Plot
Lisia and Dawn meet up with Wallace in the Pokémon Center, having heard that he's hosting an event to celebrate the new year. They're excited to see what he comes up with, and he tells them that it's going to be spectacular. However, he's a little troubled by something Sabrina told him: she had a premonition that he would need something "large, white, and long" to succeed, and he hasn't been able to figure out what that is.
Later, in the city, Wallace explains his event to a group of interested sync pairs, including all the other sync pairs who have New Year's outfits. They'll be climbing a mountain to see the first sunrise of the year from its peak, and he has prepared a fireworks show with his partner Blacephalon for people to enjoy once they reach the top. The kids are especially excited about the fireworks, and Clair comments that the Drampa she's with is fond of kids. Lance and Lillie ask her if Drampa is her new partner Pokémon, and she explains that they're not officially partners yet—she found Drampa playing with some children on Pasio a few days ago and hasn't been able to find Drampa's Trainer, so she's just taking care of it for now. Then, she proudly declares that she'll succeed in climbing the mountain. Meanwhile, Katherine and Slurpuff watch the group from a distance.
Wallace leads Lisia and Dawn to the beach, where the fireworks will be launched from. He asks them to help him prepare and, after they agree, says that Blacephalon is happy for their help. Lisia comments on how well he understands Blacephalon, and Dawn admits that she's surprised a Water-type user like Wallace formed a sync pair with Blacephalon. He explains that he found Blacephalon on the beach the other day, when it had just come out of an Ultra Wormhole. He was impressed by the artistry of its explosions, and Blacephalon liked Wallace's artistry with water. Since the Ultra Wormhole closed before Blacephalon could return to its home world, Wallace decided to form a sync pair with it to help it share its flame artistry with others. He thinks that Blacephalon's flames will help him put on an exceptional performance, and he and Lisia strike a pose with Blacephalon. Lisia asks if he ever figured out what was in Sabrina's premonition, and he admits that he still has no idea.
After the fireworks are prepared, the group of prospective mountain climbers gathers along the trail. The kids are still playing with Clair's Drampa, and the others admire its friendliness and protectiveness. However, Clair is anxious to get going. Suddenly, laughing at the sight of Clair getting pushed around by her own Pokémon, Katherine appears and declares that dragon masters aren't beautiful. Clair demands to know who she is, so Katherine introduces herself as a disciple of Valerie and an amazing Fairy-type user. She says that Dragon-types are no match for Fairy-type Pokémon, which irritates Clair to the point of challenging Katherine to a battle. The two battle for a while as the others continue up the mountain, but suddenly Katherine's Slurpuff notices something. After stopping to smell the air, Katherine realizes that Slurpuff smelled rain. Clair gets angry, realizing that rain would ruin the event, and Katherine despairs that they won't make it to the top of the mountain or be able to see the sunrise or fireworks. Clair declares that she won't let the rain ruin their new year, especially not for the kids who were so excited about the fireworks. After looking at Drampa, she gets an idea and asks it to fly her to Wallace and Blacephalon.
Down at the beach, Wallace watches it rain and says he'll have to cancel the event. However, Clair arrives and suggests that they have Blacephalon ride Drampa to cause an explosion that clears the rain clouds. Wallace approves of the plan.
At the top of the mountain, everyone has noticed the weather getting bad, and the kids are sad that they can't see the sunrise or the fireworks. Lisia tries to cheer them up, but Lance and Volkner are worried that they need to head down the mountain before the storm gets worse. However, Sabrina tells them to wait, and Katherine arrives and tells them to stay because the rain is going to stop. Suddenly, they see Blacephalon and Drampa flying through the sky, and the clouds get smaller and eventually clear away, allowing everyone to see the fireworks. Afterwards, Wallace and Clair arrive on the mountaintop with their partners to see that everyone enjoyed the show. Wallace explains that Drampa and Blacephalon's moves were able to clear the sky, and that the "large, white, and long" thing from Sabrina's premonition was Drampa. Then, Katherine and Clair commend each other on accomplishing their tasks. However, Katherine then points out that CLair reached the top of the mountain by riding Drampa instead of walking, so she's better than Clair because she didn't cheat. The two then slip back into their argument and start battling again. Wallace says that neither wants to give in because they're both similar to each other, and he thinks that such relationships have their own artistry.

