Trouble at the Alola Fair (Japanese: アローラフェアの一大事 A Serious Matter at the Alola Fair) was a costume event in Pokémon Masters EX. It was focused on the sync pairs Larry (Special Costume) & Flamigo and Clive & Amoonguss. It also introduced Samson Oak as an NPC.
During this event, players could earn event points by completing battles. Players received rewards based on the number of points accumulated, including Battle Points, 5★ Scout Tickets, a Tech Move Candy Coin, a 5★ Power-Up, and medals. All battles could be challenged an unlimited number of times except Daily Extreme Battle 1, which could only be challenged once per day.

This event featured the Battle Challenge, where players were challenged to defeat a team of strong opponents. Players could complete event missions by clearing these areas with one or fewer sync pairs fainting and sync pairs with specific theme skills on the team.

Plot
An Alola Region Fair organized by the Aether Foundation is gaining popularity as a spot where one could go to enjoy Alolan specialties. Lear, Rachel and Sawyer arrive to congratulate Lusamine on its apparent success so far, but she instead humbly attributes its success to everyone who offered to help out, including its employees. As she mentions its planner's enthusiasm, Faba arrives to claim credit for this idea and a possible promotion. However, she sternly reminds him that it was not a solo endeavor, much to his dismay and Lear's amusement.
Meanwhile, Kabu meets up with Larry in the city and is left flabbergasted by his brightly colored outfit. As Larry explains, Geeta had thrust the outfit onto him the moment she heard he was going to the Alola Fair on his day off as a "present". Kabu can only say there's little he can do about receiving a kind gesture. Nonetheless, as much as Larry would have preferred to attend the event in his usual attire, it remains a great opportunity to try out Alolan cuisine alongside his Flamigo.
Meanwhile, at Pasio Academy, Jacq and Clavell have finished giving Professor Oak a campus tour, and he gladly accepts the opportunity to be a guest lecturer. Shortly after he leaves, the two overhear Giacomo, Juliana, and Eri discussing a recent issue where some students claiming to be from Pasio Academy are posting inflammatory comments and harassing vendors related to the Alola Fair on social media. Juliana mentions the possibility that they're doing this for views and attraction, but nonetheless, the three have not been able to locate these alleged students. Clavell grows concerned when Juliana also mentions other students want to get back at these troublemakers.
Back at the Alola Fair, Larry is savoring samples of Alolan cuisine. He notices one stall serving Z-Sets and requests a special set from Mallow, finding its flavor unique. Lana and Kiawe are surprised by him finishing the set and more importantly savoring the flavors. Larry then runs into a Pasio Academy student calling himself Clive, who is also impressed that he managed to finish those specials. However, Larry immediately sees through his disguise and addresses him as Director Clavell, wondering if the disguise is part of his job at the academy. He sympathizes with the "plight" of teachers as Clive makes a hasty retreat.
In an alley, Clive recollects himself and refocuses his mission to find the students who are causing trouble. He runs into two Sightseers and requests aid in searching for Alolan specialities, who in turn bring him to a man with an Alolan Exeggutor who looks like Professor Oak. The man introduces himself as Samson Oak, a Pokemon researcher studying Alolan regional variants. Seeing Clive's confusion, Samson explains the mix-up between him and his Kantonian cousin is a reoccurring issue, and one of the Sightseers encourages him to listen to his lecture. He listens to it for a while in fascination before he realizes how much time has passed. At the same time, the two and a nearby Larry overhear Faba learning about the negative reviews about the fair from two employees, and is furious on getting bad press on an event he's in charge of planning and the associated blame that could result in the loss of his status. Clive and Samson offer their help in searching the troublemakers, and Larry arrives to reveal that earlier, he ran into some rowdy kids causing a fuss and drove them off with a Pokémon battle so he could enjoy his food in peace. He now realizes they were part of a bigger problem, and does remember their faces enough to identify them.
