New Heroes Are Born (Japanese: ニューヒーロー誕生！？ Birth of New Heroes!?) was a costume event in Pokémon Masters EX. It was focused on the sync pairs Barry (Special Costume) & Heracross and Selene (Special Costume) & Scizor. Infamous Pokéstar Villains was a continuation of this event's story.
During this event, players could earn event vouchers from battles that could be redeemed in the shop. All battles could be challenged an unlimited number of times except Daily Extreme Battle 1, which could only be challenged once per day. Extra vouchers were automatically exchanged with coins once the event was finished.
This event featured the Battle Challenge, where players were challenged to defeat a team of strong opponents. Players could complete event missions by clearing these areas with teams using various theme skills, earning medals and other rewards.
In addition, players could earn a medal for completing all the story areas in the event.
First run
The event first ran from April 12 to May 17, 2024. The "Barry Costume Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Barry (Special Costume) & Heracross from the beginning of the event to May 20, 2024, and the "Selene Costume Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Selene (Special Costume) & Scizor from April 14 to May 20, 2024.
In this run, the type of voucher that players could earn was Event Voucher Z. Event mission rewards included medals, Gems, Battle Points, a Tech Move Candy Coin, and a Sprint Move Candy Coin.
The player could battle using Barry (Special Costume) & Heracross or Selene (Special Costume) & Scizor to obtain +0.6× bonus vouchers; The Masked Royal & Incineroar, Crasher Wake & Floatzel, or Palmer & Regigigas to obtain +0.4× bonus vouchers; and any unlisted Sinnoh or Alola sync pairs to obtain +0.2× bonus vouchers.
Second run
The event reran from June 6 to 24, 2025. The "Super Spotlight Costume Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Barry (Special Costume) & Heracross, Selene (Special Costume) & Scizor, Brycen-Man & Zoroark, and Bellelba & Swoobat for the duration of the event.
In this run, the type of voucher that players could earn was Event Voucher D. Event missions were changed to reward only medals and Gems.
The player could battle using Barry (Special Costume) & Heracross or Selene (Special Costume) & Scizor to obtain +0.6× bonus vouchers; The Masked Royal & Incineroar, Crasher Wake & Floatzel, Palmer & Regigigas, or Penny & Sylveon to obtain +0.4× bonus vouchers; and any unlisted Sinnoh or Alola sync pairs to obtain +0.2× bonus vouchers.
Plot
A crowd watches Crasher Wake and the Masked Royal battle against a Swimmer and a Black Belt in the city. In the audience, Barry and Selene once again debate who between the two wrestlers are better, to the amusement of Penny, who is standing behind them. Eventually, the Swimmer's Carvanha and the Black Belt's Hitmonlee are defeated by the Masked Royal's Incineroar and Crasher Wake's Floatzel. As Crasher Wake proclaims his catchphrase amidst the crowd's cheers, the Masked Royal decides it'd be a waste to end right now and asks if anyone in the crowd wants to show off their fighting spirit like them. Although most are uncertain, Barry and Selene bravely step up to the challenge. They send out their Heracross and Scizor, respectively, and quickly defeat the Swimmer's Carvanha and the Black Belt's Hitmonlee. To their surprise, rather than being heroes like Crasher Wake or the Masked Royal, the crowd's excitement had faltered rather quickly; Barry in particular thought being strong was what it took to being like his "master". The Masked Royal and Crasher Wake stop by and explain that, though they are strong, they are also missing something crucial; Crasher Wake additionally promises that once they figure out what that is, the two will take them on.
Spurred on by this promise, Barry and Selene start training frantically, but they are still stumped on what it is they're missing. Spying on them nearby, Penny nervously makes the choice to approach the two to give them advice from a fan's perspective, even if their eagerness does briefly overwhelm her. She asks them what being a hero means to them, and Barry quickly says that being strong and cool like their idols. Penny explains they're only half right: as heroes, they also need to inspire hope and courage in the audience to get them fired up. She stops herself from geeking out, but Selene picks up on Penny's love for hero shows, and Barry encourages her to tell them more.
Days later, Raihan and Gordie are approached by Barry, Selene, and Penny, as Penny knows they are popular in Galar because of how they get the crowd going in their Gym battles. Knowing that Barry and Selene are teaming up, the two Gym Leaders advise them to pull off a tag-team move that the crowd wants to see, like how when they team up, Raihan throws down a Sandstorm to support Gordie's Rock-type Pokémon.
The three then seek out Palmer in the mountains, and Professor Kukui briefly interrupts their training to check on the two, much to Penny's surprise. Palmer explains that there's more to making a battle exciting than going all out to secure a win: in the Battle Tower, for example, he adjusts his strength based on his opponent's win streak, drawing out their strength in the process. Penny and Kukui agree, with Kukui suggesting they take a hit to show off the strength of both them and their opponents.
Inspired, Barry and Selene discuss all they learned with Penny. They need to add some variety by getting into a pinch from time to time, though they also need some way to make a comeback afterwards. Penny suggests they come up with finishing moves for that, so Barry and Selene ponder what could be their finishing move. Selene brings up Z-Moves and sync moves, but Barry points out that sync moves are something everyone on Pasio uses. Penny disagrees, noting how special effects can spice up even a simple punch or kick, so something well-known can be exciting if someone unexpected uses them. Selene then remembers that Heracross and Scizor both have Mega Evolutions, something that excites Barry, given how cool it would be if he and Heracross could achieve such a power after traveling through Sinnoh together. Penny asks Selene how she and Scizor met, and Selene explains it evolved after she traded Pokémon with Elio on Pasio. She thinks that Mega Evolution could give her the same jolt of shock as the trade Evolution did.
That night, as Barry, Selene, and Penny walk through the shopping district, they're approached by the Masked Royal and Crasher Wake, who give them new costumes for their upcoming battle. Penny geeks out over the act, calling it the moment where the first generation of heroes passes on the torch to newer generations, though Crasher Wake protests the notion that they're retiring. Nonetheless, Selene and Barry promise to show their idols their answer to the question, "what is a hero?".
On the day of the match, the Masked Royal and Crasher Wake welcome Barry and Selene, dressed in their new costumes, in the arena for their grand showdown between veteran heroes and the upstarts. The Masked Royal's Incineroar and Crasher Wake's Floatzel prove to be difficult opponents, though Barry's Heracross and Selene's Scizor fare well. After enduring the combination attack of their opponents, Barry and Selene Mega Evolve their Pokémon and retaliate. After a brief clash, Incineroar and Floatzel are the ones who fall.
Crasher Wave congratulates the two for their victory, and while he once again denies ever taking Barry on as an apprentice, he does concede that he can now take Barry on as a rival. The Masked Royal likewise is proud that their training with Penny and Palmer paid off, though he quickly changes the subject when Selene asks him how he knows, declaring this as the day they become allies who protect the peace on Pasio.
Days later, Barry and Selene wonder when their next match is, though Penny says it takes time to arrange an opponent. Just then, a Swimmer arrives to deliver the news that the Masked Royal and Crasher Wake have been defeated by an unknown villain, much to Barry and Selene's shock.
