Penny (Japanese: ボタン Botan) is a character in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

In the core series games

Penny is a student at Naranja AcademyS/Uva AcademyV, and is in the same grade as the player character. She has a shy personality, and is often absent from class. She always has her fluffy Eevee backpack with her wherever she goes. She possesses unparalleled skill with machines and computers. She is enrolled in the STEM track of the academy, with her homeroom teacher being Tyme.

★ Starfall Street ★

Her secret identity is Cassiopeia, the "big boss" of Team Star; none of the other members of Team Star know of her true identity because she never left her room during her time with them. She witnesses the player defeat two Team Star Grunts in front of the school stairs who, ironically, were harassing her to join Team Star, and comes up with the idea of Operation Starfall. Afraid that her fellow bosses will be expelled from the academy because of their involvement in the team but unable to forcibly disband the group herself, she recruits the player into Operation Starfall to make them stand down. After each squad boss except for the last one is defeated, Penny appears as "Cassiopeia's supply unit rep" and talks to the player, giving them TM Materials, and being licked by KoraidonS/MiraidonV every time after the first.

After the player has defeated all five squad bosses, Cassiopeia reveals that she was Team Star's "big boss" and invites the player to meet at the academy's schoolyard after dark, where she reveals her identity as Penny. Penny challenges the player to a battle and asks Clive to record the battle with his Rotom Phone for the squad bosses to view the outcome. After being defeated, Penny proclaims with relief that Team Star's reign is over.

A flashback after her defeat shows her last conversation (a year and a half prior) with the squad bosses, via a Rotom Phone call. The squad bosses were worried about Penny's well-being and her sudden desire to disband Team Star and take sole responsibility for her actions. She thanked the squad bosses for their kindness and company. Penny was then revealed to be outside the room the squad bosses were in during their conversation, and she bid them farewell and temporarily left for Galar, her original home region.

After the flashback, Penny thanks the player and Clive for successfully helping her during Operation Starfall. When asked by Clive why she couldn’t forcibly disband Team Star on her own, Penny explains that the strict code she and the squad bosses created stated that no member of Team Star had the right to order anyone around and that the squad bosses had to accept challenges and give away their Star Badges when defeated, hence forcing them to step down as squad bosses. When asked by Clive what the squad bosses mean to her, Penny wholeheartedly replies that they are her "greatest treasure".

Seemingly touched by Penny's story, Clive thanks her for her appraisal of the situation with Team Star. Clive proceeds to reveal that he, too, was under a false persona, and is actually the Academy's director, Clavell, much to Penny's shock. Clavell explains that he disguised as Clive in order to talk to the Team Star members on equal terms, without them feeling the pressure of speaking to a faculty member such as the academy's director.

Clavell proceeds to call all the squad bosses (Giacomo, Mela, Atticus, Ortega, and Eri) out onto the schoolyard, much to Penny's surprise, and she emotionally recalls their names as they greet her with equal emotion. The squad bosses perform Team Star's signature hasta la vistar ★ pose and happily exclaim in unison: "Hasta la vistar, Cassiopeia! ★ And hello, Penny!"

Clavell apologises to Team Star for his unawareness of the bullying they suffered from, since he joined the academy as its director without witnessing any incidents of bullying. He declares that Team Star may continue to exist should its bosses want it to, but that they should be punished for breaking multiple school rules during their period of truancy. As punishment, Clavell assigns Penny and the squad bosses to manage the newly founded Star Training Centers (STCs) as staff members. Upon hearing this, the squad bosses marvel over Team Star not disbanding and being able to spend time with their "big boss" and close friend at the Academy and STCs.

Clavell dismisses Team Star's bosses and calls the player to his office to thank them for allowing him to help resolve Team Star's situation. Penny arrives shortly thereafter to apologise for illegally hacking the Pokémon League's LP management system to reward the player and Clavell for helping her during Operation Starfall, and feels that she should be punished more heavily than the others. Clavell decides that he should consult Geeta, the Paldea Pokémon League's chairwoman, on the matter, and dismisses the player from his office.

