A Pokémon Ranger (written as "PKMN Ranger" in-game prior to Generation VI; Japanese: ポケモンレンジャー Pokémon Ranger) is a type of Pokémon Trainer that debuted in the Generation III games. They come in male and female variations, dress in sturdy orange and black clothing, and carry a length of rope. Two Pokémon Rangers, one male and female, who battle together in Double Battles are called Rangers.

Unlike the Rangers of the Pokémon Ranger series, Rangers appearing in core series games collect and train Pokémon just like other regular Pokémon Trainers. However, they are still primarily concerned with protecting wild Pokémon, keeping the environment safe, and making sure travelers do not get injured or lost when walking through the wilderness, as they mention in their battle dialogue.

They specialize in Grass-type Pokémon in Generation III and they often have healing items. In Generation IV onward, they use a variety of powerful Pokémon, similar to Ace Trainers.

In Pokémon Black and White and Black 2 and White 2, they give out Berries when defeated, unless if they are encountered in the Big Stadium or Small Court, where they instead give out Max Repels.

In Regaining the Home Advantage!, Crispin guards a mountain where powerful Metagross and Magnezone lived and regularly did battle.

In Kalos, Keaton looks after a forest located somewhere near Geosenge Town in The Forest Champion!; and Keanan is the caretaker of a swamp located between Lumiose City and Laverre City that is the original home of Ash's Goodra.

In The Power of Us, two Rangers encountered Risa, who was looking for an Eevee near a mountain that had been off-limits for decades. They warned her to leave the area because of Zeraora's curse.

A Pokémon Ranger in Be the Best! Pokémon B+W

A Pokémon Ranger appeared in The Battle for More Friends!, where he battled Monta. Monta spotted him and challenged him to a battle. He sent out his Zebstrika and Swanna against Monta's newly caught Emolga and Snivy. Despite the strength of his Pokémon and his knowledge of Abilities, he underestimated Monta's Pokémon as they were able to knock out his Pokémon with one hit.

Pokémon

Zebstrika
Pokémon Ranger's Zebstrika

A Pokémon Ranger's Zebstrika was first seen with Swanna in a battle against Monta's Snivy and Emolga. Emolga goes in with an Electro Ball attack on Swanna but suddenly the attack misses and Zebstrika is hit instead. The Ranger explains that Zebstrika's Lightningrod Ability pulls electric attacks towards it instead. Excadrill uses Dig near it but the Ranger takes no notice, revealing that Zebstrika is strong enough to take Excadrill's Dig. However, he underestimates Monta when the Dig hits and knocks it out with one hit.

Monta explains that using Excadrill's Ability Sand Force, which raises its attacks and doubles the power of the Dig, it was able to defeat it.

None of Zebstrika's moves are known, and its Ability is Lightningrod.

Swanna
Pokémon Ranger's Swanna

A Pokémon Ranger's Swanna was first seen with Zebstrika in a battle against Monta's Snivy and Emolga. Emolga goes in with an Electro Ball attack on Swanna but suddenly the attack misses and Zebstrika is hit instead. The Ranger explains that Zebstrika's Lightningrod Ability pulls electric attacks towards it instead. It goes in for an Aerial Ace which hits Snivy and does loads of damage. It then attacks Emolga with a Bubble Beam which does some damage. It is later defeated by Emolga's Shock Wave giving Monta the win.

Swanna's known moves are Aerial Ace and Bubble Beam.
