Fling (Japanese: なげつける Throw) is a damage-dealing Dark-type move introduced in Generation IV. It has been TM56 since Generation IV.

Effect

This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason: Power of flinging missing items: Ability Capsule, Big Malasada, Bottle Cap, Discount Coupon, Festival Ticket, Gold Bottle Cap, Ice Stone, Lumiose Galette, Pink Nectar, Purple Nectar, Red Nectar, Sachet, Shalour Sable, Strange Souvenir, Wipped Dream and Yellow Nectar
You can discuss this on the talk page.

The power of Fling is determined by the held item. The move will fail if the user has no held item, or if the item is not one listed below. After using Fling, the item is consumed, even if the target has protected themselves with a move like Protect or Detect.

The power of Fling is calculated as:

Power Items
10 All Berries, all Incenses, all Scarves, Air Balloon, Big Root, Bright Powder, Choice Band, Choice Scarf, Choice Specs, Destiny Knot, Electric Seed, Expert Belt, Focus Band, Focus Sash, Grassy Seed, Lagging Tail, Leftovers, Mental Herb, Metal Powder, Misty Seed, Muscle Band, Power Herb, Psychic Seed, Quick Powder, Reaper Cloth, Red Card, Ring Target, Shed Shell, Silk Scarf, Silver Powder, Smooth Rock, Soft Sand, Soothe Bell, White Herb, Wide Lens, Wise Glasses, Zoom Lens
20 All Wings
30 All medicines, all Potions, all herbal medicine, all Revives, all drinks, all Ethers and Elixirs, all Repels, all Vitamins, all Shards, all Mulches, all battle items, all Flutes, Absorb Bulb, Adrenaline Orb, Amulet Coin, Balm Mushroom, Big Mushroom, Big Nugget, Big Pearl, Binding Band, Black Belt, Black Glasses, Black Sludge, Casteliacone, Cell Battery, Charcoal, Cleanse Tag, Comet Shard, Deep Sea Scale, Dragon Scale, Eject Button, Escape Rope, Everstone, Exp. Share, Fire Stone, Flame Orb, Float Stone, Fluffy Tail, Heart Scale, Honey, King's Rock, Lava Cookie, Leaf Stone, Life Orb, Light Ball, Light Clay, Lucky Egg, Luminous Moss, Magnet, Metal Coat, Metronome, Miracle Seed, Moon Stone, Mystic Water, Never-Melt Ice, Nugget, Old Gateau, Pass Orb, Pearl String, Pearl, Poké Doll, Poké Toy, Prism Scale, Razor Fang, Relic Band, Relic Copper, Relic Crown, Relic Gold, Relic Silver, Relic Statue, Relic Vase, Sacred Ash, Scope Lens, Shell Bell, Shoal Salt, Shoal Shell, Smoke Ball, Snowball, Soul Dew, Spell Tag, Star Piece, Stardust, Sun Stone, Sweet Heart, Thunder Stone, Tiny Mushroom, Toxic Orb, Twisted Spoon, Up-Grade, Water Stone
40 Eviolite, Icy Rock, Lucky Punch
50 All Memories, Dubious Disc, Sharp Beak
60 Adamant Orb, Damp Rock, Griseous Orb, Heat Rock, Lustrous Orb, Macho Brace, Rocky Helmet, Stick, Terrain Extender
70 All Drives, Dragon Fang, Poison Barb, Power Anklet, Power Band, Power Belt, Power Bracer, Power Lens, Power Weight
80 All Mega Stones, Assault Vest, Dawn Stone, Dusk Stone, Electirizer, Magmarizer, Odd Keystone, Oval Stone, Protective Pads, Protector, Quick Claw, Razor Claw, Safety Goggles, Shiny Stone, Sticky Barb, Weakness Policy
90 All Plates, Deep Sea Tooth, Grip Claw, Thick Club
100 All Fossils, Hard Stone, Rare Bone
130 Iron Ball

Black Glasses, Dread Plate, Muscle Band, and Choice Band boost the power of Fling. Expert Belt boosts the power of Fling if the attack is super effective. Life Orb boosts the power of Fling but does not reduce the user's HP. If the user hits its opponent with a Berry, the effect of the Berry will be activated. Additionally, some items will cause other effects when used with Fling:

Item Effect Power
Flame Orb Burns the target 30
King's Rock Causes the target to flinch 30
Light Ball Paralyzes the target 30
Mental Herb Cures the effects of infatuation, Taunt, Encore, Torment, Disable, and Cursed Body* from the target 10
Poison Barb Poisons the target 70
Razor Fang Causes the target to flinch 30
Toxic Orb Badly poisons the target 30
White Herb Restores lowered stats of the target 10

Fling will fail if used by an Arceus holding a Plate, a Giratina holding the Griseous Orb, a Genesect holding a Drive or a Silvally holding a Memory, though none of them can normally have this move. Fling will fail if used by a Pokémon holding a Mega Stone that can Mega Evolve the holder. It will also fail if the Pokémon is holding any type of Gem, Z-Crystal, Poké Ball, Mail, or the Red Orb or Blue Orb. Embargo, Klutz, Magic Room, Knock Off, and Unnerve (if the Pokémon is holding a Berry) all prevent the usage of Fling.

Fling can also be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, with the user gaining an extra three appeal points if a certain move (Celebrate, Covet, Happy Hour or Wish) was used in the prior turn.

Trivia

  • Fling, along with Fake Out, are the only moves that have a 100% chance of causing flinching, though a King's Rock or Razor Fang must be flung in order to cause flinching.
  • Fling will fail if the user is holding a Poké Ball or any variant. This is probably to prevent confusion should a flung Poké Ball hit a wild Pokémon and do damage rather than try to catch it.
  • Fling is the only Dark-type move able to cause paralysis, burn, or poisoning.
  • In the anime, Fling can also be used to throw the remains of attacks, such as when Bianca's Emboar flung the remains of Trip's Conkeldurr's Stone Edge at it. It can also be used to throw the opponent.
