Kyogre is a massive, whale-like Pokémon with two big pectoral fins, each with four white square-shaped nails. It has a deep blue body and a white chin area with two small spikes protruding under it. Above each eye are two white, oval-shaped spots. Kyogre has red stripes around its chin, eyes, dorsal fins, and torso. These stripes glow when Kyogre is brimming with power. It has a short, pointed tail. Near the tail are two small back fins tattered with four trailing parts, with the inner ones being smaller than the outer. Its eyes are small, yellow, and shadowed with black.
Kyogre is believed to be the personification of the sea itself, and is described in in legends and myths as the "maker of oceans" who created the world's oceans and expanded them by generating heavy tidal waves. It is also capable of summoning intense rainstorms to cloak the world's entire sky and weaken Fire-typemoves; because of this, it was hailed as a savior for quenching areas of the world plagued with droughts. As a super-ancient Pokémon, it is one of the longest-lived species, thought to have lived for thousands of years. Kyogre can fly when there is no water for it to swim in. Though normally a calm and helpful Pokémon, in olden times, it encountered its rival, Groudon, and for years, the two engaged in a cataclysmic battle for dominion of the world. They were stopped by the intervention of Rayquaza,[1][2] who sealed Kyogre within Seafloor Cavern,[3] where it has since slumbered in the marine trench. During its sleep, Kyogre's body is encased in a layer of rock that will be shattered once it is awakened by the Red or Blue Orb. It lives in the sea. Kyogre loves Kyogre Treats made by Snacksworth, who once encountered it in the past. As seen with Hyperspace Primordial Sea, Kyogre's subconcious takes the appearance of the Cave of Origin.
Kyogre can undergo Primal Reversion and become Primal Kyogre. It retains its general body structure, but it grows larger and its main skin color becomes a darker shade of blue. The red markings along its body become light blue, and its eyes glow yellow with orange irises and orange-red pupils. The markings on its pectoral fins slightly change to form α symbols, which connect to its outer nails with red markings connecting the inner nails. Every part of its skin that was originally white becomes clear and translucent, with the large ovals on its head now connected to clear markings stretching from its tail to its forehead, where another α symbol is formed. The trailing parts of its tail grow longer and gain translucent webbing, and the areas between its pectoral fin markings also become clear. The translucent parts of its body reveal organ-like structures that glow with a mysterious light; it has a large "organ" at the center of its body, two smaller ones aligned with the large oval markings, and two more located in its pectoral fins.
Primal Kyogre is said to be Kyogre's true, original, and fully powered form, having received its name from the ancient people of the Hoennregion who it tormented in the past.[4] The energy that fills it spills forth as seawater, which its body composition is nearly identical to, while its skin glows similarly to that of sapphire.[5] Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon fought each other over the natural energy that was abundant in the primal age millennia ago; one of their clashes lasted for 20 days straight and threatened to disrupt the planet's balance and destroy it before Rayquaza stopped them.[6][7] Research conducted by the Weather Institute reveals that Primal Kyogre can annihilate all life before resetting the planet.[8] It was formed from the natural primal energy that existed in Hoenn's ancient past, which it has to feed on so it can maintain its transformation in the present day[9] after it was undone by Mega Rayquaza.[10] Due to the lack of natural energy in the surface, it is forced to find either a source underground, such as the stones in the Cave of Origin, or the Blue Orb, which contains the remaining energy of the primordial world, allowing it to undergo Primal Reversion. With its weather-manipulating powers, Primal Kyogre can summon storms which drastically raise the sea level and outright nullify Fire-type moves rather than simply weaken them. In the Mega Evolution Pokédex Short, it is said to have widened the seas by a large margin simply by taking a swim.
Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire: Kyogre is the focus of the second Bonus Field on the Sapphire Field. It will first use Sheer Cold to freeze the ball in place, then create whirlpools to trap the ball further. Finally, it will dive into the water to evade being hit completely. However, air bubbles will appear where it is about to rise out of the water. Kyogre must be hit 15 times in three minutes to win. After beating the round twice, it will be captured.