The group see a Lass, a Punk Girl, and a Camper harassing a Street Thug for poor customer service. In the face of Faba's accusations and Clive's theory that they're not Pasio Academy students, they proudly reveal themselves as members of Team Break, wanting to take down the academy. They believe the academy is full of nothing but goody-goodies, and they hate trying to fit into society and being a "boring adult" like Faba. Larry speaks up, agreeing with them that freedom as an adult is limited. However, he is also of the opinion that not standing out is a way to live that allows one to focus on things they want to do. He points out that standing out in a bad way like them just gets them hammered back down, and by extension gives them less freedom. As long as one follows the rules, nobody else can tell them how to live their life. Samson adds on that, from his research on regional variants, adapting to one's environment can draw out potential rather than fighting against it. Clive suggests that they give Pasio Academy a try before jumping to conclusions, and the Team Break members reluctantly agree to stop.
As the fair winds down, Faba offers Clive a referral to the Aether Foundation, but Clive turns it town. He reveals his true identity as Clavell, director of an academy in Paldea, much to Faba and Samson's shock. Larry interrupts, leading Faba to question if he's also someone important in disguise. Larry simply states he's an average, everyday employee and thanks him for a great day off at the Alola fair. As Larry leaves, Clavell muses that living an ordinary life seems easy at first glance, but it's rather difficult to achieve in reality, and wonders if he should ask Larry to give a lecture someday.

| (City; Lusamine looks at a group of Trainers gathered around booths) | |
| The Alola Region Fair was being held on Pasio. It was garnering a lot of popularity as a spot where one could go to enjoy Alolan specialties. | |
| (Lear, Sawyer, and Rachel approach Lusamine) | |
| Lear | The fair seems to be a success! |
| (Lusamine turns to face Lear) | |
| Lusamine | All thanks to your support, of course. This was also made possible by everyone from Alola who pitched in to help out... and the employees of Aether Foundation. Our planner has been very enthusiastic about this project. |
| ??? | Oh? Did I just hear you mention me, the Aether Foundation's last line of defense? |
| (Faba approaches the group) | |
| Faba | I am Faba, the planner and the one responsible for this event! |
| Lear | So it was your idea, Faba! You should be proud of the work you've done. Keep it up! |
| Faba | Yes, of course, sir! Rest assured, I'll continue to exceed your expectations! The Aether Foundation's reputation will surely reap the benefits of this fair! And so, President Lusamine, if you'd be so kind as to consider that promotion for me, I'm sure— |
| Lusamine | Please remember that this event was not a solo endeavor on your part. |
| Faba | Gwah... |
| Lear | Bwahahaha! It seems that—like me—you're being put through your paces, Faba! I know the feeling! |

| (Shopping district; Larry is wearing his special costume; Kabu approaches him) | |
| Kabu | Hm? Larry? |
| Larry | Hello, Kabu. |
| Kabu | That's a rather...loud outfit you've got on. Did you want to try out a new look? |
| Larry | Not at all. Actually... |
| (Flashback to Larry in his normal outfit; Geeta approaches him) | |
| Geeta | Larry, I hear you have plans to go to the Alola fair on your day off? |
| Larry | ... ... ... Yes, I do, but... |
| Geeta | Here, this is for you. |
| (Larry changes into his special costume) | |
| Larry | ... ... ... What is this? |
| Geeta | It's a present. Consider it my thanks for all your hard work. I figured if you're going to the Alola fair, you'll enjoy it even more wearing that outfit! |
| Larry | ... ... ... |
| (Back to present) | |
| Larry | ...and that's what happened. It was a kind gesture, so I couldn't NOT wear it... |
