega Evolution guru isn't my real name, of course. Now, come here for a moment, will you?"

"Hm? Only one of you? I thought he gave five kids a Pokédex. Isn't there anyone else with you?"

"People call me the Mega Evolution guru!"

"Please to meet you, Sycamore's pupils! But there are still only three of you, huh?"

"What's this, now? Were you the one who found that Intriguing Stone?"

"Well, who found it doesn't really matter. What's important is that you were honest. If you tell lies, the truth is clouded and eventually lost... And while we're being honest, that Intriguing Stone is just an ordinary rock."

"Hm? Sure a lot of hubbub out there. Does that mean everyone has arrived?"

"Hmm! Looks like everyone is finally here."

"This is my granddaughter Korrina. She's Shalour City's Gym Leader. So, Sycamore's pupils. Now that you're all here... I suppose I should explain Mega Evolution to you. I assume you all know about Pokémon Evolution?"

"Indeed! Mega Evolution is a transformation of Pokémon that were thought to be unable to evolve any further! It's a whole new level of power!"

"There's a reason why I used the word "transformation" a moment ago. Mega Evolution differs from Evolution because it ends after a certain amount of time. In other words, it's a temporary Evolution."

"To make Mega Evolution work, you need two items: a Mega Stone for the Pokémon and the Mega Ring, which has a mysterious stone set in it, for the Trainer. Since Professor Sycamore entrusted each one of you with a Pokédex, I would like to give these items to all of you... I'd like to share them with you, but..."

"Sorry, but presently, I have only one Mega Ring... It's a very precious item. That's why my research isn't getting anywhere... So, I want all of you to decide among yourselves which one of you will be the one who challenges the Mega Evolution successor."

"Well then, <player>! First, you should challenge Korrina, the Gym Leader. "

"You don't really need to go to all the trouble of comparing—every living creature is unique. But still, having someone to compete against and aim for greater heights with is a very fine thing. "

Pokémon the Series: XY

Gurkinn debuted in a flashback in Mega Revelations!, where he presented Korrina with her very own Key Stone. He told her that in order for her Lucario be able to Mega Evolve, she needed to go to Geosenge Town and find a Lucarionite there.

Once Korrina arrived in Geosenge Town with Ash and his friends in The Cave of Trials!, they found a cave where the Lucarionite was said to be held. After defeating the Blaziken guarding the Lucarionite, Gurkinn appeared and revealed the battle was a test to finish Korrina's training. Proud that his granddaughter passed, Gurkinn awarded Korrina the Lucarionite.

In The Aura Storm!, after successfully Mega Evolving her Lucario, Korrina used her Mega Lucario against Ash's Pikachu. When the strain of the transformation caused Lucario to go berserk, Gurkinn sent his own Lucario out to stop Korrina's Lucario. Later, Gurkinn decided to teach Korrina a lesson as to why their Mega Evolution went wrong by challenging her Mega Lucario with his own Mega Lucario. Gurkinn's Lucario easily had the upper hand the entire fight, while Korrina's Lucario went berserk once again. Gurkinn had his Lucario knock out Korrina's, turning it back to normal in the process. Gurkinn scolded Korrina for the failure to control the power of Mega Evolution before sending her on a quest to Pomace Mountain, where an old mentor of his could teach Korrina to master Mega Evolution.

The group arrived at the Tower of Mastery for Ash's Gym battle with Korrina in Origins of Mega Evolution!. They also met up with Gurkinn, who informed them about the Tower of Mastery's long history with Mega Evolution and the closely guarded 'Scroll of Secrets'. Team Rocket went on to steal the sacred scroll, which Korrina managed to retrieve following a battle. Gurkinn agreed to finally reveal the scroll's contents, which turned out to be a disappointment for the others as it was just a series of basic rules written by Gurkinn.

In Showdown at the Shalour Gym!, Gurkinn refereed the three-on-three Gym battle between Ash versus Korrina. While Korrina was defeated, Gurkinn congratulated his granddaughter on her excellent battle performance and mastery of Mega Evolution. Afterwards, he suggested Ash should challenge the nearby Coumarine Gym next.

He appeared in Clemont's flashback in The Future Is Now, Thanks to Determination!.

In Master Class is in Session! and Performing a Pathway to the Future!, Gurkinn was seen watching the Gloire Master Class Pokémon Showcase alongside Korrina and her Lucario.

In A Diamond in the Rough!, Gurkinn refereed the battle between Korrina and Alain.

Gurkinn in disguise

In A Festival Reunion!, Ash and Goh met up with Gurkinn when they visited the Kalos region. After Goh tried to catch his Lucario, thinking it was a wild Pokémon, he gave Goh some advice on catching Flabébé. Later, he and Goh watched Ash and Korrina's World Coronation Series tournament battle. He explained Mega Evolution to Goh when they witnessed Korrina's Lucario Mega Evolve, and later congratulated Ash for winning the battle.

In An Adventure of Mega Proportions!, Gurkinn refereed Korrina's battle against a Trainer and his Quilladin. He later took Ash, Goh, and Korrina to Mega Island in search of a Lucarionite for Ash's Lucario and left them. He later reappeared disguised after they found it and battled Ash and Lucario with his Mega Alakazam. Once Lucario was able to reach the Lucarionite, Gurkinn removed his disguise and congratulated Ash.

In Toying With Your Motions!, Gurkinn watched Ash's match against Leon alongside Korrina and Bea.

Character

Gurkinn is compassionate, but maintains a stern exterior. He lives a disciplined life based around maintaining his family's legacy at the Tower of Mastery and association with Mega Evolution. He has high expectations for his granddaughter Korrina, who is the latest Shalour City Gym Leader, and continues to test her strengths in a series of trials like in The Cave of Trials!.

