Trivia

Kakuna's arms extended in artwork by Ken Sugimori.
  • In the Pokémon Red and Blue beta, "Kokoon" was the prototype English name for Kakuna. This is, of course, the same as the romanized Japanese name.
  • The "arms" on Kakuna seen in its Red and Blue sprite are commonly mistaken to be a sprite error, as they are rarely shown in any other media. They have so far only been shown on its Red and Blue sprite and a Pocket Monsters Bandai card.
  • Kakuna shares the same species name with Metapod, Silcoon, and Cascoon. They are all known as Cocoon Pokémon.
  • In the anime, Kakuna has been shown evolving more than any other Pokémon.
  • In Pokémon Platinum, Kakuna can learn Bug Bite by evolution from Weedle, or learn it through a Move Tutor in HeartGold and SoulSilver, despite not having a visible mouth.

Origin

Its design appears to be based on a chrysalis or the pupa stage of a bee.

Name origin

Its name is just a corruption of the word cocoon, and in the case of its Japanese name, it is the word itself.

In other languages

Language Name Name Origin
German Kokuna From Kokon.
French Coconfort From cocon, confort, and possibly fort.
Korean 딱충이 Ttakchungi
Chinese (Mandarin) 鐵殼昆 / 铁壳昆 Tiěkékūn From 鐵殼 tiěké and 昆蟲 kūnchóng. 殼昆 kékūn also sounds like cocoon.
Chinese (Cantonese) 鐵殼蛹 Tithokyúng Literally "Iron shell pupa".
