Middle-Aged Opposites (Japanese: 正反対のおじさんたち Middle-Aged Opposites) was a story event in Pokémon Masters EX. It was focused on the sync pairs Larry & Dudunsparce and Kabu & Centiskorch.
First run
The event first ran from June 14 to July 3, 2024. The "Larry Poké Fair Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Larry & Dudunsparce from the beginning of the event to July 10, 2024. The "Kabu Poké Fair Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Kabu & Centiskorch from June 16 to July 10, 2024.
During this event, players could earn Event Vouchers J from battles that could be redeemed in the shop. All battles could be challenged an unlimited number of times except Daily Extreme Battle 1, which could only be challenged once per day. Extra vouchers were automatically exchanged with coins once the event was finished.
The player could battle using Larry & Dudunsparce or Kabu & Centiskorch to obtain +0.6× bonus vouchers; Rika & Clodsire or Poppy & Tinkaton to obtain +0.4× bonus vouchers; and any unlisted sync pairs with the
Veteran Trainer theme skill to obtain +0.2× bonus vouchers.
This event featured the Battle Challenge, where players were challenged to defeat a team of strong opponents. Players could complete event missions by clearing these areas with teams using various theme skills, earning medals and other rewards.
Players could also earn a medal for completing all the story areas in the event.
Additionally, the music and artwork on the title screen were different than usual. The title screen artwork depicted Larry & Dudunsparce and Kabu & Centiskorch, and the background music was
Battle! (Paldea Elite Four: Larry) (Pokémon Masters EX Version). In addition, a special voice-over line of Larry and Kabu saying "Pokémon Masters EX" would play as soon as the game's logo appeared on the title screen, chosen at random each time the title screen was loaded.
Second run
The event reran again from September 7 to 19, 2025 as 2nd place in the Trainer Tales Championship. This run only contained the story areas; the battles, vouchers, and shop did not return. In addition, no missions were available, and no medals could be earned.
Plot
Lear invites invites several experienced veteran trainers from different regions to mentor younger trainers. Larry has been instructed by his by his boss, Champion Geeta, to participate in the veteran trainers' workshop. He is not particularly enthusiastic about teaching the younger generation, as it is not his strong suit, but he thinks he could share stories about overcoming challenging days at work. Kabu expresses discontent at being referred to as a veteran, and Larry perceives that Kabu is also not very excited about the situation.
The veterans begin teaching their mentees, with Larry assigned to Shauna, Tierno, and Trevor. Larry emphasizes his belief that battling should be straightforward and that complex tactics and elaborate moves are unnecessary. He insists that instructions given to Pokémon must be clear and accurate. Larry argues that attempting to stand out tends to create additional challenges. When Trevor inquires about Larry's Dudunsparce, Larry declines to answer, indicating it is outside his responsibilities. After receiving a phone call, Larry expresses gratitude to Shauna, Trevor, and Tierno for their efforts, mentioning that his time has come to an end. Shauna, Trevor, and Tierno react with surprise at his abrupt exit.
Rika and Poppy observe Larry's performance as a teacher. Rika suggests that Larry should adopt a more friendly demeanor, while Poppy comments that his students appeared tense. Larry acknowledges their suggestions but explains that it is simply his teaching style. He then informs Rika and Poppy that he is on his lunch break and leaves to eat. After lunch, Larry meets Kabu, who introduces himself by giving Larry his League Card. In return, Larry introduces himself with his business card. Kabu mentions that the workshops are beneficial, as he learned a lot from interacting with younger trainers, believing that life is about continuous training and learning. Larry questions Kabu on whether training is considered complete at a certain age and also asks why he is uncomfortable with the term "veteran," wondering if it is related to his mindset. Kabu shares that he has experienced much in his life and has been a trainer for a long time but maintains a rookie mindset due to feeling stuck in a rut as a Gym Leader. Kabu, after being scouted as a Pokémon Trainer, moved from Hoenn to Galar, full of motivation, but did not perform to his expectations. Champion Leon recognized Kabu's potential and helped him improve. Now, Kabu is doing well in the Major Division but wants to avoid complacency associated with being called a veteran, preferring to stay motivated and inspired by trainers of all ages.
