Trivia

  • Cleffa shares the same species name with Staryu. They are both known as Star Shape Pokémon.
  • Magical Leaf is the only attack that is not of the Normal-type that Cleffa learns via level up.
  • Cleffa is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 218.
  • Cleffa has the shortest Japanese name.

Origin

It is possible that it's based on fairies and pixies, just like its evolutions.

Name origin

Cleffa's name is a contraction of the name Clefairy, to indicate it is a pre-evolution. Clef is French for keys (ie. musical ones). Its Japanese name is also a contraction of the name Pippi.

In other languages

Language Name Name Origin
German Pii Shorter form of its evolution's name "Piepi".
French Melo A contraction of the word melody.
Korean Ppi
Chinese (Taiwan) 皮寶寶 Pí Băo Băo The first character is a transliteration of its Japanese name. 寶寶 means darling or baby.
