Sandstorm is a non-damaging Rock-type move introduced in Generation II.

Contents

Effect

Generation II onwards

When this move is used a sandstorm will brew. This effect will last for 5 turns. This clears any other weather effect.

While Sandstorm is in effect, all Pokémon who are not of the Steel-, Rock-, or Ground-types will be damaged between turns.

Generation III onwards

Sandstorm works similarly to its Generation II incarnation. A few differences to note are that there is now an ability called Sand Stream that can activate a semi-permanent sandstorm in battle, and there is an ability called Sand Veil that not only ups a Pokémon's evasion in a sandstorm, but also gives it immunity to its damaging effects.

Generation IV onwards

In addition to all previous effects from Generation III, all Rock-type Pokémon will have their Special Defense raised by 1.5 times for the duration of the sandstorm.

In the anime

Pokémon

Steelix. Some of the rocks in Steelix's upper-body spin and sand comes out of them.
