Trivia
- For months prior to to the release of Pokémon Gold and Silver, Marill was often incorrectly referred to as "Pikablu", likely because of its slight resemblance to Pikachu.
- Marill's name was originally intended to be spelled Marril, as shown in some merchandise for the first movie.
- In its original design, Marill was pink.
- Marill was the third Generation II Pokémon to appear before the Johto series (after Ho-Oh and Togepi).
- Marill is the only Pokémon that evolves from a pure Normal-type Pokémon but isn't a Normal-type itself, other than the Eeveelutions.
- Marill is similar to Pikachu in several ways.
- They both were released prior to their generation.
- They both have an evolution introduced in the same generation as themselves and a pre-evolution introduced in the next generation.
- Coincidently, both Marill and its pre-evolution were introduced before their respective generation.
Origin
It may be based upon a combination of a mouse and a beach ball. Its body and ears also resemble a water molecule.
Name origin
Marill's name may be a combination of marine, of the water, and rill, a small river or brook. The name may also come from a contraction of the phrase marine blue. In Japanese, it's possible that the name could have derived from 丸い marui, round or circular, or 鞠 mari, ball, and 瑠璃 ruri, lapis lazuli.
