Zygarde (Japanese: ジガルデ Zygarde) is a Legendary Pokémon and a major character in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Zygarde is said to be monitoring the ecosystem and maintaining order in the Kalos region. It is often associated with a man called L.

In the core series games

History

Pokémon X and Y

A 50% Forme Zygarde can be found in Terminus Cave, said to be monitoring the ecosystem. Sometime after a similar set of events to those titles[a], it is revealed that Zygarde had rescued every living thing, including Lysandre who was buried within the ruins of Team Flare Secret HQ, from the radius of blast of the ultimate weapon, though Lysandre had lost most of his memory and had been afflicted by similar longevity that AZ had experienced. Indebted to the Pokémon, Lysandre took the pseudonym "L", and agreed to help his savior prepare for the coming crisis in Lumiose City.

Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon

It is implied that the Zygarde that appear in these games and Pokémon Legends: Z-A are related or even the same, but this is not confirmed. This suggestion comes from L, who explains that the shot from the ultimate weapon had scattered Zygarde's Cells and Cores across the world, landing in other locations (such as Alola) where it had absorbed the power from lands it had appeared in.[2] In Sun and Moon, these Zygarde are found as Zygarde Cells and Zygarde Cores scattered throughout the Alola region, being found similarly to item balls. Professor Sycamore had asked his assistants, Dexio and Sina, to research the lying cause of Zygarde's appearance in Alola. The duo gives the player the Zygarde Cube that is found by Professor Sycamore as a way to help research the Pokémon. Zygarde can them be assembled at the Reassembly Unit on Route 16. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Zygarde is instead given to the player by Dexio in its 10% Forme with 40 Cells already found in the Zygarde Cube in the postgame on Route 16. The other 50% of its cell/cores are found as part of a 50% Forme Zygarde in Resolution Cave on Poni Island.[b] During its time in Alola, it is assumed that Zygarde is there due to the appearance of Ultra Beasts, extraterrestrial Pokémon from Ultra Space that can be described as invasive species.[3][4]

Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Zygarde appears throughout the game's events, often meeting with the player to test or study their abilities. One of Zygarde's Cells first appears on the train to Lumiose City, watching the player on their phone. The Zygarde Cell jumps into their travel bag, unaware to the player and brought to Hotel Z after some shenanigans the player had to go through. This Cell in particular leaves the bag, only being noticed by AZ during mid discussion with Team MZ. After being taught how to Mega Evolve, Emma asks the player for help on finding the whereabouts of a four-legged Pokémon, referring to Zygarde.

The player first meets the Pokémon in person in its 10% Forme, Emma suggesting to follow the Pokémon. It brings them to an Absol endowed with Mega Power, being on the verge of Rogue Mega Evolving.

During Main Mission 10: The Secrets of Mega Evolution, the player will battle Zygarde in its 10% Forme when L introduces himself. Here, Zygarde provides the player with a strange pebble. L discusses with the player that they are to provide Zygarde with support with the ability to use Mega Evolution and Plus Moves to take down the consistent threat of Rogue Mega Evolution. He further explains that Zygarde is unable to Mega Evolve. L mentions that Emma is suspicious, unaware of his own connection to Team Flare and suggests that Zygarde may be interested in whatever Emma may be assuming, so that he may help with the on going issue in Lumiose.

Complete Forme Zygarde striking down Hyperrogue Ange Floette

After the player is brought to Hotel Richissime for the second time, Zygarde appears, with L, during the finals of Jacinthe's tournament. It takes notice of the player again. According to L, Zygarde's own wish is to maintain order throughout the land, hoping the player would accept a battle. Jacinthe is enthralled by Zygarde's behavior and allows it to take part in the tournament, having it battle against the player in the semi-finals. Zygarde collects 40% more of its Cells, including a Zygarde Core, where it Forme Changes into Zygarde 50% Forme and battles the player a second time. Despite Emma's own suspicions the player's friend does not seem to think Zygarde is dangerous.

During the crisis of Ange, a trapped Urbain/Taunie in Prism Tower sees Zygarde at the rooftop of the Magenta District. With the help of Team MZ, Fist of Justice, the Rust Syndicate, the Society of Battle Connoisseurs, and Team Flare Nouveau, the player would meet up with Zygarde and travel higher to meet up with L. After agreeing to L's request, Zygarde proceeds to transform into its Complete Forme with all of its remaining Cells recovered (including one Zygarde Cell that was living in Hotel Z before attaching onto the player in secret). Together, the player and Zygarde worked to defeat Hyperrogue Ange Floette, finishing with Core Enforcer. Despite this, Ange attempted one final blast to destroy all of Lumiose City. After clenching the Pebble, it transformed into Zygardite, which the player then throws to Zygarde. Using their Key Stone, the player lets Zygarde Mega Evolve, who proceeds to destroy the incoming blast with Nihil Light.