| Wallace | May we begin this new year with elegance! |
| Wallace | Hmm, what would be the perfect highlight for a New Year's event...? |
| Clair | Heh! You look troubled. Would you like Drampa and me to perform an astounding dance? |
| Wallace | That's a nice idea! Everyone would enjoy that! |
- The Key to Success?
| Name | Text |
|---|---|
| (Pokémon Center; Lisia and Dawn are talking to Wallace) | |
| Lisia | Uncle Wall! I heard that you'll be hosting a New Year's event! |
| Dawn | So, you're hosting a magnificent event to celebrate the upcoming year... I can't wait to see what you've got planned! |
| Lisia | If it's an event Uncle Wall is organizing... it's bound to be wonderful, elegant, AND glorious! Am I right, Uncle Wall? |
| Wallace | Yes! I'll make sure it's fun for everyone. I hope you look forward to it! |
| (Lisia and Dawn cheer) | |
| Wallace | There's just...one thing I can't figure out. But once I do, the day should be wonderful and perfect! |
| Dawn | Are you talking about your partner Pokémon? It's an Ultra Beast, right? |
| Lisia | Oh, are you having problems dealing with your new partner? |
| Wallace | Not at all! Blacephalon is a wonderful partner Pokémon! What's actually on my mind is something Sabrina told me. She said she had a premonition that something "large, white, and long" would lead to my success. What could my key to success be? |
- A Dragon That's Fond of Kids
| Name | Text |
|---|---|
| (Town; Lillie, Lance, Volkner, Sabrina, Dawn, Lisia, and Clair are gathered around Wallace, all wearing their New Year's outfits; some kids are also among the group) | |
| Sabrina | Mountain climbing? |
| Wallace | Exactly! I'd like you to challenge a mountain this time! |
| Volkner | But why? |
| Wallace | Well, the hint is a water Pokémon I love! A Magikarp living for many years can leap a mountain using Splash... It's a message from Pokémon! Traveling long roads on foot will lead to success! We should follow Magikarp's example... and climb a mountain to see the first sunrise of the year, in hopes that each of our New Year's resolutions will come true! So, in the spirit of supporting this endeavor... Blacephalon and I have prepared a fireworks display as a glorious treat! Please enjoy it along with the marvelous scenery from the top of the mountain! |
| Preschooler | Yay! Fireworks! |
| Youngster | I can't wait! |
| Poké Kid | Let's do our best to climb to the top! |
| (Clair's Drampa cries out) | |
| Clair | You're quite fond of children, aren't you? |
| Lance | Oh? That's a rare Pokémon you've got there, Clair. |
| Lillie | Is she your new partner Pokémon? |
| Clair | Yes. Don't you think she's the perfect dragon Pokémon for me? Well, we're not officially partners yet, though. |
| Lance | What do you mean? |
| Clair | I found her a couple of days ago playing with some children. I thought it was strange because I couldn't see her Trainer. So I looked around but couldn't find anyone... In the end, I decided to take care of her myself. |
| Lillie | Oh, so you helped a Pokémon that was in trouble! |
| Lance | That's excellent. You've certainly grown, Clair. |
| Clair | I can't stay inexperienced forever! Watch me! I'll succeed in climbing the mountain for New Year's! And I'll gain the approval of my master in Blackthorn City... by becoming a Gym Leader with impeccable skill and spirit! With my pride on the line, I won't lose! |
| Lillie | I-I don't think there's any winning or losing in climbing a mountain... |
| Lance | I reckon it'll take more time until our master accepts her... |
| (A furisode girl with a Slurpuff watches the group from behind a tree) | |
| ??? | Hehe... |
- Artist from Another World

|---|---|
| (Wallace and Blacephalon lead Lisia and Dawn to the beach) | |
| Wallace | Here's where the fireworks will be launched. This way, we won't have to worry about any fire spreading! Now then, can you help me prepare? |
| Lisia | Sure! |
| Wallace | Blacephalon seems happy that you're here. |
| Lisia | You totally get how Blacephalon feels, don't you, Uncle Wall? |
| Dawn | You're a Water-type user, so I was surprised when I heard you became a sync pair with Blacephalon... Why did that happen? |
| Wallace | Hmm... Well, I suppose I should explain. It all happened the other day... |
| (Flashback to Wallace and Milotic on the beach, facing Blacephalon; an Ultra Wormhole is open behind it) | |
| Wallace | This Pokémon... It's one of those Ultra Beasts I've been hearing about... Return to the world you came from, you— |
| (Blacephalon cries out and uses a Fire-type move) | |
| Wallace | Ahaha! Wonderful! I didn't just feel the enormous impact of your explosion—I also sensed the beauty of it! What a glorious performance! I'd even call it the artistry of flames! If that's the case, allow me to show you the artistry of water! Milotic! Illusion time! |
| (Milotic cries out and uses a Water-type move) | |
