Mary debuts in the Gold, Silver & Crystal arc. She is a radio show host at the Goldenrod Radio Tower as well as a singer known for the song "Boy and his Lapras". Mary is first seen hosting a radio show when Gold, a fan of hers, bursts into the recording session. Gold reveals that Mary's Smeargle, Smea-Smea, painted his face earlier and wishes to have his revenge on it. Gold's anger leads into an argument with Whitney, who was the one who gave Smea-Smea to Mary in the first place. After the argument gets good ratings for the show, the Radio Director, Hirō, decides to market it by organizing a race with Gold and Whitney as the competitors. Although confused at the whole situation, Mary acts as one of the hosts covering the event.
Later, Mary joins Whitney, Hirō, and the Pokémon Association Chairman in traveling to the Mahogany Gym in order to warn Pryce of Suicune, which had been challenging all of the Gym Leaders in Johto.
At the Indigo Plateau, Mary appears as one of hosts of the Pokémon League. She gets caught up in the Masked Man's attack of the League with his army of mind controlled Rocket Grunts. With Smea-Smea's Fire-type attacks that it copied from Entei, Mary helps stop one of the Masked Man's ice dolls permanently. After the Masked Man was defeated, Mary returned to her life as a radio show host.
In the Emerald arc, Mary appears as one of the people that came to visit the Battle Frontier as a result of Scott wishing on Jirachi.
In the HeartGold & SoulSilver arc, Mary appears as a commentator at the Pokéathlon. There, she meets with Gold again, who had come to compete.

It first appeared pranking Gold while he was sleeping by using its tail to draw over his face. Gold chased after Smea-Smea all the way to Goldenrod's Radio Tower, where he found out that it belonged to Whitney and DJ Mary. Smea-Smea appeared again along with Mary while Whitney was battling against Pryce's Suicune ice sculpture. During the final battle against the Masked Man, Smea-Smea was seen mimicking Entei's flames via its Sketch, making it capable of permanently melting the Masked Man's re-freezing ice. In the ninth chapter, Smea-Smea was revealed to have been returned to Whitney.
