May (Japanese: ハルカ Haruka) is the female choice for the player character in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald and their Generation VI remakes Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. She also serves as the rival in the same games if the player chooses to play as the male character. Her male counterpart is Brendan.

The Generation III games deviated from the tradition of naming characters as their respective game names, such as Red in the Generation I and Generation II games. As such, May's counterparts include May from the anime and Sapphire in the Pokémon Adventures manga.

In the games

Role

If May is selected as the player character she starts her journey moving from her home in Johto to her new home in the town of Littleroot in Hoenn. After saving Prof. Birch from a wild Pokémon, she is given one of the three starters of the Hoenn region. May develops a close bond with Brendan, and eventually Wally, who both act as her rivals. May goes on to gather the eight Badges of Hoenn, stop the plans of Team AquaSEAS/Team MagmaREOR and conquer the Pokémon League all before going off to face the Battle Frontier.

If May is not selected as the player, she is helping her dad finish the Hoenn Pokédex and becoming a Pokémon Professor. She is also the player's rival and friend. Unlike other rivals (except for Brendan when playing as May), she gives up being a Trainer, making them the only rivals unavailable for battle after defeating the Elite Four.

Quotes

Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire

Littleroot Town
"Pokémon fully restored! Items ready, and... Huh? Huh? Who... who are you?... Oh, you're <player>. So your move was today. Um... I'm May. Glad to meet you! I... I have this dream of becoming friends with Pokémon all over the world. I... I heard about you, <player>, from my dad, Prof. Birch. I was hoping you would be nice, <player>, and that we could be friends. Oh, this is silly, isn't it? I...I've just met you, <player>. Eheheh... Oh, no! I forgot! I was supposed to help Dad catch some wild Pokémon! <player>, I'll catch you later! "
Oldale Town
"<player>! Over here! Let's hurry home!"
Route 103
"Let’s see... The Pokémon found on Route 103 include... Oh, hi, <player>! ...Oh, I see, my dad gave you a Pokémon as a gift. Since we’re here, let’s have a quick battle! I’ll give you a taste of what being a trainer is like."
  • When defeated
"Wow! That’s great! <player>, you’re pretty good!"
  • After being defeated
"I think I know why my dad has an eye out for you now. I mean, you just got that Pokemon but it already likes you. You might be able to befriend any kind of Pokémon easily. Well, it’s time to head back to the Lab."
Professor Birch’s Lab
"Oh, wow, <player>! You got a Pokédex, too! That’s great! Just like me! I’ve got something for you, too!"
"It’s fun if you can get a lot of Pokémon! I’m going to look all over the place because I want different Pokémon. If I find any cute Pokémon, I’ll catch them with Poké Balls!"
  • If talked to once again
"I wonder where I should go look for Pokémon next?"
Rustboro City
"Oh, hi, <player>! How's your Pokédex coming along? Mine's looking pretty decent. I caught Pokémon in Petalburg Woods until I ran out of Poké Balls."
"Oh, by the way, I passed Mr. Briney in Petalburg Woods. I guess he's on his way home to his cottage by the sea. <player>, you just moved here so you might not know this, but Mr. Briney was once a revered seafarer."
Route 110
"Hi, <player>, long time no see! While I was searching for other Pokémon, my Pokémon grew stronger. So... How about a little battle?"
  • When defeated
"Yikes! You're better than I expected!"
  • After being defeated
"<player>, you've been busy training, too, haven't you? I think you deserve a reward! This is from me!"
"That's an Itemfinder. Try it out. If there's an item that's not visible, it emits a sound. Okay, <player>, let's meet again! I know it's a little silly coming from me, but I think you should train a lot harder for the next time."
Lavaridge Town
"<player>! Long time no see! Oh? While I was visiting the hot springs, you got the Lavaridge Gym Badge. You must have caught some good Pokémon... No, I guess you raised some. I guess it would be okay for you to have this."
"With those Go-Goggles, you'll have no trouble getting through the desert near Route 111. But, wow, <player>... Challenging Gyms... You're trying hard because you don't want to lose to me, I bet! <player>, I think I should challenge your dad in Petalburg Gym. <player>, see you again!"
Route 119
"<player>! Where were you? I was looking for you! How much stronger have you gotten? Let me check for you! Ready with your Pokémon? Of course you are! Go!"
  • When defeated
"Achah! <player>, you're strong! I was worried that you might be struggling with your training."
  • After being defeated
"But I had absolutely nothing to be worried about! Keep it up! And, here! I have a present for you."
"Use Fly and your Pokémon will instantly carry you to any town you've already visited. But to use Fly you have to get the Gym Badge from Fortree City. That's important, so don't forget. You should Fly home and visit Littleroot for a change. I bet your mom's worried about you, <player>. Well, let's meet again somewhere!"
Lilycove City
"Oh, hey, <player>, are you shopping, too? I bought a whole bunch of Dolls and Posters. Of course, I've also caught a lot of Pokémon, and I'm raising them properly, too. Actually, I'm more worried if you're raising Pokémon properly, <player>. I'll battle with you, so you can show me your Pokémon, <player>."
Yes: "The Pokémon I raised won't be beaten by your Pokémon, <player>!"
No: Oh, why? <player>, haven't you been raising your Pokémon? That's not a very good showing as a Trainer."
  • When defeated
"... ... ... ... ...I remember the battle I had with you, <player>, on Route 103. That battle helped you become this strong, <player>, didn't it?"
  • After being defeated
"I'm thinking of going back to Littleroot soon. I've caught a decent group of Pokémon, and my Pokédex is coming along, so I'm going home to show my dad. <player>, what are you going to do? Collect all the Gym Badges and take the Pokémon League challenge? Well, while you're collecting badges, <player>, I'm going to work on my Pokédex. I'll complete it before you! See you!"