| Kabu | Hahaha... Nothing you can do about that, I suppose. |
| Larry | I personally would have been more comfortable in my usual attire... but that aside, today is a great opportunity to try out some Alolan cuisine. |
| (Larry sends out his Flamigo) | |
| Larry | Flamigo and I plan on resting our wings and enjoying our time here. |
| (Flamigo cries out; transition to Jacq and Clavell in front of Pasio Academy) | |
| Jacq | And so... That concludes our campus tour! |
| Clavell | What are your thoughts on Pasio Academy? |
| Professor Oak | I think it's fantastic! I'd be more than happy to be a guest lecturer here! |
| Clavell | We'd appreciate that, Professor Oak! |
| (Jacq and Clavell wave good-bye to Professor Oak as he leaves) | |
| Jacq | Wow! We did it, Director Clavell! |
| Clavell | I'm looking forward to his lectures myself. |
| ??? | That's not good... |
| (Jacq and Clavell turn around and see Juliana, Giacomo, and Eri looking concerned; they approach the trio) | |
| Clavell | Did something happen? |
| Juliana | Yeah... We heard that some academy students were causing trouble... |
| Clavell | Students from the academy, you say? |
| Giacomo | Director, you've heard that an Alola fair's under way, right? |
| Clavell | Yes, indeed. Is it related to that? |
| Giacomo | Some students claiming to be from Pasio Academy have been posting about the fair on social media... but it's all this really inflammatory, negative stuff... |
| Eri | They've been harassing the vendors at the fair, baiting them to get angry... And they've been writing over-the-top negative reviews about the food being served... |
| Clavell | Why would they do such a thing? |
| Juliana | I think they're just doing it for the views. That sort of content tends to attract a lot of attention. People share and comment more on content like that, so the person who posted it can get a lot of attention. |
| Giacomo | But we still don't know who's doing this, 'cause they've been hiding their faces and names. |
| Eri | And it would only add fuel to the fire if we tried to identify them publicly... |
| Clavell | I see... |
| Juliana | We would really like to get them to stop as soon as possible. We've seen comments from people saying they want to know who's posting so they can get back at them... |
| Clavell | ... ... ... |

| (City; Larry receives food from an Aether Foundation employee manning a booth and steps away to taste it) | |
| Larry | (Let's see... First is the Take Down steak? The thickness is fantastic. And each bite floods my mouth with delicious umami...) (Now, next we have a malasada. It's soft but also pleasantly chewy... Just like the guidebook said.) (Tapu Cocoa... What a heartwarming flavor. It's so simple, and yet there's a subtle complexity to it...) (What's next?) |
| (Larry looks around and approaches a booth run by Mallow, Lana, and Kiawe) | |
| Larry | (Z-Sets?) (The menu says they have meat, fish, and vegetarian sets...) (Wait. There's also a special set?) Excuse me. Could I have a special Z-Set? |
| Mallow | Thanks for stopping by! One special set coming right up! People say our flavors are pretty unique... Does that sound OK? |
| Larry | That's fine. |
| (Mallow gets the food from the booth) | |
| Mallow | Order up! One special Z-Set! |
| Larry | Thank you. |
| (Fade to black) | |
| *munch munch* *gulp* | |
| (Fade back in on Larry) | |
| Larry | (The flavors are indeed unique...but they're not bad at all.) (So this is what Alolan home cooking tastes like...) Thank you for the food. |
| (Larry leaves, and Mallow waves at him) | |
| Mallow | Thanks again for stopping by! Come again! |
| Lana | Unbelievable... He finished an entire special... |
| Kiawe | And he was really savoring it, too! |
| (Transition to Larry walking past other stalls) | |
| ??? | 'Sup. You're pretty cool. |
| (Clive approaches Larry) | |
| ??? | I also tried one of those specials... But I couldn't finish it. |
| Larry | Oh. Thank you. |
| (Larry is silent for a moment) | |
