Regirock (Japanese: レジロック Regirock) is a Rock-type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

It is a member of the legendary giants along with Regice, Registeel, Regieleki, and Regidrago.

Biology

Regirock is a large golem-like Pokémon made of brown and orange rocks, granting it a durable physique. It has a pattern of seven orange dots on its face that resembles a capital letter "H". It has long arms with jutting shoulders and club-like hands without fingers. There is a line of orange rocky spines running down its back, and its legs are short in comparison to its body.

According to legend, Regirock was created by the Legendary Pokémon Regigigas using rocks. It used to be worshipped by humans, however, at some point, ancient people started fearing its power and sealed it away. In Hoenn, it was sealed in the Desert Ruins; in Sinnoh, it was sealed in the Rock Peak Ruins; and in Galar, it was sealed in the Rock Peak Ruins. When it gets damaged in battle, it will search for new rocks to repair itself. Because of this, the rocks it is made of come from several different places around the world, which contributes to Regirock's patchwork appearance. Recently, cutting-edge technology has found that Regirock is entirely made of stone and rock; not even a heart or a brain was found.

Main article: Brandon's Regirock

Regirock debuted in The Beginning of the End with Kyogre & Groudon XIV, when Sidney attempted to open the Desert Ruins. Together, Steven and Sapphire created a team consisting of four Beldum and Sapphire's Relicanth and Wailord, thus opening up the chamber containing Regirock, as well as the other two giants, Registeel and Regice. Regirock used Superpower to stop Groudon and Kyogre from spreading destruction. After the battle, it and the other two giants—left weak and powerless—traveled to the mountains, where they were later caught by Brandon shortly before the opening ceremony of the Battle Frontier.

Regirock was Brandon's first Pokémon during his battle with Emerald, where it found Sceptile's Leech Seed attack to be of minor annoyance and knocked it out right away with its Explosion attack. However, while the Pyramid King's attention was focused on Jirachi's light coming from the horizon, Emerald was able to revitalize the fainted Sceptile with a Revive and win the battle.

In Rrmbll!! Serious Tower Battle, Hop, Marnie, and Bede were revealed to have caught a Regirock at the Crown Tundra during one of their expeditions as part of Peony's expedition team.

Trivia

  • In the international versions of Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, there is an unobtainable Regirock Doll programmed into the game. It was unlockable with the Japan-exclusive Regi-Dolls Decoration set e-Reader card.
  • Regirock's in-game footprint resembles a Scarabaeus sacer, a real-life insect that was considered sacred by ancient Egyptians.
  • Regirock's base Attack and Special Attack, as well as Defense and Special Defense, are reverse of Regice's.
  • Regirock is the first Legendary Pokémon to have been featured as a caught Pokémon in the animated series.

Origin

Regirock may be based on the golems of Hebrew legend. The legends cast them as servants of higher powers and are said to have writing on their heads. When the writing is removed, the creature would be weakened, or even killed in some legends. Regirock's face that consists of seven dots may be based on Braille alphabet which was necessary to use to encounter the legendary giants for the first time in Sealed Chamber.

The five legendary giants may be collectively themed after historical epochs, with Regirock representing the Stone Age.

Name origin

Regirock may be a combination of regis (Latin for royal) and rock.