Penny calls the player via Rotom Phone the next time they exit the academy building and tells them to meet her in front of the school stairs, where she was first encountered. She also states that she no longer wishes to be known as Cassiopeia, if the player chose to call her that instead of her actual name.

When the player finds Penny in front of the school stairs, she explains how the squad bosses and her came up with the hasta la vistar ★ catchphrase. She also explains that she won't be badly punished for hacking the Pokémon League's LP management system if she does some volunteer engineering for them, which she agreed to do. Finally, she thanks the player for helping her save Team Star from being wrongfully expelled from the academy and gives them TM169 (Draco Meteor) as a reward. She explains that she wants to repay the player and would be willing to help with any requests they may have. She bids the player farewell with a hasta la vistar ★ and runs up the stairs, concluding the ★ Starfall Street ★ storyline.

After all three main stories of the game have been completed, Penny goes to the Zero Gate with the player, Arven, and Nemona to traverse Area Zero with them and help them reach the Zero Lab in The Way Home, the game's final story. She battles alongside the player as a Multi Battle partner twice during this. After the door to the Zero Lab is opened, a group of Paradox Pokémon escape, which are chased down by Penny and Nemona. Later, Penny returns to the Zero Lab with Nemona and Arven and watches the player battle against and defeat AI SadaS/AI TuroV with their KoraidonS/MiraidonV.

Post-game

While Penny does not appear as an opponent in the first Academy Ace Tournament, she can be battled as a random opponent in subsequent Academy Ace Tournaments, this time using Pokémon Trainer as her Trainer class instead of Team Star.

Outside NaranjaS/UvaV Academy

"... ... ..."
"...Not really."
"Um... I'd rather not..."
  • After the Team Star grunts are defeated
"Um...'scuse me!"
"I...uh... I just... Well, thanks. So, yeah... See you around."

After the first Team Star boss is defeated

"H-hello... I'm Penny...from the supply unit. You probably don't remember, but you got me out of a tight spot by the school stairs..."
I was glad to help!: "Oh! So you do remember..."
Did I...?: "That figures. I never leave an impression on people..."
"But, um. I'm helping out with Operation Starfall as part of my independent study... You know, the Treasure Hunt. I'm good with machines and hacking and stuff, so I'll be working behind the scenes. So...here you go. Your bonus reward from Cassiopeia."
"You should be able to make a ton of TMs with those. And Cassiopeia said you'll get more rewards each time you take out one of Team Star's bases. Also, um...I heard all about how you had your Pokémon charge into battle. Seems you were pretty amazing. With a Trainer as strong as you on our side, I'm sure the operation will go just fine. There's four more squad bosses left, so, um...good luck..."

After the second Team Star boss is defeated

"H-hello! It's me again, from the supply unit..."
"Wah! What the heck—?!"
"Hey, stop that!"
"S-somebody heeelp!!!"
"Blech... It drooled all over me. What even IS that Pokémon anyway?"
It's really awesome!: "Errr, I guess that's one word for it... Wait, is it really that special?"
I have no idea what it is: "Huh? I'm amazed you're so calm with a giant question mark of a Pokémon at your side..."
"Ah, um, but before I forget... Here's your reward."
"Um...your name's <player>, right? Since you're part of Operation Starfall's battle unit, can I ask you something? What do you think of Team Star?"
Regardless of choice: "Interesting..."
"You know, some of the rumors say Team Star wasn't always a bunch of delinquents. Most of them used to be victims of bullying, or they just found it hard to interact with people... But then these misfits and outsiders found each other and banded together to form Team Star. All they wanted to do was push back against the bullies they couldn't face alone... But, uh, that's just info I got by hacking other students' social media accounts. I also found talk about some secret mastermind behind the five bosses—someone who recruited them to the team in the first place... Hm. I don't normally talk this much. Now my throat kinda hurts... So, um, good luck—with taking down the other bases and stuff."