		Blaziken
		Blaziken is Gurkinn's first known Pokémon. It was used to guard a Lucarionite inside a cave. Korrina faced Blaziken in an attempt to obtain the Lucarionite so that she may be able to Mega Evolve her Lucario. Blaziken kept the upper hand during the fight with its powerful moves and type advantage, but with words of encouragement from Ash, Korrina and Lucario regained their resolve and immobilized Blaziken. Before Lucario could finish Blaziken off, Gurkinn intervened, revealing himself to be Blaziken's Trainer and the battle was only a test. Blaziken's known moves are Blaze Kick and Flamethrower.

		Lucario ↔ Mega Lucario
		Lucario is Gurkinn's second known Pokémon and is capable of Mega Evolving into Mega Lucario. It was first used to stop Korrina's Lucario from going on a rampage after losing control of its Mega Evolution. Later, it fought Korrina's Lucario in a battle with both in their Mega-Evolved states. Gurkinn's Lucario proved to be much stronger with its mastery over its Aura. When Korrina's Lucario went berserk again, Gurkinn had his Lucario knock out Korrina's, causing it to return to its normal state. Lucario appeared again in A Festival Reunion!. Goh mistook him for a wild Pokémon, after which Gurkinn interrupted him. Lucario's known moves are Bone Rush and Aura Sphere.

		Alakazam ↔ Mega Alakazam
		Alakazam is Gurkinn's third known Pokémon and was used in a battle against Ash before he could obtain the Lucarionite while Gurkinn was in disguise. Eventually Ash's Lucario was able to get the Lucarionite that Alakazam was holding hostage. Alakazam's known moves are Psychic, Psybeam, and Tri Attack.

Gurkinn in Pokémon Adventures

Gurkinn debuted in Trevenant Pokes. Years prior to the X & Y arc, he rescued X from a pair of intrusive reporters. He gave X a Mega Ring after seeing the bond the boy shared with his Kangaskhan. In addition to X, Gurkinn also gave Key Stones to 17 other people chosen to be Mega Evolution Successors, including Korrina, Diantha, Y, Blue, Steven Stone, Blaine, Peche, Ile, and Or.

Gurkinn was first seen at the Tower of Mastery, where he was attacked by Korrina, who angrily demanded to know why X received a Mega Ring without going through the proper succession ceremony. Before Gurkinn could answer, the tower was attacked by a Trevenant used by Essentia, a member of Team Flare. Gurkinn and Korrina fought the villain, only for Essentia to reveal she was distracting them while her Trevenant covered the tower in vines, trapping them inside. In order to prevent the secrets of Mega Evolution from falling into the wrong hands, Gurkinn and Korrina were forced to activate the Tower of Mastery's self-destruct mechanism, destroying the building and allowing them to escape.

In Connecting with Gardevoir, Korrina encountered Diantha, a former student of Gurkinn's. Diantha led Korrina to a nearby river where they found Gurkinn under attack by Chalmers, a Team Flare Admin. Once rescued, Gurkinn, Korrina, and Diantha used their Mega-Evolved Pokémon to defeat Chalmers. The three set off to keep the Legendary Pokémon Xerneas and Yveltal out of Team Flare's clutches.

In Tying Trevenant, Gurkinn, Korrina, and Diantha arrived at Route 9 to help X and his friends stop Team Flare from taking Xerneas's tree form. By Mega Evolving the Gengar he received as a gift from Gurkinn, X defeated Essentia and forced her to flee. Korrina fought Celosia and won, freeing the Vaniville townspeople Team Flare was using as forced labor in the process. Korrina was then knocked unconscious by Celosia's Honedge, allowing the scientist to take Xerneas to and steal her Key Stone.

In Quilladin Stands, Korrina was taken to a hospital in Laverre City to recover from her injuries. Meanwhile, Y, Shauna, and Tierno trained with Gurkinn in Pokémon battling. Noting Y's strength, Gurkinn wondered if he should pass his Key Stone down to her. In Pinsir Glares, Y was officially made a Mega Evolution Successor. She received a Mega Ring outfitted with the Key Stone from Gurkinn's Mega Glove.

In PS616, Steven revealed that in addition to his own, the three Key Stones he gave to Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, were given to him from Gurkinn. The Meteor Village Elder speculated that Gurkinn may be a descendant of a Draconid that moved to Kalos.

		Heracross ↔ Mega Heracross ♂
		Heracross is Gurkinn's first known Pokémon. He was used to battle against Essentia at the Tower of Mastery in his Mega-Evolved state. He teamed up with Korrina's Lucario to battle Essentia and later helped him activate the Tower of Mastery's self destruct switch to protect the secrets of Mega Evolution. Heracross's known moves are Pin Missile and Bullet Seed.

		Gengar ♂
		Gengar is Gurkinn's second known Pokémon. Due to his tendency to show off in battle, Gurkinn found him hard to work with. He was first used to stop Celosia's Aegislash from killing X. After explaining his hard-to-control personality, Gurkinn gave X the Gengar. Gengar was nicknamed Garma and bonded with X enough to be able to Mega Evolve into Mega Gengar. None of Gengar's moves under Gurkinn's ownership are known.

• All of Gurkinn's Pokémon in Pokémon Adventures and the anime are capable of Mega Evolution.
• Gurkinn is the only Trainer in the anime to have Mega Evolved more than one Pokémon, not counting the antagonists of Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel, whose form of Mega Evolution was an artificial one.