The next day, Larry talks with Rika and Poppy about his encounter with Kabu. Rika reprimands Larry for responding with "I see" after Kabu told Larry about his rookie mindset, and Rika questions if Larry felt anything about being told that story. Poppy tells Larry that maybe Kabu was trying to tell him something; Larry is not exactly sure if Kabu was trying to tell him something. Larry felt it was best not to voice his opinion after Kabu told Larry about his background and mindset. Larry leaves as he has to go back to work, very much leaving Rika and Poppy in dismay.
After the workshop, Lear indicates that the program was successful and that positive feedback was received from the participants. Wulfric suggests celebrating with a party. Kabu asks Larry if he will be joining the party; to which Larry responds that he will not. Bertha notes that it must be so difficult for Larry to have so much work. Before departing, Kabu asks Larry if he can accompany him, noting that he has an early day tomorrow.
Larry, whilst walking with Kabu, knows that Kabu wants to discuss something with him. Kabu acknowledges Larry's assumption and inquires if it is true that Larry works as both a Gym Leader and an Elite Four member. Larry states that it is true and that the Paldean League is short-staffed. Kabu further questions whether that is the sole reason and observes that Larry is undoubtedly a skilled trainer with significant experience, having been invited to participate in a veteran trainer workshop. Larry concedes that this is somewhat accurate. Kabu expresses curiosity about Larry's meek nature and wonders if he has something troubling him, asking if he feels stuck in a rut as he once did. Larry apologizes and understands Kabu's perspective but clarifies that his situation is different. He explains that he values being ordinary. While Kabu seeks to rise to the top and face challenges, Larry simply desires to maintain his ordinary life. Kabu acknowledges their differing values and lifestyles, noting that unlike Kabu, Larry is not a passionate trainer, with his main concern being the demands of his boss. Kabu apologizes upon realizing that this is indicative of Larry's nature and recognizes the challenges of being a working individual in Paldea. Larry assures Kabu that no apology is needed, and Kabu states that he appreciates the insight. Kabu indicates he is open to listening and encourages Larry to share his feelings about his boss. Larry admits that once he starts discussing his boss, he may never stop.
Later, Kabu is out jogging when he realizes that Team Break are following him. They ambush him using a team of all Water-type Pokémon in an area where Kabu cannot Dynamax, putting him at a disadvantage so they can steal his partner partner Pokémon Centiskorch. Kabu believes they underestimate him and intends to make them reconsider their intentions. At this point, Larry intervenes and informs Kabu that after writing about him in his daily report, his boss instructed him to stay keep in touch with Kabu. Larry asks Kabu if he would like to touch base over lunch. Kabu then asks Larry if he would assist him in defeating Team Break, as he finds himself in a difficult situation. Larry agrees to help, and together, they successfully defeat Team Break.
Days later, Larry talks with Rika, acknowledging that the boss has assigned him additional tasks. Rika mentions that the boss has high expectations for Larry and considers him a top employee. Poppy notes that Larry remains busy even on Pasio. Larry responds by saying it is "hard to say," which disappoints Rika. He then tells Rika and Poppy that he doesn’t have much time to talk since he cannot work any overtime. Rika comments that he sounds more assertive than usual. Larry shares that he has plans to go to the hot springs and eat Hoenn specialties with Kabu after work. Rika tells Larry that sounds like a gratifying end to a work day. Poppy is happy to know that he made friends with Kabu. Rika is surprised and puzzled that Larry finds it "hard to say" if his meet-ups with Kabu are going well, as he is clearly hanging out and having a good time with him.

| Larry | I have to expand my portfolio... |
| Larry | Hmmm... |
| Kabu | What's wrong, Larry? Thinking about work? |
| Larry | Actually, I was thinking about the legwork I need to do to find a decent restaurant. |
| Kabu | Hahaha! That's the spirit! A hearty meal will keep you going, that's for sure! If you find a good spot, let me know! I'd be happy to join you! |
- Veteran Trainers Assemble!