After the third Team Star boss is defeated

"H-hey there, <player>... That, uh...sounded like a pretty serious phone call."
"Uwagh! I wasn't talking to you!"
"Aaarrrggghhh!"
"So, that mastermind you were talking about... Cassiopeia's mentioned them to me, too. Team Star's founder... The person who's caused all kinds of misery at the academy... If we don't take them down, I'll lose what I treasure most in the world."
Regardless of choice: "Ah, no—I just... Um...that's right! You need your reward! Here—take it before I forget."
"All right, well, I'll be off, then..."
"Oh, and <player>...? Don't lose to those guys."

After the fourth Team Star boss is defeated

"Um...here I am..."
"Gwah! Stay in your Poké Ball for once, will you!"
"Aaarrrggghhh!!!"
"Wow... Team Star went through all that, huh. They just wanted the bullies to go away, but then they became the bad guys in everyone's eyes... What a joke. The students, the teachers—they're all so messed up. If even just one of them had been paying attention when everyone was getting bullied...they'd have been able to tell right away that Team Star wasn't the one in the wrong. But I guess the big boss was the one who urged everybody to face their bullies despite knowing how messed up the academy is. What a massive idiot, creating Team Star and just hoping their plan would miraculously work out."
Regardless of choice: "I'm sure of it. Well, here's your reward."
"The next boss is the very last one. We're counting on you, <player>..."

NaranjaS/UvaV Academy schoolyard

"<player>..."
"Thanks for coming."
"Heh. This must be quite a shock for you. The big boss... Cassiopeia... They were both me all along. When I saw you make quick work of those Team Star lackeys outside school that time, the idea for Operation Starfall suddenly came to me. My skills let me get hold of as much LP as I want, so I decided to use that to tempt you to helping me out. After the operation started, I kept an eye on you as a member of the "supply unit"... And I had you battle the bosses on my behalf. All for the goal of defeating me and putting an end to Team Star once and for all. But still...there's a part of me that wants Team Star to live on! I can't just roll over and let you win without putting up a fight! This is the final showdown. Are you ready?"
I'm ready: "Thanks."
"That voice... Are you Clive?"
"In the flesh. I've a task for you, Clive, if you'll accept it."
"I want you to record what happens next so I can send the video to Team Star. They need to see the outcome of this battle for themselves."
  • Before battle
"Then allow me to introduce myself properly..."
"I'm the big boss of Team Star. The name's Cassiopeia—"
"No...Penny!"
"Now, bow down before the overwhelming might of Team Star's founder!"
  • In battle
"I won't hold back in this battle! I'll stay true to Team Star's code!"
When sending out her last Pokémon: "I can't fault you on your battle skills at all. No wonder the bosses fell at your hands."
Upon Terastallizing her Sylveon: "Time to Terastallize! Shine bright like the starry sky and become who you really want to be!"
Upon using Sylveon's Moonblast: "My Veevee power will crush you into stardust!"
Upon being defeated: "...It's all over now."

  • Penny's Student ID at the Academy is 803B121.
  • Penny's home is in the Galar region.[1]
  • All of Penny’s Pokémon are Eeveelutions. This makes her the first and only notable Trainer in the games to have a full team of six Eeveelutions.
  • Penny considers her family to be "unbelievably annoying". She refers to her dad, who gives her nicknames such as "Pen-pen", as "loud and clingy" and "the most annoying guy in the world". In this aspect, she is similar to Peonia, who considers her father, Peony, with similar disdain.
  • Penny's dorm room at the academy contains multiple references to different Pokémon species and real-world products, including Nintendo consoles.
    • It contains multiple empty instant food packages, including cup noodles, energy drink cans, and cereal boxes.
    • There is a shelf filled with magazines, three of which have covers picturing the Game Boy, the Nintendo GameCube, and what appears to be a Nintendo DS Lite.
