Trivia
- Spinarak was colored dark purple in its in-game sprites for Pokémon Gold and Silver possibly to give an effect of it only appearing at nighttime. Its color was changed to green in Pokémon Crystal to suit its official artwork.
- Spinarak's shiny form in Generation II shows it being light purple. The color was changed to blue in Generation III.
- Like its evolved form, Spinarak's sprites are the same in both the Gold and Silver versions.
- In Spinarak's front sprites, the pattern on it's back is frowning. In its back sprites, the pattern is smiling.
- Spinarak is (and always has been) the only Pokémon to learn SonicBoom through breeding.
Origin
In particular, Spinarak shares coloring and appearance with the Happy Face Spider, an arachnid from Hawaii that seems to have a face on its abdomen.
Japanese believe that a spider can ensnare careless travelers.
Name origin
Spinarak's name is a combination of spinneret, which is where a spider excretes silk, and arachnid. Itomaru could be a combination of 糸 ito, thread, and 丸 maru, circle, or a shortening of 巻き上がる makiagaru, to roll up.
In other languages
- German: Webarak - Comes from web and arachnid.
- French: Mimigal - Comes from mignon, meaning cute, and mygale, referring to mygalomorphae.
- Korean: 페이검 Peigeom