| Name | Text |
|---|---|
| (Lear's villa) | |
| Lear | Looks like everyone's here. Quite a distinguished group of Trainers we've got here... |
| Clay | Heh, of course! We've been around long enough to have tasted all life has to offer—the bitter an' the sweet. |
| Lear | Which is precisely why I've gathered you all here today... Your wealth of experience! You veteran Trainers have amassed a treasure trove of experience, skill, and knowledge... I'd like you to impart your wisdom to the younger generation! Our participants are eager to learn from veteran Trainers from all over the world. |
| Hala | Count me in! Interacting with younger Trainers is time well spent for us, too! |
| Bertha | If an old lady like me can be of any help, I'd be happy to lend a hand. |
| Larry | ... ... ... |
| (Larry thinks of Geeta) | |
| Larry | (The boss is at it again—saddling me with the work of teaching younger Trainers...) (Teaching isn't really my thing...) (Oh well...) (I suppose I could get away with sharing a few stories about how I overcame some rough days at work...) |
| Kabu | Veterans, huh... |
| (Larry looks at Kabu) | |
| Larry | ... ... ... (He doesn't seem too excited about this, either.) |
- Plain and Simple
| Name | Text |
|---|---|
| (Glaciers; Pryce and Wulfric are teaching Selene, Wally, Tate, and Liza) | |
| Pryce | I have known much joy and suffering in my life. Since I am your elder, let me show you what I mean. |
| Wally | Yes, sir! |
| Pryce | Hahaha! No need to be nervous. A Pokémon battle is just a way for us to communicate. |
| Wulfric | You know what? We all talk big about what you learn from battling and bonds and all that, but really, I just do it 'cause it's fun. Who cares about the grandstanding? Let's get to battling! |
| (Pryce, Wulfric, Selene, Wally, Tate, and Liza all send out their Pokémon; transition to Larry teaching Trevor, Tierno, and Shauna) | |
| Larry | ...And that's why your instructions to your Pokémon should be precise and accurate. You don't need fancy moves or outlandish tactics. Just keep things plain and simple. |
| Tierno | Plain and...simple? |
| Larry | When people and Pokémon try to be different from everyone else, they just end up with more work on their plate. |
| Trevor | Um... If you don't mind, may I ask a question about you and Dudunsparce? |
| Larry | I'm sorry, but answering that does not fall within the scope of my responsibilities... |
| Shauna | Whaaaat?! C'mon, don't hold out on us! |
| *beep beep beep* | |
| (Shauna and Trevor are confused) | |
| (Larry glances at his bag, where his Poryphone is ringing) | |
| Larry | ...Time's up. Thank you for your hard work today. I'll be off now. |
| (Larry and his Dudunsparce leave) | |
| Trevor | Th-thank you... |
| Shauna | He just...up and left... |
| (Transition to Larry elsewhere in the city) | |
| ??? | Heya, Larry! |
| (Larry turns around to see Rika and Poppy approach him) | |
| Larry | Rika, Poppy... Good afternoon. |
| Poppy | Nice to see you, too, Mister Larry! |
| Rika | We got curious about how you're doin' as a teacher... Uh... You think maybe you could be a little more amiable? |
| Poppy | Everyone's faces were stiff—like steel! |
| Larry | Hmm... Your feedback is acknowledged...but that's simply how I teach. I'm on my lunch break. If there's nothing else you need to discuss with me, I'll be on my way... |
| (Larry leaves; Rika sighs and shakes her head) | |
| Rika | Even after coming to Pasio, he's still doin' his own thing. |
| (Transition to Larry leaving a restaurant) | |
| Larry | (...That was delicious.) (I can see myself becoming a regular there...) |
| (Larry starts walking forward and nearly runs into Kabu) | |
| Kabu | Hm? |
| Larry | (Him again...) |
| (Flashback to the conversation at the villa) | |
| Kabu | Veterans, huh... |
| (Back to present) | |
| Kabu | You're...Larry, right? From the Paldea region! You were at the workshop earlier! Great to see you again! |
| Larry | Hello... Pleased to make your acquaintance. Here's my business card, if you're interested. |
| Kabu | Why, thank you! How thoughtful. I don't have a business card, but—ah, I know! You can have this! |
| Larry | Thank you. (This is a League Card...) (Kabu, Galar Gym Leader... Started off in Hoenn...) |
| Kabu | Anyhow, those workshops sure are great, huh? I learned a lot from interacting with younger Trainers! After all, life's all about training for as long as you're alive! |
| Larry | ...Shouldn't your training be complete once you've reached a certain age, though? |
