Mewtwo (Japanese: ミュウツー Mewtwo) is a Psychic-type legendary Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve to or from any other Pokémon.

It is one of the most famous legendary Pokémon, being the subject of the the very first Pokémon movie, a later special that continues its story, and as a fighter in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Contents

Biology

Mewtwo is one of the first Pokémon created by science. The scientists who created it dreamed of making the strongest Pokémon ever.

Physiology

Mewtwo is a creature with a humanoid posture, but has many feline features. Mewtwo's body is grayish-purple with a purple underside and a long, purple tail. Mewtwo has three digits on each appendage. It has purple eyes and two short ears.

One of Mewtwo's most notable features is the tube extending from the back of its skull to its spine. It is most likely a secondary spinal cord, or a system of nerves, allowing for an increased amount of blood and sensory transmission to the brain, heightening its psychic powers.

Gender differences

This Pokémon is genderless, and is unique.

Special abilities

Mewtwo is highly skilled with Psychic powers. It can fly through use of telekinesis, speak telepathically, and take control of another living being's mind. Mewtwo is also capable of wielding various types of attacks (but to a slightly lesser extent than Mew).

In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Mewtwo fights with a highly skilled combination of Psywaves and a giant spoon for long range and close range battles, respectively.

Mewtwo also has the ability to telekinetically create massive hurricanes powerful enough to destroy the planet.

Behavior

Mewtwo is very aggressive and thinks of nothing but battling and defeating its foes. Its viciousness results from the repeated recombining of its DNA and the loss of its friend Amber. During the anime special Mewtwo Returns, however, Mewtwo seems to have developed a very protective and guardian-like nature to the point of surrendering to Giovanni just to keep its fellow clones safe.

Habitat

Mewtwo, being a cloned Pokémon, has no natural habitat. However, it has been known to make its hideout in Cerulean Cave's basement. Also, in the anime, Mewtwo has been seen roaming a large city under the cover of night.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

In the games

According to the scientific logs found in the Pokémon Mansion of Cinnabar Island, Mewtwo was born of a pregnant Mew whose embryo had been tampered with and its DNA had been repetitively spliced. It was held and studied in the mansion where the scientists, including Blaine and Dr. Fuji (now known as Mr. Fuji), performed horrific gene-splicing experiments that made it vicious and extremely powerful. It eventually broke free of the Mansion (destroying it in the process) and fled to the Unknown Dungeon. There, the player may capture it after beating the Elite Four. Cerulean Cave collapses three years later, and it leaves the mysterious Berserk Gene in a lake near the collapsed Cerulean Cave (implying that the encounter did happen). However, HeartGold and SoulSilver restored the cave and left Mewtwo in it, proving Red never did catch it.

Major Appearances

Mewtwo (anime)

While Mewtwo has been the Pokémon of focus of two movies, it also made brief appearances in The Battle of the Badge and Showdown at the Poké-Corral in its body armor. The first instance was when Giovanni used it to battle Gary's Arcanine and Nidoking. The second time was when Mewtwo totaled Giovanni's headquarters and flew off. While a scene involving Mewtwo and Giovanni did appear in It's Mr. Mime Time, it wasn't in the movie.

Other

A Mirage Mewtwo appears in The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon and is the most powerful Pokémon controlled by the Mirage Master.

Minor Appearances

Mewtwo appears chasing a Mew during the opening of The Rise of Darkrai.

In the manga

Pokémon Adventures

Mewtwo has a similar origin and personality to the Mewtwo that appeared in the anime. It is a genetically engineered Pokémon created by Blaine for Team Rocket by splicing Mew's DNA with his own. Blaine later defected from Team Rocket and hid himself away, as both he and Mewtwo were suffering from an illness caused by a shared psychic link due to their mutual DNA. Mewtwo went on a rampage and hid itself in the Cerulean Cave, but Red was able to capture him with a Master Ball and return him to Blaine so he could attempt to find a cure for their illness. Blaine and Mewtwo fought against Lance but were defeated when their condition weakened them. The pair were later cured by the flames of Entei whom Blaine had earlier befriended. Later, Blaine left Mewtwo on his own, and the legendary Pokémon only returned when he learned of Giovanni's plans to use Deoxys for nefarious purposes. Mewtwo joined up with Red to attempt to defeat Deoxys and Giovanni.

In Pokémon Get da ze!

Shū's father is portrayed as having been the creator of Mewtwo after a failed five year search for the elusive Mew.

In Magical Pokémon Journey

During the final volume of this manga, Hazel goes to a forest in another dimension to find Mew so it can grant her a wish, and gets trapped by Mewtwo.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Mewtwo in SSBM

Mewtwo is a playable character and is unlocked after a lot of playing in VS. Mode; either after 700 matches or 20 hours of combined play. The time taken is reduced by the number of human players, so Mewtwo can be unlocked after just five hours if four players are playing for the whole time.

