Rapidash (Japanese: ギャロップ Gallop) is a Fire-type Pokémon.

It evolves from Ponyta starting at level 40.

Contents

Biology

Physiology

Rapidash is a horse-like, quadruped Pokémon. It has a horn, reminiscent of a unicorn. Rapidash has eyes with red irises that are proportionally smaller and different in design to its pre-evolution, Ponyta. Like its pre-evolution, Rapidash has various flames streaming from certain spots on its body. However, Rapidash’s flames are different in shape and location on the body to Ponyta’s, for the flames at the tops of the legs have vanished and there are now flames on the ankles. Rapidash’s 'tail'-flame now streams from its back, and Rapidash’s head flame is much longer.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

They run at about 150 miles per hour, chasing everything that moves in hopes of racing it. With incredible acceleration, they reach their top speed in only ten steps. At full gallop, their four hooves barely touch the ground.

Behavior

Rapidash are very agile Pokémon. They can live on mountains along with Rock and other Fire Pokémon. It is possible that they live alone, rather than in groups of fellow Rapidash. They are the highest evolved form of Ponyta and are highly capable in battle. Although Rapidash only casually canter, they are very competitive Pokémon. They will chase anything that moves in hopes of racing it. The faster Rapidash go, the longer the swaying flames of their mane will become. At an all-out gallop, their blazing mane sparkles, a feature which is said to enhance their beautiful appearance.

Habitat

Most Rapidash live on grassland such as fields and plains, but they can also be seen on mountains. The best place to find wild ones would be in Kanto, though some can be found in Johto and Unova as well.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

They mostly grazes on grass, but they can sometimes be found with the Shuca Berry.

Major appearances

Ash used a Ponyta belonging to Lara Laramie in the Pokémon Marathon in The Flame Pokémon-athon. The Ponyta evolved into Rapidash near the end of the race, winning it.

Jon Dickson used a Rapidash in the final match of the Silver Conference in Johto Photo Finish.

Minor appearances

In Mewtwo Strikes Back, a Rapidash owned by Neesha was also one of the Pokémon that were captured and cloned by Mewtwo. The Rapidash clone is seen again in Mewtwo Returns.

Stella had a Rapidash in her circus in It's Mr. Mime Time.

A Rapidash appeared in Love at First Flight in Jessie's dream of Prince Charming.

It also appeared in Stategy Begins at Home! in Ash's flashback.

Rapidash made a cameo appearance in Last Call, First Round! with a Girafarig.

A Rapidash appeared in the opening scenes of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

Other

A Rapidash was featured in the original opening theme, Aim to Be a Pokémon Master and Pokémon Theme.

Rapidash was the focus of Professor Oak's lecture and Pokémon senryū in EP072.

In the manga

Pokémon Adventures

Blaine is seen with a Rapidash as his steed in Pokémon Adventures. In the Red, Green & Blue chapter, it carried Red to Blaine's secret laboratory to revive an Aerodactyl from its fossil. Later, Blaine rides Rapidash into Mewtwo's Psywave in an attempt to defeat Mewtwo. To protect Red, Blaine's Rapidash creates a fireball wall around the Trainer to shield him from the impending blast.

It also appeared in the Emerald saga when Crystal lent the Rapidash she had to Emerald. Though it was initially defeated by Lucy's Seviper with its Toxic and Giga Drain maneuver, its fellow team member Blissey revitalized it using Heal Bell and Softboiled, allowing it to defeat the serpent with a powerful Overheat.

In the Diamond & Pearl chapter, Platinum's Ponyta evolved into a Rapidash the day after her Gym battle against Byron.

Trivia

Flameless Rapidash

Origin

Rapidash's horn shows it may have been inspired by unicorns, but it doesn't seem to have anything else in common with unicorns, being more like a regular horse. It would also seem that Rapidash, along with its pre-evolution, are based on the Greek god Helios's fiery steeds.

Name origin

Rapidash's name could be a combination of rapid and dash, referring to the high speed at which it runs. It could also be a combination of rapid and ash, referring to the fact that Rapidash has flames on its back. Its Japanese name is simply the word gallop, which is the form of running of hooved animals.

In other languages

Language Name Name Origin
German Gallopa Derived from galloppieren.