Kyogre is named in mythology as the Pokémon that expanded the sea by covering the land with torrential rains and towering tidal waves. It took to sleep after a cataclysmic battle with Groudon.
Kyogre is said to be the personification of the sea itself. Legends tell of its many clashes against Groudon, as each sought to gain the power of nature.
Primal Kyogre is an additional form for Kyogre that is the result of undergoing Primal Reversion. If Kyogre is sent into battle while holding a Blue Orb, it will change into Primal Kyogre; it only loses its form when the battle ends.
Kyogre made its physical animated series debut in Gaining Groudon. Team Magma had captured Kyogre but didn't have the correct orb to control it, so they planned to make a trade with Team Aqua, who had captured Groudon. The trade was about to be made when Archie decided to use Kyogre to destroy everyone, including his fellow henchmen. In The Scuffle of Legends, the battle between Kyogre and Groudon occurred.
In Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, a Kyogre was among countless other Water-typePokémon that arrived at Samiya when Ash Ketchum replaced all of the Sea Crown's crystals. However, when the Phantom attempted to make all the Water-types panic using supersonic waves from his ship, Kyogre was part of the ensuing commotion. Manaphy calmed them down using Heart Swap to rid the Pokémon of their confusion, and some Wailord broke open the Phantom's ship, followed by some Chinchou swimming into the opening and short-circuiting the ship. Kyogre then used Hyper Beam on the ship, destroying it.
In the beginning scene of Hoopa and the Clash of Ages, a Kyogre was summoned by Hoopa to defeat it in the past. A Primal Kyogre was later one of six Legendary Pokémon summoned and hypnotized by the shadow Hoopa Unbound as its reinforcements. It and its teammates engaged in a battle against the Latios, Latias, and ShinyRayquaza summoned to protect the real Hoopa in Dahara City. Eventually, after the shadow Hoopa was sealed in a Prison Bottle, the hypnosis on Primal Kyogre and the other Legendary Pokémon was lifted, and Primal Kyogre departed for its home.
In The One That Didn't Get Away!, a Kyogre had been poisoned and was being pursued by Hunter D and his crew members. However, Lana was able to feed it some bait laced with Antidote, restoring its health and allowing it to defeat the hunter. However, Kyogre was still enraged because of the hunters' actions, forcing Lana to reel it in with her fishing rod and have her newly evolved Primarina sing to it in order to calm it down. After Lana calmed Kyogre down, it thanked her for restoring its health and calming it down before leaving peacefully.
Minor appearances
Kyogre debuted in the opening sequence of Jirachi: Wish Maker, where it was seen swimming across the ocean near the seabed.
In The Cavern, a wild Kyogre was awoken by Archie inside the Seafloor Cavern, who used the Blue Orb to turn it into its primal form. It escaped the Cavern and swam through its surrounding waters and surfaced above the ocean before creating a massive storm, threatening to destroy Hoenn. It was last seen attacking Archie and other members of Team Aqua when he tried to calm it down.
GOTCHA!
A Kyogre briefly appeared as a silhouette in GOTCHA!.
Kyogre's first appearance was in Assaulted by Pelipper I. It was awakened by Team Aqua in order to achieve their goal of expanding the sea. Wattson, Flannery, and Winona tried to stop it but failed due to Team Aqua's interference, and it ended up reaching Sootopolis City, where it fought for days on end with Groudon. Ruby, having trapped Sapphire in Wallace's air car for her safety, was joined by a reformed Courtney and succeeded in quelling both the titans using the Red and Blue Orbs and Norman's temporary control over Rayquaza. In the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc, Blaise and Amber tricked Hoopa into summoning Kyogre and Groudon from their places of rest. This, in addition to the return of Archie and Maxie, was set up in order to prevent a meteoroid from destroying the world.
