Espeon (Japanese: エーフィ Eifie) is a Psychic-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.
It evolves from Eevee when leveled up with high friendship during the day or with a Sun Shard in the player's Bag.
(Specifics may differ in past games. Refer to Game data→Evolution data for these details.)
It is one of Eevee's final forms, the others being Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon, and Sylveon.
Espeon is one of Wes's first Pokémon in Pokémon Colosseum, alongside Umbreon.
Biology
Espeon is a quadrupedal, feline-like mammalian Pokémon with slender legs and dainty paws. It is covered in fine, lilac fur. Its ears are large, and it has purple eyes with white pupils. There are tufts of fur near its eyes, and a small, red gem embedded in its forehead. It also has a thin, forked tail.
Espeon's velvety fur is so sensitive that it can sense minuscule shifts in the air, allowing it to predict the weather and its enemies' thoughts and movements. When doing so, the tip of its tail quivers. The gem on Espeon's forehead glows when it unleashes psychic energy from the gem and darkens when all of the built-up energy has been exhausted. Espeon builds up its psychic power by bathing in the sunlight. As such, it does not handle battles at night well. As mentioned in Pokémon Sleep, Espeon is known to sleep deeply during the night.[1] Espeon shows extreme loyalty to any Trainer that it considers worthy, even being said to have awakened its psychic powers from its desire to protect its Trainer; some sources, however, theorize that its powers were born from its need to keep itself safe.
This Pokémon is rare in the wild, instead being more commonly found in urban areas, under the ownership of other Trainers. In Generation II, Morning Sun was its signature move.
Evolution
Espeon evolves from Eevee.
(For specifics on this Pokémon's Evolution in the games, refer to Game data → Evolution data.)

Evolution data
Espeon evolves from Eevee when leveled up with high friendship (220 before Generation VIII or 160 since) during the day, except in areas with a Moss Rock or Ice Rock, or if the evolutionary conditions for it to evolve into Sylveon have also been met. Eevee will also never evolve into Espeon in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, due to the absence of a day-night cycle, or in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, as Espeon is not present in those games. In Pokémon XD only, Eevee will evolve if the player has a Sun Shard in their Bag.

Trivia
- Due to the absence of a day-night cycle in FireRed and LeafGreen, in order for an Espeon or Umbreon to be obtained and added to the Pokédex in those games, an Eevee must be traded to Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, evolved there, and then traded back, or else traded from Pokémon Colosseum or Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.
- Espeon shares its category with Sunflora and Volcarona. They are all known as the Sun Pokémon.
- Espeon has blue inner ears in the games, but in the animated series, they are often purple.
- If one were to rearrange the Pokérap GS so all the Pokémon are in National Pokédex order, Espeon and Remoraid would remain in their respective positions in the song.
- Espeon is the only Eeveelution without a type advantage over another.
Concept and development
Espeon was designed by Atsuko Nishida.[2][3]
Origin
Espeon's
Spaceworld '97 design.
In the Pokémon Gold and Silver Spaceworld '97 demo, Espeon is shown to be yellow, rather than pink, which reflects various older design ideas around the Psychic-type being themed around gold, seen in the Marsh Badge and Generation I Psychic-types often being colored similarly. This would be changed as soon as the Spaceworld '99 demo, where Espeon is seen with its standard pink design.
Because of its feline appearance, Espeon appears to be based on the legend of the bakeneko and the nekomata; both are magical cat yōkai described as mysterious and intelligent, with the distinction between the two being that the latter is depicted with a forked tail. It may also be based on the mythological lynx, a feline creature that possesses the psychic power of clairvoyance. The jewel on its head may also be a reference to the carbunclo, a mythological South American creature with a jewel or mirror on its forehead, and sometimes described as a feline. The position of the jewel also evokes the idea of a "third eye".
Its large ears can be traced from various felines such as caracals, oriental shorthairs, lynxes, and possibly servals, while its fine hair is similar to that of a sphynx cat. Espeon's ability to sense minute shifts in the air with its sensitive fur mirrors a cat's ability to use its sensitive whiskers to detect the slightest directional change in a breeze.
Name origin
Espeon may be a combination of the acronym ESP (extrasensory perception) and eon (an immeasurably long period of time, possibly referring to how long evolution takes naturally). Eon is a suffix all Eevee evolutions share and was Eevee's English prototype name.
Eifie may be a combination of エスパー ESPer (one who has extrasensory perception) and フィール feel. It is also similar to イーブイ Eievui (Eevee's Japanese name).
