Trophy information

This Aqua Mouse Pokémon evolves into Azumarill. The round ball on the end of its tail acts like a flotation device, so it can float safely on the roughest of water conditions. It resides on Mt. Mortar in seclusion; few of the creatures are ever seen. Marill's cuteness has earned it a large and loyal fan base.

Stadium 2 The tip of its tail, which contains oil that is lighter than water, lets it swim without drowning.

Trivia

  • For months prior to to the release of Pokémon Gold and Silver, Marill was often incorrectly referred to as "Pikablu", likely because of its slight resemblance to Pikachu.
  • In its original design, Marill was pink.
  • Marill was the third Generation II Pokémon to appear before the Johto series (after Ho-Oh and Togepi).
  • Marill is the only Pokémon that evolves from a pure Normal-type Pokémon but isn't a Normal-type itself, other than the Eeveelutions.

Origin

It may be based upon a combination of a mouse and a beach ball. Its body and ears also resemble a water molecule.

Name origin

Marill's name may be a combination of marine, of the water, and rill, a small river or brook. The name may also come from a contraction of the phrase marine blue. In Japanese, the romanization of Marill is Mariru. It's possible that the name could have derived from the Japanese 丸い marui, round or circular, or 鞠 mari, ball and 瑠璃 ruri, lapis lazuli.
