Froslass is a regal, humanoid Pokémon with a hollow torso that resembles a kimono. It wears a red band around its waist, reminiscent of an obi. Its body lacks feet and it floats in the air like its counterpart, Glalie. Its arms are connected to the sides of its head and flare at the wrists. The flared portion has a dappled light blue coloration. Its hands consist of three small fingers. Froslass's head is shaped similar to a sideways water droplet and is topped with two ice crystals that resemble horns. Its head has several holes on it, resembling a mask. Through two of these holes, crystal blue eyes with yellow sclerae can be seen. It also has a mouth below this "mask".
Froslass lives in snowy caverns and has the ability to freeze foes with its −58 degrees Fahrenheit breath. It preys on frozen souls and is particularly fond of the souls of men. While it enjoys hunting for handsome men climbing in the mountains, it has also been known to freeze Pokémon to turn them into decorations. Froslass is known to bring its frozen victims back to the cave it lives in before lining them up neatly. It also goes down to human homes to knock on doors during nights of cold blizzards. There is a legend that Froslass will place curses on any men that misbehave. It possesses a range of spectral powers and can create illusions to manipulate others, as depicted in the Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl episode The Drifting Snorunt!. Froslass is a female-only species and is said in legends to have been formed when the spirit and lingering regrets of a woman who was lost in the mountains possessed an icicle.
Mega Froslass's body generally doubles in size, becoming taller in height and its horns growing longer and sharper. Its kimono-like torso now flows all the way down and has become layered in appearance, the bottom layers being purple and light blue. It has multiple ice crystals growing from the bottom of its body, some of which cluster together to form a snowflake shape. The white mask-like part of its head extends further behind its body, resembling long hair. Its eyes and the eye holes in its "mask" also become smaller and diamond-shaped, along with its pupils becoming significantly smaller and thinner. Mega Froslass does not levitate freely, but rather floats on top of a flat mass of cloud that emanates from the bottom of its kimono, the cloud itself barely not touching the ground.
Mega Froslass's ability to manipulate ice and freeze objects has increased substantially; it can use cold air infused with spectral energy to freeze things that are intangible, such as wind or flames. Mega Froslass can create large icicles to hit foes or form ice pillars. It can also teleport by disappearing into the shadows.
A Pokémon inhabited by the soul of a woman who died bearing a grudge in the snowy mountains. Legends of Froslass placing deathly curses on misbehaving men send shivers down my spine.
Froslass has a habit of freezing things it likes and displaying them as decorations. Seeing the pieces of the ruins it had on display, I’d say Froslass and I are kindred spirits!
Froslass made her television debut in Pikachu's Ice Adventure, where she was fighting with an Abomasnow before they realized their quarrel was destroying several ice statues.
In a flashback in This Magik Moment!, a Froslass fought an Abomasnow. Their clash triggered a blizzard that prevented a plane carrying three Pokémon stars from arriving at Alola.
Due to the censor that prevents Pokémon with offensive nicknames being traded on the GTS, an English language Froslass could not be traded on the GTS without a nickname in Pokémon Black and White.
Froslass's Pokédex entry in Pokémon SoulSilver has a typo where the period at the end of the sentence is missing. This error does not occur in Pokémon HeartGold.
Froslass and its evolutionary relatives are the only Ice-type Pokémon in the Fairy Egg Group.
Froslass is also the only Ghost-type Pokémon in the Fairy Egg Group.
Froslass is the only Pokémon within its evolutionary line that does not possess two standard Abilities.
Origin
Froslass is most likely based on Yuki-onna, a female ice-spirit of Japanese folklore. Its body shape also resembles a kokeshi doll. Due to its red sash, it appears to be wearing a kimono.
Mega Froslass's taller, more regal design may be influenced from the Western fairy-tale The Snow Queen. It might be also based on Takaonna, a female tall-spirit of Japanese folklore. Its elongated horns resemble those of an oni.
Name origin
Froslass may be a combination of frost and lass.
Yukimenoko may be a combination of 雪 yuki (snow), 雪女 yuki-onna (snow woman), and 女の子 menoko (archaic word for girl).