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire Special Demo Version

First adventure - Mirage Cave (by Fallarbor Town)
"You jerks! You think two-on-one is a fair battle?! And you call yourselves adults, too! Never mind your weird outfits and those stripes!"
"Wah! Orlando?! Why are you here?"
  • After the player defeats the two Team Aqua or Team Magma grunts inside the cave
"Thanks for helping out, Orlando! Oh? Your Pokémon's looking a bit tired there. Lemme heal it right up for you!"
"There! Ready for action! My dad asked me to come to this island to survey some Pokémon that supposedly lives here. But with all these weirdos decked out in red and blue trying to go after the local Pokémon, I couldn't just stand back and watch, you know? But there's a couple of guys ahead who seem way stronger than the two we just faced... I'd guess they're the bosses or something... I tried to fight them, but me and my team didn't stand a chance... But you and your Pokémon, Orlando... You might be able to win where I couldn't. Don't push it too hard, though. Cross your heart, OK?"
Secret Team Aqua/Magma adventure - Mirage Cave (by Route 124)
"Hey! Orlando! I can't believe I ran into you again! We keep meeting like this whenever I come to check something out. I'll help you with searching out the bad guys, since I'm here."
  • If spoken to again outside
"I'll help find those bad guys, too!"
  • When the player approaches the Team Aqua/Magma Grunts on the east inside the cave
"Aha! Found you! There are the bad guys!" (The Grunts challenge Orlando and May to a battle.) "What?! Come on, Orlando! Let's take 'em on together!"
  • After defeating the Grunts
"Just like I thought. Orlando, you're great with Pokémon! There are still more baddies ahead, it looks like. We'd better take care of them!"
  • When the player approaches the next pair of Grunts
"Are we famous or something?!" (The Grunts challenge the player and May.) "I'm battling together with Orlando! There's no way I'm gonna lose!"
  • After defeating the second pair of Grunts
"Hey, Orlando! Up ahead there! Looks like there's an exit!"
  • When the player approaches the exit
"Your Pokémon really are strong, Orlando. I had a head start on you as a Trainer, but you... You're just too good for me... Just kidding!"
"Looks like we can get out here. But I wonder if there are more bad guys..."
  • When the player approaches the team's admin
"So you're here after all! You're that giant/tubby Team Aqua/Magma guy from last time!"
(Matt greets the player.)
"You're up to something bad again, aren't you? We're not letting you get away with it!"
  • After defeating the Grunt and Admin, when the Grunt says she'll put May and Orlando's names in their notebook
"Go right ahead! I don't care a bit! Thanks for battling with me, Orlando. I try to act tough, but honestly if you hadn't been here, I couldn't have beaten those two."
"All right! Let's head back to Steven!"
  • After returning to Steven
"Orlando, I'm going to stay here a bit longer and survey the Pokémon that live here. I ought to send a report to my dad—um, I mean, to Professor Birch. But let's meet again somewhere! See you!"

