Trivia

  • Venonat's antennaes change shape between its Generation I and Generation II sprites, gaining volume at the end of each stalk. They returned to their Generation I design in Generation III, and have remained that way since.
  • This Pokémon's face bears resemblance to the face of Butterfree.

Origin

Venonat is most likely based on a gnat.

Name origin

Venonat's name is likely a combination of venom and gnat, a small insect. Its Japanese name is possibly a combination of こんちゅう konchū, meaning insect, and the word pang, which is the sound that a radar makes, referring to its radar-like eyes. It could also be a shortening of コンパウンド アイ, compound eye, both referring to its eyes and its ability.
