Carmine (Japanese: ゼイユ Zeiyu) is a rival character introduced in The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero. She is originally from Kitakami and attends Blueberry Academy with her younger brother, Kieran. She is strong-willed and can be a little selfish, but always looks out for her little brother—even if she isn’t the best at showing it. Many people say that she can be chilly towards people from other regions.[4]

The Teal Mask

Carmine is a student of Blueberry Academy native to Kitakami. She and Kieran are chosen to accompany the incoming students from Naranja AcademyS/Uva AcademyV on a cultural tour of the area under the watch of her teacher Briar. Upon arrival, she immediately picks a fight with the player and, despite Kieran's protestations, forces them to battle her. She later forces her brother to assist the player during the orienteering exercise.

Later, Carmine meets up with Kieran and the player during the Festival of Masks. She challenges the player to beat her high score in Ogre Oustin', after which they have a chance encounter with Ogerpon, a Pokémon from a local legend that became vilified after a battle with another group of Pokémon called the Loyal Three, who flees after dropping her Teal Mask. Knowing Kieran idolized Ogerpon, Carmine makes the player keep all knowledge of the incident from him, fearing he will blame them for missing a chance to meet it. The next day, the player and Carmine learn from the siblings' grandfather that the "Loyal" Three were actually a group of bandits who attacked Ogerpon's Trainer and stole three masks made for her by the siblings' distant ancestor; Ogerpon slew the Lousy Three, but the villagers believed she was attacking them and came to fear her.

Enraged that she had been propagating a trio of common crooks, Carmine vows to repair the Teal Mask, which had been damaged when Ogerpon dropped it, in order to makes amends. She helps the player retrieve some crystal from a nearby spring only to discover that Kieran, having overheard the conversation and erroneously assuming they were excluding him out of spite, stole the mask and demands the player battle him for control over it. The player quickly defeats him, but the Lousy Three unexpectedly come back to life and are given food and Ogerpon's stolen masks by the ignorant villagers. When Carmine is unable to get a word in to convince them otherwise, she form a "Mask Retrieval Squad" with the player and Ogerpon to deal with them and retrieve the masks while Kieran reveals to the town the true nature of the story. With Ogerpon's reputation rehabilitated, the group returns to Ogerpon's mountain home, where Ogerpon chooses the player to be her Trainer. However, a jealous Kieran, to Carmine's annoyance, demands a final battle with the player for the right to take Ogerpon, irrespective of Ogerpon's wishes.

After the end of the tour, Kieran and Carmine are to return early to Blueberry Academy due to an unexpected development in the Great Crater of Paldea, with Carmine giving the final farewell on behalf of Kieran.

The Indigo Disk

Upon returning to Blueberry Academy, Carmine attempts to get right back to her school life. However, she becomes concerned for Kieran when she notices a drastic chance in his attitude. This concern is further enforced when Kieran becomes Champion of the school's unofficial League and starts using his new authority to bully other students out of the club. Realizing Kieran has become obsessed with proving he's a superior trainer to the player, Carmine, despite club member Lacey's insistence on keeping it a 'League matter', secretly lobbies to have the player brought over to the school under the auspices of wanting to show off her home turf to get them to snap some sense into her brother. However, another club member, Drayton, finds out about this and manipulates the player into joining the school's League in order to humiliate Kieran in front of the school, much to Carmine's fury.

After Kieran is defeated by the player and becomes the school Champion, Briar informs them and Carmine that she's recently gotten permission from Paldea League chairwoman and Top Champion Geeta to search Area Zero for a mysterious Pokémon called Terapagos. When Kieran quickly joins her and the player, Carmine, suspicious that her brother has yet to give up trying to humiliate them, joins as well. Her suspicions are confirmed when Kieren, egged on by a glory-blinded Briar, attempts to use Terapagos to defeat the player, resulting in the Pokémon losing control of its power and the player stepping in to subdue it. Carmine attempts to help, but with the bulk of her team already taken out by the other powerful Pokémon in the area, she is forced to get Kieran to grow up and help.

  1. She is the older sister of Kieran, who is stated to be an adolescent.[1] When Carmine refers to the village kids, she includes herself among them, implying that she still considers herself to be a kid.[2] In French, she explicitly states that she is still an adolescent.[3] Her actual age is not otherwise known.
