Gardevoir (Japanese: サーナイト Sirknight) is a Psychic-type Pokémon.

It evolves from Kirlia starting at level 30. It is one of Ralts's final forms.

Contents

Biology

Physiology

The mini-skirt that Gardevoir had as a Kirlia is now an elegant ballroom gown with a green underside. Its ‘hair’ style has also changed, with ‘curls’ down the sides of its head. Gardevoir has long, slender, white legs underneath the gown. Gardevoir's arms are now green and the red fin-like horns it had on its head before evolving have now moved to its chest and its back. Gardevoir also has spikes to the side of its face, and a band of green extending on its chest to the centermost fin.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Gardevoir can sense the feelings of people and other Pokémon. It can also see the future clearly. Gardevoir also has the psychokinetic power to distort the dimensions and create a small black hole, in order to protect its Trainer. Apparently, Gardevoir does not feel the pull of gravity because it supports itself with psychic power.

Behavior

Gardevoir are known widely for their loyalty to their trainers, even to the point of sacrificing their own life for them. In the wild they go in family groups, caring heavily for their young.

Major appearances

Gardevoir's debut appearance was in Do I Hear a Ralts?. It was the parent of the sick Ralts that Max and Ash's Snorunt were taking to the Pokémon Center.

Its most recent appearance was in Mutiny in the Bounty. It belonged to a girl named Melodi and then was stolen by Pokémon Hunter J. It proved to have a deep psychic connection with its trainer and was able to hear her through thought.

Spoiler warning: this article may contain major plot or ending details.
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team: Gardevoir is the spirit of a Pokémon who sacrificed herself for her trainer. She comes to the player in their dreams, explaining things and generally appearing after important periods in the game. She is revived later in the game, but doesn't remember anything about her previous life.
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness: Medicham is a member of Team Charm. She knows Wigglytuff from long ago. Together, they and the player's team explore Aegis Cave and defeat Regigigas.
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky: Team Charm debut in their own special episode, Lopunny being the playable character. She is shown to be the calm, smart member of the group, rarely getting mad and pondering situations. The team hears about the treasure filled Southern Jungle. They are advised to stay away by a Bellossom but the team continued on. They find a passed out Wigglytuff, who fainted due to hunger and give him a Perfect Apple, revitalizing him. They encounter Team AWD, who believe the team is pathetic. Before they enter, a Sentret pleads Charm to stop AWD, saying they were cruel to it. The team arrives at the dungeon's end, which holds an empty chest. AWD accuses Charm of taking the treasure and they fight. Wigglytuff appears to stop the brawl, and reveals that the chest is a Ditto. The Bellossom and Sentret earlier were also him. He reveals he is there to guard a Time Gear and the teams leave. They later bribe Wigglytuff with a Perfect Apple to join their team.

Trivia

  • Out of the three original stages of Ralts, Gardevoir is the only one that had its name changed in the English version.
  • Despite its human-like appearance, it isn't in the Humanshape egg group.
  • In My Pokémon Ranch, Gardevoir displays the ability of levitation/flight. With the Trace ability, this is possible by copying Levitate.
  • Gardevoir's number in the Sinnoh Pokédex (Platinum only) and the Almia Browser is the same: 159. This makes it and its evolution family one of only five families of Pokémon (comprising thirteen Pokémon altogether) to have the same numbers in more than one Pokédex-like listing.

Origin

Gardevoir resembles a ballroom dancer. Its exaggerated head with minimal facial expression and an overall frail, featureless physique could also be attributed to anesama ningyou, a style of traditional Japanese paper doll. Considering its protective nature to its trainer, it could also be based on a guardian angel.

Name origin

Gardevoir's name may be a combination of garde (French for "guard") and devoir (French for "duty"). This is reflected on its Pokédex data, which explains how Gardevoir will protect its Trainer even at the cost of its own life. Its Japanese name may be taken to mean さあ、ナイト saa, naito ("come, knight") or 'Sir Knight'.
