Girafarig (Japanese: キリンリキ Kirinriki) is a dual-type Normal/Psychic Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

It is notable for being one of only two Normal dual-type Pokémon that is not part Flying-type, the other being Bibarel.

Contents

Biology

Physiology

Girafarig are Pokémon that possess several unusual features. Their front halves are yellow with black spots while their back halves are black with yellow spots. In the front they have a long neck used for browsing (though not quite as long as their real-world counterparts), with pink spikes running down the back. The most unusual feature is its tail end, which possesses a head of its own. However, this head is incapable of independent thinking but relies on outside stimuli such as smell to guide its actions. The tail often mimics the head during feeding and is able to warn the Pokémon of danger if it is sleeping.

Gender differences

The darker section of a female Girafarig is smaller than a male's, and only contains one yellow spot.

Special abilities

Due to mysteriously being a part Normal-type, it is immune to Ghost-type attacks, which would be a threat to its Psychic typing. This typing also negates Normal's weakness to Fighting, leaving it weak to the moves of only two types: The Dark-type and the Bug-type.

Behavior

Habitat

Girafarig live in wide-open plains and at the bottom of mountains.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

A Girafarig is an herbivore, it eats grass, leaves, and tree shoots.

Trivia

  • The original design of Girafarig had a full-sized second head, reflecting its palindromic name, and rather resembling a pushmi-pullyu.
  • Girafarig's name in English is a palindrome, as are Eevee and Ho-Oh. Kirinriki, Girafarig's Japanese name, is also a palindrome in its original katakana writing, but not if it's written in English letters.
  • In Pokémon Battle Revolution Girafarig's tail does not make a biting motion, unlike in the previous 3D installments.
  • In its Gold and Silver shiny sprite, the whole of its back was blue, but in the games after it, only the spikes on its back and its nose are blue.
  • Since its debut in Generation II, Girafarig has been featured in all regional Pokédexes.
  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Girafarig.
  • Girafarig's second head bears a resemblance to a Chain Chomp from the Super Mario Bros. series.
    • The second head of Girafarig also acts like one.
  • With the second head resting on a pole like tail, it bears a resemblance to a toy stick horse.
  • Girafarig's back spikes and nose were white in Generation II sprites, but are pink in later games.

Origin

As its name states, Girafarig is based off of a giraffe.

Name origin

Girafarig is based firstly on a giraffe and its name is a palindrome like its Japanese name, Kirinriki.

In modern Japanese, 麒麟 kirin simply means giraffe, but it is also the Japanese name of Qílín, the Chinese unicorn. The Qilin was feared by criminals as it was able to detect guilt. After sensing the guilt, the Qilin would stare at the guilty party and pierce its heart.