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

Littleroot Town
  • First encounter:
"Pokémon fully restored, items all ready and... Huh?! Who...are you? ... Oh! You must be <player>! Your move was today, huh? Well, I'm May! Glad to meet you! I...I actually have this dream of becoming friends with Pokémon all over the world. And then when Dad—oh, I mean Professor Birch— told me about you moving here, <player>... Well, I was hoping you would be nice and we could be friends. ...B-but that's just silly, isn't it? I've just met you. Right, <player>? So what am I talking about... Hee hee... Oh no! I forgot! I was supposed to be going out to help Dad catch some wild Pokémon! <player>, I'll see you later!"
  • Delta Episode:
"Ughhh... Owwww... Oh, wibble... It’s not that big of a deal, Mom. She just knocked me down a bit... Yowch! That stings! Oh! <player>! You’re all right, huh? ...That’s a relief. It all happened so fast that I couldn’t do a thing, but... Some strange woman came in my window, upstairs... And then she... She took my Key Stone from me... I tried to fight her off with my team, but... She was really strong... I didn’t stand a chance... I think I heard her muttering under her breath as she left, though... Something like “Petalburg’s next...” ...be careful. I’m really happy you came to visit me, but... I’m sorry... I think I’ll have to sit this one out."
  • Post-Delta Episode:
"I wonder where I should go next to catch more Pokémon… Hopefully somewhere that I might run into you again, <player>!"
Route 103
"Let's see... On Route 103, I found this Pokémon...and this one...and this one, too... Oh! Hey, <player>! What's that? Oh! My dad gave you a Pokémon as a gift, huh? Well then, why don't we go ahead and have a quick battle? I'll give you a taste of what being a Trainer is really like!"
  • If the player wins
"Wow! That's great! <player>, you're pretty good!"
  • After the player wins
"It was a good battle. Thanks! Let me heal up both our parties real quick. Wow... I think I know why my dad has his eye on you now. I mean, you just got that Pokémon, and you've already got that strong of a bond. I bet you could probably befriend any kind of Pokémon you meet! Phew... I guess I'd better head back to the lab!"
Oldale Town
"<player>! Over here! Let's hurry back to Littleroot!"
Professor Birch’s Lab
"Oh! <player>! Over here!"
"Oh, wow, <player>! Now you've got a Pokédex, too! That's great. Just like me! Then here... I'll give you something, too! Some Poké Balls that you can use to catch wild Pokémon! If you catch a Pokémon in the wild and battle together with it for a while, it will grow stronger for you! Take that as a bit of advice from a more experienced Trainer like me! I'm going to get ready to head out from Littleroot soon myself. I can't wait to see what kind of Pokémon I'm going to meet... Let's both do our best on our journeys, <player>!"
  • If talked to once again
"I wonder where I should go to look for Pokémon next?"
Route 101
"<player>! This is from my dad. He said he forgot to give it to you before. The app I just added to your PokéNav Plus is called the DexNav. It can tell you lots about the Pokémon living in each area and that kind of stuff. It's a handy app to have if you're trying to catch lots of different Pokémon. All right! Guess it's about time I use the DexNav to do some more Pokémon catching myself! <player>, you should use those Poké Balls I gave you earlier to do a bit of catching, too!"
"<player>! Over here! See that? Right there? There's a tail sticking out! There's a Pokémon hiding there! And look here, if you check your DexNav... All right! It looks like that Pokémon knows a pretty rare move, too! <player>! Try getting closer, real nice and slow! Push lightly on the Circle Pad to sneak close to Pokémon hiding in the grass. That's what it said in a book I read! You're almost there...! Slowly...slooowly... Remember...you press lightly on the Circle Pad to sneak!"
  • After a successful sneak
"That was amazing, <player>! I've been at this way longer that you, and even I have a hard time sneaking up like that without being noticed!"
  • After a unsuccessful sneak
"Oooh, too bad! If you try to get close in a rush, a hiding Pokémon will just run away from you."
Route 102
"Heeeeeey! How's it going, <player>? Have you been using your DexNav and perfecting your sneaking skills? I hope you already checked out the DexNav's Detector Mode. It reacts to Pokémon in the area, so it's really handy! Ah! Look! Up there! Check 'em out, <player>! Those were...Beautifly, weren't they? I'll have to check in my DexNav later to be sure! But, wow, we already made it through Route 102, huh? I guess it's really true that time flies when you're with a friend! Oh, l-look! There's Petalburg already! <player>, your dad... He's the Gym Leader in Petalburg City, isn't he? Maybe I should try to take him on myself, once I train my Pokémon a bit more! Guess I'm off then, <player>! Let's meet up again sometime!"
Rustboro City
"So you made it here to Rustboro, too, <player>!"
"It's really big here, isn't it? Littleroot can't even compare."
"Oh, and <player>, have you heard? There's a Pokémon Gym here, too!"
"Once I catch a couple more Pokémon, I'll be sure to take it on with my team! See you later!"
"Oh! Hey, <player>! Have you been catching lots of Pokémon? I'm doing pretty good on that front, at least. I caught so many Pokémon in Petalburg Woods that I ran out of Poké Balls! Oh yeah... And I passed Mr. Briney when I was in Petalburg Woods. Hmm. I guess he must have been on his way home to his cottage on Route 104. <player>, you just moved here so there's no way you could know, but Mr. Briney was once a highly respected seafarer."
Route 110
