Kieran and Carmine with the player during the Festival of Masks

The Festival of Masks (Japanese: オモテ祭り Mask festival) is a special event that occurs in Kitakami, beginning at night. It had existed for many years, but following the slaying of Okidogi, Munkidori, and Fezandipiti by Ogerpon, the festival was altered to honor the Loyal Three's perceived sacrifices.

History

The villagers of Kitakami have held the Festival of Masks for generations, during which they wore masks of many different Pokémon. These masks originally depicted Pokémon such as Hoothoot, Squirtle, Lapras, Weezing, and others. The masks were carved by an unnamed mask maker, the ancestor of the siblings Kieran and Carmine. One day, a man and an ogre traveled to the land of Kitakami. When they arrived at the village, the villagers refused to allow the duo to enter, as they were scared by their appearance.

One day, the man and ogre returned to join the village festivals, now wearing masks that concealed their true identities. These masks soon attracted the attention of a trio of greedy Pokémon. This trio snuck into the home of the man and the ogre, the Dreaded Den, and stole the Wellspring Mask, Hearthflame Mask, and Cornerstone Mask from them, with the man only able to save the Teal Mask.

After learning what had occurred, the ogre returned to the village and slew the trio. As the villagers were unaware of the trio's theft, they assumed the ogre was a villain and the trio had perished protecting the village. To honor what they believed were the sacrifices of the Pokémon, now known as the Loyal Three, the villagers incorporated the story into the festival's tradition, and began wearing masks depicting Ogerpon, Okidogi, Munkidori, and Fezandipiti, in addition to Eevee, and Pikachu. During the following years, Ogerpon visited the festivals, but now alone.

Many years later, the descendants of the mask maker, Kieran and Carmine, together with their grandparents, Yukito and Hideko, live in Mossui Town and take part in the festivals of the present day. One day, the player arrived in Kitakami for a school trip with three other students and Briar to explore and learn about the new land and participate in the festival with the two siblings.

The Festival of Masks is based on the concept of traditional Japanese festivals that are typically held around late summer or early autumn. They are usually celebrated in relation to the local kami and features folk dances and other forms of ceremonies, along with various stalls selling food and goods related to the festivities. Notably, the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri is one of the largest festivals in the Tōhoku region, featuring a procession of large illuminated floats depicting scenes of local legends.

The theme of masks may take its inspiration from the stylistic masks used in Noh, classical Japanese dance-drama.
