Scolipede (Japanese: ペンドラー Pendror) is a dual-type Bug/Poison Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

It evolves from Whirlipede starting at level 30. It is the final form of Venipede.

Scolipede can Mega Evolve into Mega Scolipede using the Scolipite. Mega Scolipede was introduced in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Biology

Scolipede is a plump, centipede-like Pokémon that usually stands with the front half of its body raised vertically off the ground. Its segmented body is dark magenta, except for its smooth, dark gray underside. Long, slightly bent horns similar to antennae extend from its head, as well as an identical pair of horns on its rear. Purple bands decorate these horns, and teardrop-shaped rings of the same color mark each body segment, one on each side of its body. It possesses four pairs of short, purple fore-claws on the body segments that make up its neck, which is used to inject poison. The four hind legs are longer, thicker, and spaced farther apart. Each hind limb has curved dark gray bands around the middle.

Scolipede lives in lush forests. It is very aggressive and will not give up until victorious. This Pokémon chases down enemies with great speed and then attacks relentlessly with its horns until it prevails. It catches its prey using the toxic spike claws on its neck. Once the prey becomes immobile, Scolipede slams it into the ground to inject it with its powerful venom. Similarly to its pre-Evolution, Whirlipede, it can curl up into a ball and roll towards its targets. Scolipede and Centiskorch can get into territorial fights, which end with the loser becoming the winner's prey. While sleeping, Scolipede may curl up into a ball shape.

Forms

Scolipede can Mega Evolve into Mega Scolipede.

As Mega Scolipede, its chest has become coated in a thick plate of lavender armor with two small bumps near the bottom; its smaller fore-claws also gain armor, as do its head and forelegs. The armor on the first two of its foreclaws is the largest and most bulbous. Each of the armor plates on its foreclaws, as well as its thighs, are also marked by black circles with bright, magenta, eye-like shapes surrounding them. Mega Scolipede's foreclaws themselves also turn the same shade of magenta. Its horns have grown dramatically, colored with alternating stripes of dark purple and black and tapering into luminous green spikes. Some bands around the segments in its armor, the outline of its underbelly, and its eyes have also become accentuated by this luminous green. Mega Scolipede's tails become fashioned similarly to its antennae, but lack the characteristic green tips.

Its venom is now luminescent, and it has become even more vicious than its original form thanks to the venom altering its mind.

In Emolga the Irresistible!, Bianca accidentally enraged a Scolipede by having her Pignite use Flamethrower on Scolipede when she thought it was the wild Emolga she was after. As such, it attacked Ash, Cilan, and Bianca. The three Trainers soon managed to escape from the angry Megapede Pokémon.

Trivia

Origin

Bulbanews
Bulbanews

Scolipede may be based on a centipede, most likely the Scolopendra gigantea, while its horns resemble that of Scolopendra cingulata. It could also be based on Arthropleura, a prehistoric relative of centipedes that grew to two-and-a-half meters.

Additionally, Scolipede shares some similarities with millipedes, and may also draw inspiration from a red Archispirostreptus gigas, a species of millipede often kept as a pet. It also bears a strong resemblance to Desmoxytes purpurosea, a species of millipede known for its bright pink coloration and toxicity, the latter of which also ties into Scolipede's typing.

Scolipede's equine appearance may be derived from a pun on the Japanese word for millipede, 馬陸 yasude; the word contains the kanji 馬, which literally means horse.

Mega Scolipede's coat of armor is reminiscent of that of knights or gladiators. It may reference atavism, as it is implied that Scolipede regains the hard shell that Whirlipede possessed.

Name origin

Scolipede may be a combination of Scolopendra (genus of centipedes) and centipede or millipede.

Pendror may be derived from Scolopendra.