| Wallace | Did you like that? I suppose you understand that there's no need for us to fight. |
| (The Ultra Wormhole starts to fade) | |
| Wallace | Oh! You need to go back now, or the Ultra Wormhole will— |
| (The Ultra Wormhole disappears) | |
| Wallace | Oh no! How could this happen? |
| (Back to present) | |
| Wallace | We both came to a mutual understanding as fellow entertainers, but Blacephalon lost its way back home... It's sad—but not entirely bad! Blacephalon wants to display more of its flame artistry, and I'd like to help it! I've been called an artist and lover of water. If we combine that with Blacephalon's flames... I think we'd be able to put on an exceptional performance! |
| Lisia | So THAT'S why you two became a sync pair! How wonderful! |
| Wallace | Exactly! And it's elegant—blazingly so! |
| Lisia | And yet! |
| (Lisia and Wallace pose together with Blacephalon) | |
| Wallace | Utterly glorious! |
| (Blacephalon cries out) | |
| Dawn | I-I see... |
| Lisia | By the way, Uncle Wall... Did you figure out what Sabrina meant by that "large, white, and long" thing she told you about? |
| Wallace | Hmm... Actually, I have no idea what it could be. I wonder what she saw? |
| (Mountain; Clair's Drampa is playing with the kids from before, along with Lisia and Dawn; Lance, Volkner, Sabrina, and Lillie approach them) | |
| Lance | Oh? Have you finished preparing the fireworks? |
| Lisia | Yep! Uncle Wall and Blacephalon are ready! |
| Poké Kid | This Pokémon came to play with us earlier, too! |
| Preschooler | Do you wanna be friends with us? |
| (Drampa cries out happily, to Clair's annoyance) | |
| Volkner | What a friendly Pokémon. |
| Sabrina | That Drampa must really like being around children... |
| Lance | And it looks like she's been protecting the children from the dangers of the mountain. |
| Lillie | She's a kind Pokémon! |
| Clair | Come on... Drampa... I know you want to play games with children, but we need to get going... |
| ??? | Ahaha! What a pathetic Trainer! |
| (Someone approaches the group) | |
| ??? | You can't let a Pokémon control you like that... |
| (The person is revealed to be the furisode girl and Slurpuff from before) | |
| ??? | That's why dragon masters aren't beautiful! |
- Opponents That Fairies Are Good Against
| Name | Text |
|---|---|
| Clair | Excuse me?! Who the heck are you? |
| Katherine | I'm Katherine! A Gym Trainer in Laverre City—and a furisode girl, too! Which means I'm not only a disciple of Valerie—the world-renowned clothing designer... but I'm also an amazing Fairy-type user! |
| Clair | So what?! |
| Katherine | What opponents are fairies good against? I think you know the answer... Dragon Pokémon are no match for beautiful and cute fairy Pokémon! |
| Clair | What did you just say?! I won't allow you to talk bad about us dragon masters or dragon Pokémon! As the Gym Leader of Blackthorn City, I won't lose to you! |
| Katherine | Oooh? Well, at least you're a worthy opponent! OK then, let's battle! |
| (Clair starts to battle Katherine) | |
| Lillie | Oh...they both started battling... |
| Volkner | Hahaha! Seems like things are sparking up! |
| Sabrina | They're both doing what they want to do, I suppose... |
| Lance | *sigh* |
| (Fade to black) | |
| After a while... | |
| (Fade back to the mountain, where night has fallen) | |
| Clair | *pant* *pant* Urgh! Look at the time! This is all your fault—you picked a fight with me! Now I won't be able to reach the top of the mountain by sunrise because of you! |
| Katherine | What?! You're blaming me? |
| (Katherine's Slurpuff notices something and turns to her) | |
| Katherine | What's the matter, Slurpuff? |
| (Katherine stops and sniffs the air) | |
| Katherine | Ugh?! It's the smell of rain... |
| Clair | What?! Is it going to rain? That means the event might get canceled! |
| Katherine | D-don't get angry with me! Ugh! Whether we battle here or keep climbing the mountain, the result is the same... We won't make it to the top of the mountain...and we won't see the sunrise or fireworks... What a horrible way to start the new year... |
| Clair | ... ... ... Don't whine like that—you're being pathetic. |
| Katherine | What? |
| Clair | I won't let the rain ruin my future! Or anyone else's, for that matter! Everyone is looking forward to the sunrise and fireworks—especially the children! |
| Katherine | Ah—! |
| Clair | If we adults gave up, what would they think? Those kids have a longer future ahead of them—and far more potential! I won't ever give up! There must be a way... |
| (Drampa cries out) | |
| Clair | I know! Drampa! Can you fly to Wallace and Blacephalon? |
| Katherine | Wh-what're you planning on doing? |
| Clair | We'll beat the rain clouds! |
| Katherine | Huh?! |
| Clair | You go ahead and tell everyone to wait a little longer! |
| Katherine | W-wait?! |
| Clair | I'm counting on you! Let's go, Drampa! |
| (Clair and Drampa fly away) | |
- Beat the Rain Clouds!
