Unlike [[Generation II]], all trees are not always able for encounter a wild Pokémon. For the "Headbutt-able" trees, a Pokémon will definitely always appear, even if [[Repel]] is being used (i.e. 100%). Likewise, no Pokémon will ever appear for a "Non Headbutt-able" (i.e. 100%).
The population of Pokémon differs from tree to tree. Each tree in the game is given a probability that a Pokemon will fall out of it when it is headbutted. A single tree's probability remains the same during your game, but may differ between each versions. These trees can be split into "Common" and "Rare" categories based on the probability a Pokemon will fall out of the tree. A "Common" tree will given a high chance of a Pokemon falling out, while a "Rare" tree will given a lower chance; however, higher level and encounter rate of specific Pokémon than usual.

Headbutt (Japanese: ずつき Headbutt) is a damage-dealing Template:Type2 move introduced in Generation I.
Effect
In battle
Headbutt does damage and has a 30% chance of causing the target to flinch.
Headbutt can't make a target with a Substitute flinch.
Outside of battle
In Generation II, Headbutt was introduced as a move which can be used out of battle, allowing the player to shake small trees, sometimes causing a wild Pokémon to drop out. Depending on the time of day, the Pokémon which falls out may be asleep. Some Pokémon can only be caught by this method (e.g Pineco, Heracross) as well as being found in trees in certain areas.
Prior to Generation III, Headbutt was no longer usable in the field.
In HeartGold and SoulSilver, as with Generation II, the ability to use Headbutt on trees in the field has returned. However, the only change is that Pokémon will not be sleeping when they are encountered, regardless of the time of day. After the National Pokédex is acquired, non-regional Pokémon from Hoenn or Sinnoh can also be found using this method.
Pokémon available
Generation II
In Generation II games, Pokémon are grouped by terrain, either Forest or Mountain.
Forest Pokémon
- Forest locations are: Azalea Town, Ilex Forest, National Park, Lake of Rage, Route 26, 27, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39

Generation IV
In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Pokémon are not grouped by terrain, and now appear in specific locations. Unlike Generation II, all trees are not always able for encounter a wild Pokémon. For the "Headbutt-able" trees, a Pokémon will definitely always appear, even if Repel is being used (i.e.
For example, a tree in Pewter City may house only Level 3-5 Hoothoot, while another tree in the same place may house Level 7-9 Hoothoot. As such, the tables will only reflect the lowest and highest possible level of that Pokémon found in the entire location.
This also explains why some Pokémon can only be found in a specific tree within that location (e.g. Starly in Pewter City or Taillow in Cherrygrove City). These trees are usually hidden, or only accessible via an HM like Surf or Rock Climb.
