It evolves into Marill via happiness, who evolves into Azumarill starting at level 18.

Biology
Physiology
Azurill's ball tail appears to be the biggest of its evolution family, this is due to Azurill's body itself being small. It is large and bouncy and packed full of the nutrients this Pokémon needs to grow. Azurill can be seen bouncing and playing on its big, rubbery tail. The tail is a flotation device in water. It is the only one of its evolutions with white to the side of its cheeks and not under its chest.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Azurill spins its tail as if it were a lasso, then hurls it far. The momentum of the throw sends its body flying, too. Using this unique action, one of these Pokémon managed to hurl itself a record 33 feet.
Behavior
On sunny days they gather at the edge of water and splash about for fun. Azurill will spin its tail as if it were a lasso, then hurl it far. The momentum of the throw sends its body flying, too.

Trivia
- Azurill is, by statistical average, the second-weakest Pokémon in the games, stronger only than Sunkern.
- Azurill and Wynaut are the first two Pokémon which are only breedable from their evolved forms if the parent is holding a certain incense.
- They are also, coincidentally, the only Generation III Pokémon related to Pokémon of a previous generation.
- Azurill is the only Pokémon whose type changes completely upon evolution, excluding Eevee.
- Azurill is also the first and currently only Pokémon whose gender ratio (75% ♀ / 25% ♂) is different than that of its evolved forms (50% ♀ / 50% ♂). This causes 1 in 3 female Azurill to evolve into male Marill. It is unknown if this is a programming error, or a reference to real-world animals that can in fact change gender.
- Azurill is the lightest and shortest non-Water-type Pokémon to learn Surf.
- Azurill, along with Wailmer and Kecleon, was one of the first Generation III Pokémon revealed, in early March of 2001.
- Azurill's Platinum sprite is the only sprite that shows Azurill not sitting on its tail.
- Azurill has the lowest base stat total of all baby Pokémon.
- Azurill is the only Pokémon which evolves through happiness whose evolution evolves by level.
Origin
It appears to be a mouse combined with a beach ball.
Name origin
Azurill's name is a combination of azure, referring to its color, and rill. Its Japanese name seems to be a corruption of 瑠璃 ruri, lapis lazuli, which is probably in its evolution's, Marill's, name.