Ironically for its legendary status, Mewtwo is considered to be the poorest character when played at the highest metagame. It is easy to knock off the stage due to its large body and light weight. In addition, Mewtwo is slow, does not have any fast defensive options and also has general problems with some of its other moves. This all leads to Mewtwo's position in the bottom tier.

Trophy information

Classic Mode

A genetically created Pokémon, Mewtwo is the result of many long years of research by a solitary scientist. Although Mewtwo was born from the genes of the legendary Pokémon Mew, its size and character are far different than its ancestor. Its battle abilities have been radically heightened, making it ruthless.

Adventure Mode

As Mewtwo relies mostly on its powerful brain, there are times when it scarcely uses its arms and legs. Since Mewtwo spends much of its time floating, it flies far when struck. Shadow Ball traces a jagged path once released: the longer Mewtwo holds it, the more powerful it becomes. Mewtwo uses Confusion to spin its foes around.

All-Star Mode

Mewtwo is definitely not a speedy character, but its ESP-powered grab and throw moves are comparatively strong. Teleport has a short range, but doesn't leave it open to attack. It's best used as an escape move during disturbances. Mewtwo can daze a foe if it makes eye contact and uses Disable; the move is useless unless Mewtwo is facing its enemy.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Mewtwo was cut from the sequel's roster. Internal data features data for seven characters not in the roster; Mewtwo included. It is currently unknown if it will be possible to utilize this data in any way but this does show that Mewtwo was seriously considered for the game as there is the picture for ending classic mode of Mewtwo, and Mewtwo's voice was also found on the disc, but there is a chance that the data for Mewtwo is merely recycled from Melee. Mewtwo does appear as a collectible trophy after clearing All-Star mode on Intense difficulty, however.

Trophy information

A Genetic Pokémon. This legendary Pokémon was based on a recombination of Mew's DNA, created by a scientist after years of research. However, Mewtwo greatly differs from Mew in both size and personality and is said to be the most twisted and savage Pokémon ever. Mewtwo has incredibly high combat abilities and uses Psychic- type attacks.

Merchandise

Mewtwo was one of the first four Pokémon designs revealed when the Pokémon 151 brand was first announced. In the shirt design, two Mewtwo are holding a 150 Crest with a DNA Strand as its Header. On top of it is a crown with a Poké Ball as its Jewel.

Trivia

  • Mewtwo has the second highest Special Attack in the game, surpassed only by the Attack Forme of Deoxys. This makes it the Pokémon with the highest Special Attack if event Pokémon are not counted.
  • Mewtwo was initially the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 590 (increased to 680, due to the Special split, from Generation II onwards), at the time the highest in the game. It was later joined by several other Pokémon, and finally surpassed by Arceus's total of 720.
  • In Pokémon Adventures, shortly after Mewtwo was revealed, ironically, (although no one knew what it was) Red mentioned there being 150 Pokémon, not knowing about Mew. After this, Green contradicted Red, saying there were 151, and most Pokémon Breeders' goals included finding Mew, to whom they referred to as #151, Mew. However, none of these people knew about #150, as it was secretly being created when this was pointed out, so only Team Rocket, Red, and Blue knew about Mewtwo.
  • Mewtwo was the first Pokémon seen in the English dub, as it appears at the very beginning of the first dub opening.
  • In the games, Mew was said to have given live birth to Mewtwo during Generation I. Pokémon were shown to hatch from eggs, however, in the following generation. The statement about Mew giving birth remains in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.
  • For unknown reasons, a shiny Mewtwo from Gold, Silver, and Crystal will appear black instead of green when viewed through Pokémon Stadium 2.
  • One of Mewtwo's alternate "costumes" in Super Smash Bros. Melee makes it green, similar to its normal shiny form.
  • In the games, its birthday is February 6, as stated in a journal quote from the Pokémon Mansion.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mewtwo's Standard Special attack, Shadow Ball is able to hit Jigglypuff, a Normal-type, which it would not normally be able to do. This is not usually considered a true representation of the move, as in other games of that series, moves that are usually super-effective against a type do not apply, e.g. in Super Smash Bros. Brawl Charizard's Flamethrower does not deal massive amounts of damage to Lucario or Ivysaur, and similarly does not deal very low damage to Squirtle.
  • Although Mewtwo's signature move in Super Smash Bros. Melee, as well as in the anime, is Shadow Ball, it can't learn Shadow Ball without TM30.
  • Mewtwo can learn damaging moves of all types except Dragon.
  • Mewtwo is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 680 that is not a version mascot.

Origin

Mewtwo is the result of humankind's attempts at creating a genetically enhanced clone of a Pokémon.

Its nature and origin are similar to elements of Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, in which a life-form created through unnatural means turns on its creators. Like Mew, Mewtwo has some feline characteristics. Its body structure is much larger as a result of gene-splicing.

Name origin

Mewtwo's name is a combination of Mew, referring to the Pokémon on which it was based, and two, indicating that it is a clone of Mew. It also sounds somewhat phonetically similar to the English word mutant (myūtanto).