After the credits, L reveals Zygarde is resting after the battle before warning Team MZ about the arrival of Xerneas and Yveltal. Upon defeating L, Zygarde appears and encourages the player to face it under the remains of Prism Tower in Wild Zone 20. Upon reaching the area, the player proceeds to fight Zygarde in all three of its forms in a row before capturing it. L returns after capture, providing the player with a Zygarde Cube, and more context on some of Zygarde's own history: after Lysandre had used the ultimate weapon five years prior, Zygarde had its pieces scattered from the blast, absorbing the power of the land it had crossed. L muses that the use of Nihil Light reminded him of the Z-Moves found in Alola.

Anytime after the credits, the player is able to read a letter left by AZ, explaining that he never thought that anyone would be able to Mega Evolve Zygarde, suggesting that in his 3,000 years of living, the events of the title was the first time that Zygarde was able to Mega Evolve in any capacity.

Personality and characteristics

Main article: Zygarde (Pokémon)

Due to its unique biology, Zygarde is made up of multiple life forms known as Zygarde Cells, constructing most of its body, the number of Cells change based on the Forme it takes. In Addition, Zygarde must also contain a number of Zygarde Cores, having at least one per a formation. Zygarde Cores act as the Pokémon's "brain", allowing it to make decisions, while Zygarde Cells act as "eyes" for Zygarde, allowing it observe multiple locations and surroundings. Zygarde was able to observe the player's own movement by sending one of its Zygarde Cells into their bag at the start of the game.

As the Order Pokémon, Zygarde cares about the ecosystem and will do anything to defend it. While wary of humans, it is willing to trust those who have earned it, and assist Zygarde in stopping Ange and Rogue Mega Evolution crisis. It is fleeting in nature, appearing and disappearing without warning as quickly as possible. It is even seen to trust and save the lives of those who can be considered villainous or destructive, such as L. It's possible however that Zygarde only trusted L due to his amnesia.

Zygarde seems to take selective interest in particular figures who it may deem helpful, notably the player and L. It does not take much interest in other people, often focused on protecting the order of things. In inverse, many people are interested in Zygarde's own myserious nature, feeling excitement in relation to it. In Mega Dimension, Korrina references Zygarde's ability to Mega Evolve when she meets the player saying, "you’re the Trainer who got Zygarde to Mega Evolve and saved Lumiose", as Zygarde has never been seen Mega Evolving prior. Additionally, Grisham suggests he is a bit bitter that Zygarde chose the player over him, but feels better about the Pokémon's choice after a battle.

Zygarde has three forms: its 10% Forme, its 50% Forme, its Complete Forme, and its Mega Evolved form, which are all composed of Zygarde Cells and Zygarde Cores. Zygarde's Cells and Cores are initially scattered across Kalos, being collected by L using the Zygarde Cube over the course of the game. Zygarde takes its 10% Forme in Main Mission 9 to lead the player to a Rogue Mega Evolved Absol. Zygarde takes its 50% Forme in Main Mission 30 to challenge the player in "Le Super-Tournoi de Jacinthe". Zygarde takes its Complete Forme in Main Mission 37 thanks to L to aid the player in defeating Hyperrogue Ange Floette. Zygarde is Mega Evolved by the player using the Zygardite to stop Ange Floette's final Light of Ruin and save Lumiose City from destruction.

Trivia

  • Zygarde has the most battles of any Legendary Pokémon encounter in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, with a total of five battles across its forms when including individual phases.
  • Zygarde shares similarities with the Arceus character in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
    • Both are the featured Pokémon of their respective Legends games.
    • Both are the final/post-game bosses and are fought after capturing the respective members or groups associated with them.
    • Both battles are arena-style boss battles similar to the gameplay of noble Pokémon and Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon.

Notes

  1. Legends: Z-A makes reference to both X and Y, as opposed to leaning towards one version.
  2. This Zygarde 50% Forme is also found at Resolution Cave's deepest room, which resembles Zygarde's room in Terminus Cave in Kalos. The exact relationship is undefined.
