Trivia

  • Prinplup can learn Metal Claw, despite not having any visible claws.

Origin

Prinplup is seemingly based on a macaroni penguin.

Name origin

Its Japanese name is a combination of the words ぽちゃぽちゃ pochapocha, meaning both to splash in water and to have a plump appearance, and 皇太子 kōtaishi, crown prince - in reference to its evolution into an emperor penguin of sorts. Its English name uses the same pun, "prince" and "plup", the sound of hitting the water

In other languages

  • German: Pliprin - From "plip", the sound of something small hitting a water surface, and "Prinz" (price).
  • French: Prinplouf
  • Korean: 팽태자 Pengtaeja
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 波皇子 Bō Wáng Zǐ - From its Japanese name. Literally "Wave prince".
