Scyther (Japanese: ストライク Strike) is a dual-type Bug/Flying Pokémon.

It evolves into Scizor when traded holding a Metal Coat.

Contents

Biology

Physiology

Scyther resembles a green, human-sized praying mantis. Its feet have three toes each. Scyther has large, blade-like forearms. It has a pair of cream-colored wings. Its head resembles the head of a reptile as opposed to an insect's head.

Gender differences

A female has a bigger abdomen.

Special abilities

Scyther's blade-like forearms have the power to slice through logs with a single blow. Scyther is also gifted with tremendous speed and can fly on very rare occasions. It is said it could use its scythes like a ninja.

Unlike most unevolved Pokémon, Scyther can learn Hyper Beam and Giga Impact. This is likely because it is already a large Pokémon, and was at one time the final (and only) stage in its evolutionary line.

Behavior

Scythers tend to act like lions, and if a challenger Scyther wins the the leader of the Scyther swarm, the original Scyther leader will part away, and the new challenger will take place as the new leader.

Habitat

Scyther are often rare Pokémon, appearing only in secluded forests. Some have been imported to Kanto to live in its Safari Zone.

In the anime

Major Appearances

Tracey's Scyther

Tracey captured an elderly Scyther in Tracey Gets Bugged. Even in its old age it is very aggressive, but for the same reasons, Tracey tries not to use it.

Other

Scyther first appeared in Showdown at Dark City. It was one of the Pokémon used during the feuds between the Kas and Yas Gyms of Dark Town. It is the Yas Gym's primary Pokémon.

A Scyther has also been used by the Gym Leader of Navel Island, Danny. It was seen helping Danny's Machoke and Nidoqueen carve Danny's sled and later competed in the sled race alongside Danny's Electrode and Geodude.

Bugsy used a Scyther against Ash in Gettin' The Bugs Out. This Scyther was trained to block fire-type attacks by using Swords Dance as a fan. Ash discovered that this defensive strategy doesn't work if a fire-type move is used from above, which allowed his Cyndaquil to win in his Gym match.

Minor Appearances

In Mewtwo Strikes Back, a Scyther owned by Corey was one of the Pokémon that was captured and cloned by Mewtwo. When Team Rocket saw this Pokémon being cloned, it was mistaken for an Alakazam. The Scyther clone was seen again in Mewtwo Returns.

A Scyther appeared during the Indigo League in The Fourth Round Rumble, under the ownership of Jeanette Fisher. Ash's Bulbasaur battled the Scyther, and despite the type disadvantage, Bulbasaur came out the winner.

A Scyther also appeared in Tricks of the Trade.

A Pokémon Hunter had a Scyther and Houndoom which he had used to chase after Celebi in Celebi: Voice of the Forest.

Scyther was used by one of the students of the Pokémon Trainer's School in Gonna Rule The School!.

Luna from Curbing the Crimson Tide had a Scyther that eventually evolved into a Scizor.

Scyther appeared in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness as a member of Team Razor Wind.

A Scyther was under the ownership of a girl in Tag, We're It! and was partnered with a man's Koffing against Dawn's Piplup and Conway's Slowking.

Game data

NPC appearances

  • Pokémon Snap: A Scyther appears at two points on the Beach level. At the first point, the use of a pester ball will chase it out. (This also triggers a special Multiple Pikachu Photo opportunity.) The second point is close to the end of the Beach level.
  • Pokémon Stadium 2: Scyther stars in a mini-game alongside Pinsir called "Clear Cut Challenge." Each player chops a falling log for each round of the game. The score for each player is determined by how close the player is to the white line on the log. Cutting anywhere above the log will cause the player to lose points.
  • Pokémon Ranger: Garret uses two Scyther to back up his Scizor.
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2: Scyther is one of the members of Team Razor Wind.

Trivia

  • Scyther's prototype name was "Stryke," a corruption of the word "strike."
  • Of the first generation Bug Pokémon, Scyther ties with Venomoth for highest HP, ties with Butterfree, Beedrill and Parasect for highest Special Defense and has the highest Speed.
  • Despite having different base stats, Scyther and its evolution, Scizor, have the same base stat total: 500.
  • Scyther, according to the anime episode Showdown in Dark City, hates the color red, while its evolved form is completely red.

Origin

It draws much inspiration from a praying mantis. However, its face is more similar to dinosaurs, dragons, or various reptiles.

Name origin

Scyther's name is a reference to the scythe-like blades on its forearms. Its Japanese name may just be a reference to its deadly bladed strikes.

In other languages

  • German: Sichlor - From sichel (sickle or scythe).
  • French: Insecateur - From insecte (insect) and secateur (shears or clippers).
  • Korean: 스라크 Seurakeu
