Now that all the post-game story is complete, it’s time to head back to Wyndon Stadium. We have the option to re-run the Champion Cup as many times as desired, with a little twist. You will be given the choice by the attendant at the reception desk to invite any trainer whose rare League Card you have obtained (excluding Opal, who must be making the most of her retirement). Conveniently, we spent the last chapter mopping up some loose ends, so we now have the full collection, meaning you can invite any Gym Leader or rival to participate.
The tournament itself is an eight person bracket, meaning you’ll need to win three rounds to emerge victorious again. Your opponents will be a selection of Gym Leaders and Gym Challengers, randomly chosen, including an invited opponent. Of note is that there’s no guarantee you’ll end up fighting your invitee, as they may well be knocked out of the tournament before you have a chance to face them.
Gym Challengers
All the Gym Challengers are type specialists (although not necessarily the same types as the Gym Leaders), and as you are shown who you’ll face before the fight starts you can pick your lead Pokémon accordingly based on the matchup. The Gym Challengers are at a lower level than the Gym Leaders, so you should outlevel them, and they do not Dynamax any of their Pokémon.
As you might expect, the Gym Leaders are all of a higher level than the Gym Challengers. They also all carry a Pokémon that will Gigantamax on its first turn in battle - Piers is the lone exception to this. Again, as you can see who your opponent will be before you take them on, you can adjust your team appropriately to ensure a favorable matchup. Your team is fully healed in between each fight as well, to help cut down on preparation time.
With the right type matchups and a significant level advantage, these fights shouldn’t pose a great deal of problems, especially as you can plan in advance. You also have the benefit of being able to carry six Pokémon, while all your opponents carry five, and can Dynamax early in the battle to set up stat boosts or weather and terrain to tilt things further in your favor and start sweeping early. Factor in the ability to use items as frequently as you like as well, and you should be set up for success.
Ball Guy will appear after you win the tournament to give you a reward. This will always be a Wishing Piece for your first win each day, and is decided randomly for any subsequent victories.
With the Champion Cup rematches available to take on as frequently as you like, it’s a solid way to train your Pokémon and bolster your bank account (especially with an Amulet Coin equipped).
This wraps up the quests available in the main game, but there’s still the Isle of Armor storyline to finish, before heading into the Crown Tundra.