| Kabu | Hahaha! I suppose that's another way to think of it! That said, as long as my body can move and my motivation to fight burns strong, I'll keep on running! |
| Larry | I see... I noticed that the word "veteran" didn't seem to sit too well with you. Is that mindset of yours the reason why? |
| Kabu | Well... |
| (Kabu thinks for a moment) | |
| Kabu | Mind if I tell you a bit about myself? |
| (Larry is confused) | |
- The Ever-Burning Man
| Name | Text |
|---|---|
| Kabu | I've been a Trainer for a long time, and I've experienced a lot in the course of my life. There are times, such as today, when I'm even referred to as a "veteran." That said, I'm always going to have the mindset of a rookie. |
| Larry | ...Why is that? |
| Kabu | When I felt stuck in a rut as a Gym Leader, a young man showed me how to get out of it. That young man was Leon, the unbeatable Champion of Galar! |
| Larry | You don't say... |
| Kabu | I moved from Hoenn to Galar because I got scouted. I was burning with motivation, but I wasn't performing as well as I'd hoped. But in my battle with Leon, I found the potential within me that helped me improve! |
| (Flashback to Kabu and Centiskorch battling Leon and Charizard; back to present) | |
| Kabu | Since then, I've had a fresh start, and I'm doing quite well so far in the major division! After going through all that, I don't want to get complacent because people call me a veteran... I'd rather keep burning—fueled and inspired by Trainers of all ages! |
| Larry | ... ... ... I see... |
| The next day... | |
| (Larry is talking to Rika and Poppy near the restaurant) | |
| Larry | ...That's all from me. |
| Rika | Sheesh! And all you had to say was "I see"?! Didn't you feel anything after hearing all that? |
| Poppy | I think maybe he was trying to tell you something, Mister Larry... |
| Larry | Well, I'm not so sure of that... Either way, I felt it best not to voice my own opinion... |
| *beep beep beep* | |
| Larry | Ah. Time to get back to work... |
| (Larry leaves, and Rika hangs her head) | |
| The veteran Trainers continued to teach the younger generations... | |
| (Transition to Blaine teaching Hugh and Nate) | |
| Some with great passion... | |
| Blaine | Whoa, hey! My fiery Rapidash will incinerate all challengers! Hope you brought some Burn Heals! |
| (Transition to Drake teaching Victor and Allister) | |
| Others with extreme boldness... | |
| Drake | First, let me get a glimpse inside your heart... I want to see if you have fighting spirit! Don't hold back! Come at me with everything you've got! |
| (Transition to Larry teaching Shauna, Trevor, and Tierno) | |
| And then there was Larry, who continued to teach in his own simple, ordinary way... | |
| (Kabu, who is teaching Gladion and Lillie nearby, looks at Larry) | |
| Kabu | ... ... ... |
| Lillie | What's the matter? |
| Kabu | Oh, nothing! Let's keep going, shall we? |
| In the blink of an eye, the workshop between the veteran and younger Trainers came to an end. | |
| (Transition to Lear's villa) | |
| Lear | We've gotten positive feedback from the participants! I think it's fair to call this event a success! |
| Hala | That's great news! I'm glad they were satisfied! |
| Wulfric | Hey, how about a little party to celebrate a job well done? |
| Clay | Couldn't've said it better myself! Let's go hog wild! |
| Kabu | Sticking around, Larry? |
| Larry | I appreciate the offer, but I'm afraid I must decline... |
| Pryce | Really? That's a shame. |
| Bertha | It must be difficult having so much work to do. |
| Larry | If you'll excuse me... |
| (Larry starts to leave) | |
| Kabu | Larry. I have an early day tomorrow. Mind if I head back with you? |
| Larry | Not at all... |
- Different Values
| Name | Text |
|---|---|
| (Kabu and Larry walk through the streets of the city at night; Larry eventually stops) | |
| Larry | Kabu... You have something you'd like to discuss with me, don't you? |
| Kabu | Hahaha! You saw right through me, huh. Larry, is it true that you work double duty as a Gym Leader and an Elite Four member? |
| Larry | Yes. We're short-staffed... |
| Kabu | Is that the only reason? I can tell you're a very skilled Trainer, Larry. You were asked to join the workshops as a veteran Trainer, so I'm sure you have lots of experience. |
| Larry | Well...I suppose, somewhat... |
| Kabu | I guess I'm wondering why you're so...meek. And, admittedly, I'm also wondering if you have something weighing on your mind... I thought you might be stuck in the same sort of rut I was in back in the day. |