"Hey, <player>! It's been ages! Nice timing, too. I was just searching for Pokémon, you know? My dad is always going on about how nature used to be even more diverse, way back in the day. He says that there used to be way more kinds of Pokémon than there are now! So that's why we do fieldwork, him and me. We really want to find out what happened to those Pokémon in the past. On my journey up to now, I've met a lot of different Pokémon, and I think I've gotten to understand a lot of them, too. Me and my Pokémon have really grown. So... How about a little battle?"
  • When defeated:
"Yikes! You're stronger than I thought you'd be!"
  • After being defeated:
"<player>, you've been busy training, too, haven't you? Oops! But look at us! Our teams look pretty tired. Let's get them taken care of first. And now I think you deserve a reward too! Here, this is from me! That's a Dowsing Machine. Try it out—if there's a hidden item anywhere near you, that little thing will react to tell you. Pay attention, and it'll lead you right to items! And it's fun to see all those waving bits above your head. Try it, and I but you'll be hooked! Careful—you won't be able to sneak up on Pokémon while you wear it! See you later then, <player>! Let's meet again! I hope we'll both be able to meet even more Pokémon on our journeys!"
Route 112
"Ah! <player>! Look! Right up there! That's Mt. Chimney! It sure is big... No more like huge... It totally takes my breath away! I'd love to take the Cable Car all the way to the top someday... Hm? Hey, <player>, don't your Pokémon seem a bit ragged around the edges? Here, let me give them a little boost! Here! Take this, too! I bet you can find all kinds of ways to use it in the mountains that lie ahead! But it won't work outside of battle if you don't have a Badge from Lavaridge Gym. Gasp! What am I doing nattering away here? I'm supposed to be on my way to Fallarbor to visit Professor Cozmo! I'm off for now, <player>, but let's battle next time!"
Route 119
"<player>! Gosh, where have you been hiding? I've been looking all over for you! Oh... Where did you get that thing on your wrist? That's a pretty fancy-looking bracelet... ... Wow! So that's a Mega Bracelet? And you can use it for Mega Evolution... I guess now you can keep getting even closer to your Pokémon, huh? Some guys have all the luck... But I'm not about to lose to you and some accessory! Let's see who's best in battle! Are your Pokémon all ready? Of course they are! Let's go!"
  • When defeated:
"Achah! You're as strong as I expected, <player>!"
  • After being defeated:
"Hm! Well, you did battle me like I asked, so I'll give you a reward."
"If you use Fly, your Pokémon will carry you back to anywhere you've been before. But you must have the Gym Badge from Fortree City to use Fly outside of battle. That's the most important bit, so don't forget! Maybe you should Fly home and visit Littleroot sometimes. I bet your mom worries about you, <player>... Well, till we meet again! And next time I won't lose!"
Sootopolis City
"<player>! I heard on the news that things were going haywire around Sootopolis. And them I saw you on the BuzzNav, <player>! I couldn't just sit there and do nothing when I knew you were here in the thick of it, so I came flying! Bwuh?! Isn't that Team Aqua? And Team Magma?! OK, can I just say that I am, like, shocked and confused on so many levels right now? This is probably something way bigger than I can even imagine, isn't it? So I'm not even going to ask right now. I'm going to try to find what I can do the help and them I'm going to do my best with that. And I'm going to keep on hoping and believing that y-you'll be OK out there, <player>. Because... Because you... You're the best friend I have!"
  • If talked to again:
"I'm going to try to find what I can do to help, and then I'm going to do my best with that. And I'm going to keep on hoping and believing that you'll be OK out there, <player>. Please...give it everything you've got!"
  • After having defeated/captured Groudon/Kyogre:
"<player>!!! It's really over, isn't it... Phew! And it's finally just the two of us again. So I've got to say...thanks for everything you've done for our region, <player>. You know, I thought we were supposed to have set out from Littleroot together, but... But you, <player>... It seems like you just keep getting further and further ahead of me... I even started to feel like you'd gone somewhere I can't even reach. It's pretty lonely, you know? Not! What would you think if I really said something like that? Hee hee! Anyway, you did something really amazing today, so try to take it easy for a while! See you later!
Pokémon League
"<player>, wait! I've got some advice you've got to hear before you challenge the Champion... Huh? Wait-what? What? <player>... Could it be that... It's already over? No waaay! ... Just joking! It's OK! It's fine! Rules are rules, right? <player>! Honestly, congratulations!"
  • After having entered the Hall of Fame
"Welcome back, <player>. I just thought, you know, that since we were both here and all...that I'd wait for you. We set out on this journey together, right? So maybe we should finish it together, too. Hee hee... So...come on! Let's go home! Back to Littleroot Town!"
Route 103 (post-game, after credits)
"Here we are on Route 103 again! Wow, it’s so nostalgic, you know? Oh! Remember that pond? This is where we first battled, isn’t it? ...<player>! Could you do something for me? Come on! Let’s battle one more time! I wanna know what you saw on your journey, how you felt, and what you experienced out there. I want to understand everything about you and your Pokémon, <player>! And then... I want you to understand everything about me and mine!"
  • After being defeated:
"...Thanks, <player>! You really are a Champion! Meeting so many different people... And encountering so many Pokémon... It’s like... I don’t know... It’s been really, really fun! Ah! <player>! Look at that!

