Smack Down (Japanese: うちおとす Knock Down) is a damage-dealing Rock-type move introduced in Generation V. It was TM23 from Generation V to Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and is TM179 in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Effect

Smack Down inflicts damage. If the target is off the ground, it gains the Landed status.

Specifically, if the target is Flying-type, has the Ability Levitate or Eelevate, or is under the effect of Magnet Rise or Telekinesis, Smack Down applies its effect to that Pokémon, causing that target to become landed (vulnerable to Ground-type moves and affected by terrain and Arena Trap) until that target switches out. Smack Down also removes the effects of Magnet Rise and Telekinesis. The effect of Smack Down is not applied if it hits the target's substitute or if the target is in the semi-invulnerable turn of Sky Drop, holds an Iron Ball, or is under the effect of Gravity or Ingrain.

Magnet Rise fails if used by a Pokémon under the effect of Smack Down; the move Telekinesis cannot affect a Pokémon under the effect of Smack Down. The Air Balloon does not apply if the Pokémon is under the effect of Smack Down.

Smack Down can hit Pokémon that have the Sky-High status (during the semi-invulnerable turns of Fly, Bounce, and Sky Drop). If it hits a Pokémon that is using Fly or Bounce, it will knock it down, cancelling the move; if it hits a Pokémon using or affected by Sky Drop, it will not be knocked down. A Pokémon under the effect of Smack Down can still use these moves on subsequent turns.

Smack Down can also be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination with the user gaining an extra three appeal points if any of the moves Entrainment, Hold Hands or Play Nice was used in the prior turn.

Smack Down inflicts damage. If the enemy is Flying-type, has the Ability Levitate, or is under the effect of Magnet Rise or Telekinesis, it will be grounded, which allows Ground-type moves to hit it. The enemy will also be unable to move in the air (for example, unable to move over water tiles). This move can also hit enemies during the semi-invulnerable turns of Fly, Bounce, and Sky Drop. The grounded status condition lasts for 10 turns.

Pokémon Move Icon Image Level Learned Cooldown Description

Buzzwole
7 6s Has the user deliver an uppercut punch to an opposing Pokémon in the designated direction, dealing damage to it and throwing it into the air. While the thrown Pokémon is airborne, the user can use this move again to perform a follow-up attack that smacks that Pokémon down to the ground, dealing damage to all opposing Pokémon in an area of effect centered on the smacked-down Pokémon. If the users does not follow up on the initial uppercut attack, the opposing Pokémon will fall to the ground on its own. If this occurs, damage is still dealt to all opposing Pokémon in an area of effect centered on the point of impact. If this move deals damage to Pokémon on the opposing team, the user's muscle gauge increases by 1 increment for each one that was hit.
Upgraded to Smack Down+ when the Pokémon reaches Lv. 13.
Upgrade: Widens the area of effect in which damage is dealt when the opposing Pokémon targeted by this move hits the ground. Also, the user's muscle gauge will now increase by 2 increments for each Pokémon on the opposing team that takes damage from this move.

Tinkaton
7 6s Has the user charge power, then use its hammer to send a rock flying to the designated location, dealing damage to opposing Pokémon at the rock's point of impact and applying a slowing effect to them. Damage is also dealt to opposing Pokémon that are hit by the swinging hammer. The longer power is charged, the farther the rock can fly. The stronger the hammer, the farther the rock can fly.
Upgraded to Smack Down+ when the Pokémon reaches Lv. 13.
Upgrade: Reduces this move's cooldown.