| Larry | Um... Director Clavell? |
| ??? | You must have me confused with someone else. |
| Clive | The name's Clive. I'm a Pasio Academy student. |
| Larry | OK... |
| Clive | Oh! I don't have time to chat. Sorry, but I should go. There's something I need to take care of. |
| (Clive runs off) | |
| Larry | (Is that part of his job at the academy?) (Teachers must have it rough, too...) |
| (Transition to Clive arriving in a plaza) | |
| Clive | (Phew... That was close. I was almost discovered!) (I have to hurry and find those students who are causing trouble.) |
| (Clive approaches a pair of Sightseers) | |
| Clive | Excuse me. I'm looking for some Alolan specialties... |
| Sightseer (1) | Oh, I know a place you could go! |
| Sightseer (2) | There's more to Alola than just the food! Here, follow us! |
| (The Sightseers bring Clive to Samson Oak and his Exeggutor) | |
| Clive | (Professor Oak?!) |
| Samson Oak | Oh! Well, hello there. Good to meet you. I'm Oak—Samson Oak. I'm a Pokémon researcher studying regional variants in Alola! |
| Clive | Hm? Samson? Regional variants? Ahem... Pardon me, but...you're Professor Oak, right? |
| (Samson Oak is confused for a moment) | |
| Samson Oak | Ahahaha! Oh, I see! Actually, the Professor Oak from Kanto is my cousin Samuel. People sometimes get us mixed up... But if you look closely, we're pretty different, wouldn't you say? |
| Clive | Oh! My apologies! Er—I mean, my bad! |
| Sightseer (2) | Oh, wow! You look just like what I saw in the magazines and stuff! This is THE Alolan experience! |
| Sightseer (1) | Would you like to listen to his lecture with us? I'm sure it'd be pretty helpful, if you're a student... |
- Negative Reviews
| Name | Text |
|---|---|
| (Plaza in the evening; Clive is still listening to Samson Oak talk, but the Sightseers have left) | |
| Clive | My goodness, that was fascinating! I wasn't expecting such an informative lecture about regional variants! |
| Samson Oak | Hahaha! I'm honored that you found it useful! |
| Clive | I enjoyed myself thoroughly... That lecture was worth every second. |
| (Clive pauses for a moment) | |
| Clive | Oh, man! I just remembered I was supposed to be doing something else! Please excuse me! I spent too much time here... I need to get back to my search! |
| Samson Oak | Oh? You're looking for something? |
| Clive | Yes, actually. I'm looking for some students who were causing a fuss on social media... |
| Faba | Wh-what?! Negative reviews about the fair?! |
| (Cut to Faba talking to two Aether Foundation employees; Larry is listening nearby) | |
| Larry | ... ... ... |
| Aether Foundation (1) | Shhh! Keep it down! |
| Aether Foundation (2) | Apparently, they're using social media accounts to flood us with bad reviews... |
| Faba | How DARE they! I can't have trouble at a fair that I'M in charge of planning! Why, I'll get all the blame if it becomes a liability, and my status at the foundation will be at stake! |
| Aether Foundation (2) | But what can we do about it? |
| (Clive and Samson Oak approach Faba) | |
| Clive | Hey. Could you let us in on some of the details of that? |
| Faba | And who are YOU? Outsiders have no business with us! |
| Clive | Students from the academy I attend might be behind this. |
| Faba | WH-WHAT?! |
| (Larry turns around to look at Faba as he cries out) | |
| Clive | Let us help you find the people behind those social media accounts. |
| Samson Oak | I'm sure we'll be able to find them faster if we join forces. |
| (Faba folds his arms, thinking; Larry walks up behind him) | |
| Larry | If that's the case, I might have a lead... |
| (The others turn to face Larry) | |
| Clive | Oh? |
| (Flashback to Larry at the fair; he notices a Punk Girl, a Camper, and a Lass jumping in front of a booth) | |
| Larry | I saw some rowdy kids causing a fuss while I was enjoying some Alolan dishes... |
| (Larry approaches the kids; they get annoyed and send out Magnemite, Purrloin, and Zubat; Larry sends out his Flamigo and defeats them easily) | |