| Name | Text |
|---|---|
| (Dark and rainy beach) | |
| Wallace | Unfortunately, we'll need to cancel the event... |
| Clair | Wait! |
| (Clair and Drampa rush up to Wallace and Blacephalon) | |
| Clair | *pant* *pant* It's too early to make that decision! If we have Blacephalon ride Drampa, they could cause an explosion to clear the rain clouds! |
| Wallace | Hahaha! Wonderful! That's an elegant plan—infuriatingly so! |
| (Mountain peak) | |
| Youngster | The weather's getting bad, huh... |
| Poké Kid | Can't we see the sunrise or the fireworks? |
| Dawn | Er...erm... |
| Lisia | D-don't get sad! OK? |
| Lance | The rain clouds are getting bigger... |
| Volkner | Yeah, we should probably start climbing down the mountain before it gets worse... |
| Sabrina | Wait... |
| Volkner | What's the matter? |
| Sabrina | Someone's coming to change the dark future... |
| (Katherine and Slurpuff appear) | |
| Katherine | E-everyone! The rain will stop! I think...? So, um, please don't leave just yet! |
| Lillie | Huh? What do you mean by that? |
| *KABOOM!* *BOOM!* | |
| (The group turns around) | |
| Lance | That's— |
| Lisia | Hey, look! It's Blacephalon and Drampa! |
| Dawn | Wow! The clouds are getting smaller! |
| (Everyone looks up at the sky in awe at the fireworks; the clouds clear, and Wallace and Clair arrive on top of the mountain) | |
| Wallace | Did you enjoy the artistry of flames decorating the sky? |
| Preschooler | Yup! It was so cool! |
| Poké Kid | It went "BOOM BOOM!" So powerful! |
| Dawn | So, you were able to launch all the fireworks we prepared! |
| Wallace | All thanks to Drampa and Blacephalon. The two of them using their moves together cleared the skies... and we were able to perform the finale of the event! |
| (The children and Drampa cheer) | |
| Clair | I'm glad that you were able to protect the children's smiles. |
| Wallace | I never expected the large, white, and long something that Sabrina told me about to mean Drampa! |
| (Sabrina chuckles, and Katherine approaches Clair) | |
| Katherine | I suppose you deserve to be called a dragon master... I didn't think you'd actually beat the rain clouds. |
| Clair | Of course I would! I'm surprised you were able to reach the top of the mountain in such a short time. I've changed my mind about you—only slightly, though. Oh, and... thanks for believing in me. |
| Lance | Just like a Magikarp that leaps over a mountain... they, too, have grown. |
| Katherine | Still, though... In the end, you got to the top of the mountain by riding Drampa, didn't you? So, I'm better than you because I didn't cheat—I climbed the mountain with my own feet! |
| Clair | Wha—?! Who do you think made the event a success?! |
| Katherine | That's a TOTALLY separate thing! |
| Clair | Ugh! It was stupid of me to give you ANY credit for this! Let's settle once and for all who's better! |
| Katherine | You're on! I'll never EVER lose to a dragon master. |
| (Clair and Katherine rush into battle) | |
| Sabrina | There they go again... |
| Lance | *sigh* They've still got a lot to learn... |
| Wallace | They're both similar to each other. Maybe neither one of them wants to give in. But such relationships can also shine beautifully... Don't you agree, Blacephalon? |
| (Blacephalon cheers) | |
