A signature Ability is an Ability that only one Pokémon, or only one evolutionary family of Pokémon, can have within a generation.
Starting in Pokémon Sword and Shield, most Pokémon not in the regional Pokédex are unusable, causing some Pokémon to apparently gain or lose their signature Abilities based on availability, even if that Ability would otherwise be non-exclusive (for example, Oranguru in Pokémon Sword and Shield is the only Pokémon that can have the Ability Symbiosis since the Flabébé evolutionary family cannot be transferred into the games).
Terminology
Starting in Generation VII, this term has been officially used on the Pokémon.com website. For instance:
- "Lunala's signature Shadow Shield Ability reduces all damage taken by half when it is at full HP [...]"[1]
- "[...] Coalossal, whose signature Ability Steam Engine boosts Coalossal's Speed through the roof when it’s hit by a Water- or Fire-type attack."[2]
- "Tatsugiri's signature Ability, Commander, activates when the two Pokémon are on the field at the same time, [...]"[3]

Trivia
- Every Ability introduced in Generation VIII is a signature Ability.
- While technically not signature Abilities by definition, some Abilities are exclusive to certain groups of Pokémon:
- The Ability Beast Boost is exclusive to Ultra Beasts.
- The Ability Protosynthesis is exclusive to ancient Paradox Pokémon.
- The Ability Quark Drive is exclusive to future Paradox Pokémon.
- The Ability Toxic Chain is exclusive to the Loyal Three.
