Jolteon is a quadrupedal, mammalianPokémon. It is covered in yellow fur with a spiky fringe around its tail and a white ruff around its neck. Its ears are large and pointed with black interiors, and its eyes and small nose are black. It has slender legs and small paws, each with three toes and a pink paw-pad.
Jolteon's lungs contain an organ that produces electrical energy, causing a crackling sound to be heard when it exhales. When angered or startled, it bristles its fur in battle, causing each strand to stiffen into sharp, needle-like quills that can pierce enemies. It then finishes them off by blasting wicked 10,000-volt thunderbolts, which are generated either by gathering negative ions from the atmosphere or by concentrating the weak electrical charge emitted by its cells. This charge is amplified by the static electricity within its fur, which consists of electrically charged needles. When Jolteon becomes energized, these needles stand on end and harden, signaling that it is about to unleash its power. The charge is so potent that shed quills can retain electricity for a long time. Jolteon's fur also produces a constant sparking noise due to the negative ions it generates. Additionally, when agitated, it can straighten and fire small numbers of these electrically charged quills like a missile barrage. Lightning is known to sometimes strike next to this Pokémon. Jolteon is quite sensitive and easily feels sad or angry, so it charges power whenever its mood changes. Because of its high-strung nature, it can be difficult for Pokémon Trainers to grow close to it. It is most often found in cities and towns under the ownership of Trainers. As mentioned in Pokémon Sleep, the crackling sound of electricity can be heard while Jolteon exhales during its slumber.[1]
It concentrates the weak electric charges emitted by its cells and launches wicked lightning bolts. (Pokémon Red, Silver, or Crystal inserted) Every hair on its body starts to stand sharply on end if it becomes charged with electricity. (Pokémon Blue, Gold, or Yellow inserted)
Jolteon's cells generate a low level of electricity. This power is amplified by the static electricity of its fur, enabling the Pokémon to drop thunderbolts. The bristling fur is made of electrically charged needles.

Jolteon can charge every hair on its body with electricity. The charge is so powerful that even if Jolteon sheds its fur, the hairs can stay electrically charged a long time!

If you quietly approach a sleeping Jolteon, you can hear the crackling sound of electricity as it exhales. When its fur stands on end, that's a sign it's about to give off a jolt of electricity—so get away quick!
In Eevee & Friends, an affectionate Jolteon was with an Eevee and its other Evolutions, including the newly introduced Sylveon. It tends to shock those it hugs.

Jolteon's and Zapdos's Japanese names are almost exactly identical, with a final ~ス~s being the only difference.
Origin
Similar to most Eeveelutions, Jolteon's overall design shares characteristics with multiple different mammalian species such as dogs, cats, and foxes. Additionally, Jolteon may have been inspired by the raijū, the embodiment of lightning into animal form in Japanese mythology.
Jolteon's extremely high speed may draw inspiration specifically from cheetahs, known for being the fastest land animal. Alternatively, it may reference the idiom "lightning fast" and similar variants, or even the equivalent Japanese idiom 「電光石火」.
Jolteon's spiked fur may draw inspiration from the sharp corners of stereotypical cartoon representations of lightning bolts. It may also be based on porcupines, with its ability to launch its hair possibly being inspired by the myth that porcupines are able to shoot out their quills when threatened. Some of its Pokédex entries also mention its hair standing up sharply when charged or angry/scared, likely referencing static electricity effects on hair and the rising of hackles in some animals, respectively.
Name origin
Jolteon may be a combination of jolt and eon (an immeasurably long period of time, possibly referring to how long evolution takes naturally). Eon is a suffix all EeveeEvolutions share and was Eevee's English prototype name.
