Squirtle, the Crybaby Pokémon (Japanese: 泣き虫ポケモンゼニガメ登場 Squirtle, the Crybaby Pokémon) is the forty-seventh chapter of the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga.

Plot

After being kicked out of its house by Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan, a Pokémon falls into a river. Meanwhile, Red, Clefairy, and Pikachu are fishing. The same Pokémon from before falls onto Clefairy's bait, revealing itself to be an injured Squirtle, and Clefairy briefly tries to grill it. Squirtle cries extremely loudly, and Red asks what happened. Squirtle explains that he was adopted by a mysterious trainer as a baby and used to be treated with affection, but everything changed when the trainer began training him for use in Pokémon battles. Squirtle was very weak and he began to be mistreated and abused by the Pokémon in his home, until one day the trainer decided to kick him out. Squirtle is now determined to become strong and prove to its trainer what he is capable of, and says he will embark on a journey to find a Pokémon that has defeated the Elite Four and ask for their help in training. Squirtle was looking for Pikachu, but Clefairy reveals that he defeated the Elite Four and that Red and Pikachu accompanied him. Clefairy offers to help him, and he and Squirtle begin training. Initially, Clefairy demands money, but Red beats him up and makes him give up.

The training begins with a race, followed by Clefairy resting and taking a nap. Red beats Clefairy up again and tells him to take the training seriously; Squirtle asks when they will start the training for real and says he wants to be the strongest Pokémon. Clefairy responds by handing him a punching bag and tells him to hit it as hard as possible. Squirtle hits it, and the bag kicks back, defeating Squirtle. Clefairy yells at him and says that the correct way to hit is to concentrate, launch your body, and spin it with full force to hit the enemy. Squirtle misinterprets the instructions and begins to spin uncontrollably.

Two days have passed since Squirtle began training, growing stronger each day. His final task is to defeat Clefairy in battle. Squirtle slips on a banana peel, sending Clefairy away and defeating him.

Ready for his revenge, Squirtle, accompanied by Red, Clefairy, and Pikachu, returns to his former trainer's house. Upon arriving, it is revealed that Giovanni and his brother where the ones who adopted and trained Squirtle. Squirtle tells them that Clefairy trained him and that he is no longer a crybaby. In response, Giovanni unleashes his team of powerful Pokémon to attack him. Squirtle punches Hitmonchan in the face; surprised, Hitmonchan counterattacks, sending Squirtle flying and beating him several times. Realizing that Squirtle is unable to defeat Hitmonchan, Clefairy interrupts the fight, puts on Squirtle's shell, and disguises himself as his cousin. The disguise doesn't work, and all of Giovanni's Pokémon go after and beat Clefairy, damaging Squirtle's shell. Squirtle is furious about the state of its shell, and Hitmonlee makes fun of him for it.

Squirtle becomes extremely offended and starts crying uncontrollably. Giovanni gets desperate and warns that things will get ugly if Squirtle doesn't stop crying. With the house flooded with tears, Clefairy hits Squirtle to make him stop crying, which makes it cry even harder and causes everyone to be thrown out the window by the pressure of the water. Clefairy begs him to stop crying or Squirtle will forever be known as a Crybaby Pokémon. Squirtle doesn't care anymore and accepts his fate, continuing to cry, leading Clefairy to conclude that it is both the strongest and weakest Pokémon.