| Larry | I just wanted to enjoy my food in peace, so I drove them off with a Pokémon battle... |
| (Fade to black) | |
| Larry | But at the time, I didn't realize they were causing an even bigger problem. |
| (Back to present) | |
| Larry | It's not much, but I do remember their faces, so perhaps I could lend you a hand... |
| Faba | Really?! Quickly, then! Lead the way! |

| Lass | Oops! Busted! |
| Punk Girl | Yeah, it was us! We're students from Pasio Academy, and we've been causing ALL kinds of trouble! |
| Clive | Do not lie to us. |
| Punk Girl | Huh? |
| Clive | I know each and every one of the students at the academy. You're not actually students at Pasio Academy, are you. |
| Lass | Ugh, he got us. |
| (The kids turn around and put on Team Break masks) | |
| Masked Woman (1) | We were just trying to take down that academy full of nothin' but goody-goodies! |
| Masked Woman (2) | Yeah! We hate getting judged! And trying to fit into society is a drag! We're gonna live our lives how WE wanna live 'em! |
| Masked Woman (1) | Plus, I don't wanna be a boring adult when I grow up... |
| Masked Woman (2) | like THAT guy over there! |
| Masked Woman (1) | Look at him! He's sooo desperate to get a promotion! How pathetic is that?! |
| Faba | EXCUSE me?! |
| Larry | Well, I can't say you're completely wrong... In this world, freedom is limited—especially once you become a working adult. |
| Faba | H-hey! What are you— |
| Larry | However, I'm of the opinion that NOT standing out is one way to live... One that allows you to focus on the things you want to do. Stand out in a bad way, and you get hammered back in. That's about as far from freedom as you can get. Right now, by making all of this fuss and trouble... aren't you just creating more of a hassle and less freedom for yourselves? |
| Masked Woman (1) | I...I mean... |
| Larry | As long as you follow the rules, nobody can get on your case about how you live your life. And as long as your work's done on time, you can spend the rest of your day however you please. |
| Masked Woman (2) | ... ... ... |
| Samson Oak | There are times when adapting to your environment, rather than fighting it, can draw out your hidden potential! That's something I've learned from researching Pokémon regional variants! |
| Clive | Yeah... Also, Pasio Academy is not the kind of place that'd try to hold you back from being who you are and doing what you want to do. You should really give it a try before jumping to conclusions. |
| Masked Woman (1) | Ugh! Stop nagging, already. We get it! |
| Masked Woman (2) | We'll stop posting, if that gets you old fogies off our backs. |
| (Fade to black) | |
| After that, the Alola fair ended as a huge success. | |
| (Fade in on Faba, Larry, Clive, and Samson Oak in the city at night) | |
| Faba | I was quite worried at one point, but now I can breathe a sigh of relief! By the way, young man...are you interested in advancing your career? I would be more than happy to submit a referral on your behalf to the Aether Foundation. |
| Clive | Sorry, but no can do. After all... |
| (Clavell changes back into his normal clothes) | |
| Clavell | Allow me to reintroduce myself. My name is Clavell. I disguised myself to go undercover, but I'm actually the director of an academy in the Paldea region. |
| Faba | WH-WHAT?! Oh, my! I DID wonder why you were so well-mannered! |
| Samson Oak | Wow, you're the director? My apologies for any rudeness on my part! |
| (Samson Oak and Clavell laugh) | |
| Larry | Mr. Faba... |
| Faba | Eeek! D-don't tell me YOU are also someone important in disguise! |
| Larry | No, I'm not. I'm just your average, everyday employee... I just wanted to say...I had a great day off at the Alola fair. All of the food was outstanding. Thank you. |
| (Larry leaves) | |
| Clavell | (Living an ordinary life may seem easy, but it's actually quite hard to achieve.) (I should ask him to give a lecture one of these days, too...) |