| Larry | Ah, now I understand. My sincerest apologies for any inconvenience I may have caused. It's nothing like that. |
| Kabu | Really? |
| Larry | Yes. I simply appreciate being ordinary—nothing more. |
| Kabu | Ordinary? |
| Larry | Just as you wish to take on challenges and climb your way to the top... I wish to simply be...ordinary. |
| Kabu | I see. You and I have different values and ways of life. |
| Larry | ...I'm not a passionate Trainer like you, Kabu. If anything does weigh on my mind...I suppose it's that my boss always asks too much of me. |
| Kabu | Bwahahaha! I guess it's tough being a working stiff in Paldea! I didn't realize that was just your style. I'm sorry if I overstepped any boundaries... |
| Larry | No apology necessary. |
| Kabu | Well, you've certainly opened my eyes, Larry! Thank you! If you ever need to vent about that boss of yours, I'm happy to lend you an ear! |
| Larry | If I start talking about her...I may never stop. |
| (Larry and Kabu continue chatting) | |
- Knocking Out Tasks
| Name | Text |
|---|---|
| (Mountains; Kabu is jogging, but stops) | |
| Kabu | ...I know you're there. You've been following me. What do you want? |
| (Three members of Team Break appear behind Kabu) | |
| Masked Man (1) | Heheheh! |
| Masked Man (2) | We've just got some plans, is all! |
| Masked Man (3) | To take you out and steal your precious partner Pokémon! |
| Kabu | You underestimate me. I'll help you rethink your rotten motives! |
| (Kabu sends out Centiskorch; the Masked Men send out Seadra, Golduck, and Pelipper and start attacking) | |
| Masked Man (1) | Hah! What's wrong? |
| Kabu | Guess I'm outnumbered... |
| Masked Man (3) | You haven't seen the worst yet! We're gonna hit you were it REALLY hurts...by making it rain! |
| (Pelipper causes rain to start falling) | |
| Kabu | What?! How did you— |
| Masked Man (2) | You admitted it the other day, remember? You kept going on and on about ALL of your weaknesses! |
| Kabu | ...Of course. You decided to ambush me after hearing me at the workshop. |
| Masked Man (1) | Yeah! We're perfectly prepared to squash you! |
| Masked Man (3) | You don't even have enough room here to Dynamax! |
| Kabu | (This isn't good... Light that fire and get your mind moving, Kabu!) (There still must be a path out of this situation!) |
| ??? | Pardon the interruption... |
| (Kabu turns around and sees Larry approaching him) | |
| Kabu | Larry?! |
| Larry | After I wrote about you in my daily report, my boss told me to keep in touch with you. So I thought I'd ask if you'd like to touch base over lunch... |
| Kabu | In that case, would you like to lend me a hand here, Larry? I'm in a bit of a sticky situation right now—not sure I can get out of it on my own! |
| Larry | Understood. |
| (Larry puts away his briefcase and sends out Dudunsparce) | |
| Larry | Well, let's knock this task off our list, then. |
| Kabu | OK! Time to resume my lecture... Hope you're ready for an earful... Old-timers like us tend to spin quite the yarn! |
| (Centiskorch cries out, and the Team Break members get nervous; fade to black) | |
| Days later... | |
| (Fade in on Larry walking through the city) | |
| Larry | (No sooner do I finish a task than the next one comes in...) (The boss is always working me to the bone...) |
| ??? | Mister Larry! |
| (Rika and Poppy appear and wave) | |
| Rika | What, did our fearless commander pile more work onto your plate or somethin'? |
| Larry | Indeed she did... |
| Rika | Nahahaha! She sure expects a lot outta you, Larry! |
| Poppy | You're still busy, even on Pasio! |
| Rika | Well, that's a super employee for ya! Anyways, you seem like you're doin' OK, despite the intense workload and all. Your meet-ups with Kabu goin' well? |
| Larry | Hard to say. |
| Rika | *sigh* Hard to say...? |
| Larry | Oops... Sorry, I don't have much time to chat. I'm in a hurry to wrap up my tasks. I simply cannot work any overtime today. |
| Rika | You're soundin' a bit more assertive than usual. Somethin' up? |
| Larry | ...I have plans to go to the hot springs and eat Hoenn specialties with Kabu after work. |
| Rika | You're doin' WHAT?! Man, good for you! That sure sounds like a gratifyin' end to the workday. |
| Larry | I'll be on my way, then. |
| (Larry leaves) | |
| Poppy | Oh, my! He made friends with Mister Kabu! |
| Rika | Wait a minute... "Hard to say"?! When they're CLEARLY hangin' out and havin' a good time?! |
