Dragonite (Japanese: カイリュー Kairyu) is a dual-type Dragon/Flying pseudo-legendary Pokémon.

It evolves from Dragonair starting at level 55. It is the final evolutionary form of Dratini.

Biology

Physiology

Despite being bulky, Dragonite are incredibly agile and fast. Unlike its pre-evolutions, they are orange and possess arms and legs. They resemble European dragons, and each one has a pair of little wings that can increase in size while flying. They have a taller stature than most humans.

Special abilities

Dragonite are very strong. They can cause a great deal of damage to most Pokémon. When they become particularly angry, they may begin to rampage, and will be unable to control their aggression for some time.

Behavior

Dragonite have a kindhearted disposition. They have been said to save people from drowning and lead ships that have been trapped in storms to safety. Dragonite are said to have an intelligence matching humans. They are extremely fast, able to circle around the globe in sixteen hours.

Dragonite are very rare in the wild, if found at all. People have claimed that there is an island somewhere that only Dragonite inhabit.

In the anime, Dragonite seemed to be an unknown Pokémon before Mystery at the Lighthouse, Bill is seen looking at the Pokémon and calling it unknown. That Dragonite was a giant Pokémon.

The first time that Dragonite actually made an appearance was during Mewtwo Strikes Back. The orange dragon delivered an invitation to Ash and co. to come to New Island.

A Dragonite belonging to Drake was used to battle Ash Ketchum in Hello Pummello and Enter the Dragonite.

Lance used his Dragonite to defeat the Red Gyarados in Rage of Innocence. Lance's Dragonite appeared again during The Scuffle of Legends.

A Dragonite that belonged to the original Gym Leader of the Blackthorn Gym appeared in Fangs For Nothing. This Dragonite went on a rampage when Team Rocket tried to steal a sacred bowl of fire in the following episode.

Professor Oak is revealed to own a very powerful Dragonite in The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon.

Porto's Dragonite appeared in DP118 as one of the participants of PokéRinger competition.

In the manga

In Pokémon Special, Lance, leader of the Elite Four, has a Dragonite.

Trivia

• Dragonite has the second highest base stat average of all non-legendary Pokémon, the first being Slaking. However, it is tied with the four other pseudo-legendary evolutions. Dragonite is also tied with many other legendaries for base stat average, including Mew, Celebi, Deoxys, Latios and Latias.
• In Red, Green, and Blue, Dragonite lacked the single horn on the top of his head. One was added in Yellow. Oddly in the Japanese Red and Green Dragonite had a ridge running down its neck and back.
• Of all the evolved Pokémon that evolve by level alone, Dragonite evolves to its final form later than any other Pokémon, at level 55. It shares this trait with Tyranitar.
• A Dragonite in Red, Blue, and Green has an illegal move, Barrier. This Dragonite belonged to Lance. Lance would later have another Pokémon with an illegal move: A Generation II Aerodactyl that knows Rock Slide (Aerodactyl could not learn Rock Slide legally until Generation III).
• Dragonite's name was first used in the 1995 game EarthBound, before Pokémon was released. Its name was used in an item called the Bag of Dragonite. Interestingly, a Dragonite later carried a messenger bag in the first movie.
• Dragonite is smaller than its pre-evolution.
• Given that the size of the Pokémon World is approximately the same as Earth, and Dragonite can make a complete cycle of the Earth in 16 hours, Dragonite's top flying speed is roughly 1556mph.

Origin

Dragonite resembles a European dragon or fairy dragon; its description as the "guardian of the sea" may also suggest it has elements similar to Chinese dragon.

Name origin

Dragonite's name appears to be a combination of dragon and knight, "ignite," or night. It could also refer to draconite, a mythical stone of dragons. Its Japanese name is a combination of 海 kai, ocean, or 破壊 hakai, destruction, and 竜 ryū, dragon.