After being released from a Poké Ball, Kyogre uses Hydro Pump from its mouth. The water is non-damaging but causes characters to be knocked back with extreme force. Touching Kyogre's body will cause damage.
"A Sea Basin Pokémon. It brought down heavy rains, which formed seas and relieved droughts. It is usually found slumbering at the bottom of an ocean trench. Its attack Sheer Cold is a technique so powerful, it causes any opponent it strikes to faint instantly. In battle, it causes clouds to form and drenches the area in rain. It once had a fierce battle with Groudon."
Kyogre returns as a Poké Ball summon with faster movement as well as a longer time and more KO ability. In these games, it can also appear from a Master Ball.
Trophy information
NA: This Water-typePokémon roughly resembles an orca whale, though its large fins also look a bit like hands. Be wary of its Hydro Pump attack, which is capable of sending you flying off the stage. Even worse, it will chase after you, making it even harder to recover from the attack.
PAL: This orca-like Water-type Pokémon is known for the distinctive shape of its fins and the red markings along its body. It will use Hydro Pump to send fighters flying off the stage, and then proceed to chase after them to make recovering from the attack a nightmare.
Additionally, a Kyogre that knows Dive will allow the player to avoid underwater battles with Pokémon Trainers. This action also has its own animation and a larger hitbox.
Origin
Kyogre may be a personification of the Earth's oceans. Its conflict with Groudon is similar to that of Leviathan and Behemoth, who would start a battle that would kill them both at the end of time. Like Kyogre, Leviathan is associated with the sea, and the Hebrew word for Leviathan is now used for whales in Modern Hebrew, which may be why Kyogre's appearance also draws inspiration from cetaceans, primarily toothed whales. However, Leviathan does not resemble Kyogre in traditional depictions.
The patterns on Kyogre and Primal Kyogre's fins appear similar to the first letter of Greek alphabet, alpha, which might signify the origin of life, believed to have started in the oceans. It might also signify the opposition to Groudon's omega.
Name origin
Kyogre is a combination of 海 kai (sea) or 海王 kaiō (king of the sea) and ogre.[11] It may also involve orca (killer whale).
↑Zinnia: "That was when, as if drawn by the brilliance, a Pokémon that shone in a blazing emerald hue descended from the heavens... That Pokémon was none other than Rayquaza. Rayquaza's power overwhelmed that of the two Primal Pokémon, and peace returned to the world." (Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire)
↑Steven Stone: "The super-ancient Pokémon that has been sealed deep beneath Route 128 since ancient times... It slept until now in the Seafloor Cavern. The entrance to that cavern was sealed by the power of a certain Pokémon, all in an effort to keep any human or Pokémon from ever breaching it." (Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire)
↑Zinnia: "Thousands of years ago, in the primal age long lost, the world was overflowing with natural energy. Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre fought over that energy in endless, furious clashes." (Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire)
↑Maxie: "The "beginning" that Primal Kyogre brings about... The way that it resets the world... It starts by driving every living thing on this planet to death first! This path leads only to an inescapable despair that cannot be withstood. That is all you have brought us. This is what comes of the madness of thinking that you could ever control the super-ancient Pokémon's power! (Pokémon Alpha Sapphire)
↑"PROJECT AZOTH File No. 1 The goal of Project AZOTH is to return the world—return everything—to the beginning. In order to further the project, we must proceed with research on Groudon'sOR/Kyogre'sAS Primal Reversion. Primal Reversion is a potential of PokémonEvolution, a potential different from Mega Evolution. Mega Evolution is made possible by the energy of people and Pokémon. Primal Reversion is made possible by natural energy. In Primal Reversion, GroudonOR/KyogreAS absorbs natural energy into its body, thereby increasing its power dramatically. Both states significantly enhance Pokémon's power: the difference lies in the source of the required energy." (Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire)
↑Devon Corporation scientist: "We believe that, thanks to its mikado organ, Rayquaza can undergo its own Mega Evolution, manifesting sufficient power to repel both Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre." (Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire)