Optional names

In the game, two of the optional names—one in Ruby and one in Sapphire—refer to "land" and "sea" respectively. In the English version, these are Terra and Marina; in the Japanese version, ムツミ Mutsumi and ナミ Nami (陸 mutsu means land and 波 nami means a wave of water). This is also the case in other languages. Unlike Brendan's name list, none of the three shared names correspond to this theme.

May in the anime

In the anime

Main article: May (anime)

In the anime, a character based on May was a Pokémon Coordinator and Ash's traveling companion throughout the Advanced Generation series.

In the manga

Her counterpart in the Pokémon Adventures manga is Sapphire who, unlike her other counterparts, takes up Gym challenges and is an all-around tomboy thanks to a traumatic incident with Ruby where a Salamence attacked them when they were children. She does have a feminine side however, as is shown in later volumes.

Another counterpart to May, also called Sapphire, appears in the Pokémon Ruby-Sapphire manga. Just like May's anime counterpart, she is a Coordinator who chooses Torchic as her starter Pokémon.

Although they do not look alike, she has the same Japanese default name as Haruka from the Pokémon Chamo-Chamo ☆ Pretty ♪ manga series. Likewise, Haruka is a Coordinator who also chooses Torchic as her starter Pokémon, just like May's anime counterpart.

Trivia

  • As the player character (along with Brendan), they are the only set of player characters that have both a mother and a father present in the games.
  • May and Brendan are the only rivals who can't be fought in rematches after the player defeats the Elite Four.
    • Before Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, they were also the only rivals whose starter Pokémon does not reach its final form.
  • In Emerald, at Lilycove City, May was seen Flying, although none of the Pokemon in her party knew Fly.
