Poké War Games (Japanese: 激突！ ポケモン合戦！ Clash! Pokémon Battle!) was a costume event in Pokémon Masters EX. It was focused on the sync pairs Diantha (Special Costume) & Keldeo, Hilda (Special Costume) & Diancie, Guzma (Special Costume) & Buzzwole, and Jasmine (Special Costume) & Celesteela.
This event featured a main storyline—Poké War Games—which featured all four sync pairs, and sub-story areas—Battle Prep stories—for each of the featured sync pairs.
Poké War Games was contained in a separate event menu from the Battle Prep stories, consisting of several story areas. It also contained two Battle Challenges, where players were challenged to defeat a team of strong opponents. Players could complete event missions by clearing these areas with teams using various theme skills, earning medals and Move Candy Coins of various roles. In addition, these event missions rewarded players with Golden Spheres, one for each of the featured sync pairs. Unlike most event items, Golden Spheres are not automatically exchanged for coins.
In the Battle Prep stories, players could earn vouchers from battles that could be redeemed in the shop. All battles could be challenged an unlimited number of times except Daily Extreme Battles, which could only be challenged once per day. Extra vouchers were automatically exchanged with coins once the event was finished.
First run
The event first ran from October 29 to December 10, 2021. The "Diantha Seasonal Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Diantha (Special Costume) & Keldeo for the duration of the event. The "Hilda Seasonal Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Hilda (Special Costume) & Diancie starting on November 4, 2021 and lasting until the end of the event. The "Guzma Seasonal Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Guzma (Special Costume) & Buzzwole starting on November 11, 2021 and lasting until the end of the event. The "Jasmine Seasonal Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Jasmine (Special Costume) & Celesteela starting on November 18, 2021 and lasting until the end of the event.
During this run, there were four different Battle Prep stories available: Diantha's Battle Prep, Hilda's Battle Prep, Guzma's Battle Prep, and Jasmine's Battle Prep. Each Battle Prep story could be unlocked using a Story Key, which could be obtained by completing story areas in Poké War Games. Two of the Poké War Games story areas were available at the start of the event, and a new story area was added each week until all five story areas had been added. The Battle Prep stories could be unlocked in any order. Extra Story Keys were automatically exchanged with coins once the event was finished.
The Battle Challenge areas were also added over the course of the event. The first two areas, Grimsley's Battle Challenge! Part 1 and Grimsley's Battle Challenge! Part 2, became available on November 4, 2021. The second two areas, Glacia's Battle Challenge! Part 1 and Glacia's Battle Challenge! Part 2, became available on November 18, 2021.
Second run
The event reran from September 8 to October 3, 2022. The "Super Spotlight Costume Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Diantha (Special Costume) & Keldeo, Hilda (Special Costume) & Diancie, Guzma (Special Costume) & Buzzwole, and Jasmine (Special Costume) & Celesteela for the duration of the event.
During this run, all the Battle Prep stories were combined into one event menu, called Battle Prep. Story Keys were no longer needed to unlock them, and as such were no longer available from completing story areas in Poké War Games. All story areas in Poké War Games were unlocked by completing the previous story area, and thus the whole main storyline could be played through without interruption. In addition, the Battle Challenge areas were available as soon as the player completed the main storyline.
If the player had obtained a Golden Sphere in the previous run and obtained the same sphere again, the duplicate sphere would be converted into a 3★ Power-Up.
Third run
The event reran again from December 12 to 30, 2024. Like in the previous run, the "Super Spotlight Costume Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Diantha (Special Costume) & Keldeo, Hilda (Special Costume) & Diancie, Guzma (Special Costume) & Buzzwole, and Jasmine (Special Costume) & Celesteela for the duration of the event. Aside from small changes to battle and mission rewards, everything was the same as the previous run.
Plot
Filmed live by the player from his villa, Lear announces a new event that's being held to promote Pasio: the Battle of the Golden Spheres. For this event, he'll be creating two teams of sync pairs, each led by two leaders in special costumes. During the event, they'll hide five golden spheres across Pasio for the teams to find and bring back to their camps, and the team that collects the most golden spheres wins. In addition, sync pairs can take golden spheres from the other team by beating them in Pokémon battles. Cameras will follow the participants around and stream their battles to spectators, so the sync pairs need to work with their teammates to make their battles entertaining. Lear has already appointed the leaders of each team—four Trainers who partnered up with interesting Pokémon—and will give them access to his wardrobe of clothes from other regions so they can wear suitably flashy costumes. Then, to the player's shock, he asks them to help with filming during the event as well. Since Lear needs to get to his next appointment, he, Rachel, and Sawyer say good-bye to the audience and tell them to look forward to the event.
When the day of the event arrives, Lear summons the leaders of each team to the villa: Guzma, who has partnered with Buzzwole; Jasmine, who has partnered with Celesteela; Diantha, who has partnered with Keldeo; and Hilda, who has partnered with Diancie. The leaders exchange a few words and then head back to their base camps to begin the event. The base camp for Guzma and Jasmine's team is in a forest full of trees with red leaves. As soon as the game officially starts, Guzma is leading his team into battle. Koga and Janine vanish with their ninja tricks, while Erika, Valerie, and Falkner head off together. Jasmine wants to keep up with them but finds it hard to move in her costume. Grimsley appears in his kimono, tells her to move at her own pace, and offers to stay with her.
Meanwhile, at the base camp for Diantha and Hilda's team in the villa, the team captains swap stories they've heard about each other's partner Pokémon. Wikstrom asks Diantha what their battle strategy should be, and Diantha poses the question to the whole group. Lt. Surge suggests that they split up to look for spheres. Siebold notes that it'd be safer to travel in a large group, but it would slow them down, so it's not ideal for this event. Diantha agrees that spreading out is the best strategy, so the rest of her team, including Glacia, Korrina, and Fantina, prepares to split up and head out.
In a cave, Wikstrom, Glacia, and Siebold come across a golden sphere. The three start taking it back to their base camp, but they have to go through the other team's forest to get there. They get ambushed by Koga, Janine, and Guzma, who easily defeat them and take their golden sphere. Elsewhere in the forest, Jasmine and Grimsley battle and defeat a Pokémon Ranger and two Ace Trainers from the other team, forcing them to retreat. To Jasmine's dismay, she and Grimsley haven't made it very far from camp because of how restrictive her costume is. Grimsley assures her that she can just take it easy, but she really wants to support her team. So, Grimsley suggests a strategy that uses her defensive moves to their advantage, which requires them to head into enemy territory.
By the fountain in town, Erika, Valerie, and Falkner have Hilda cornered with a golden sphere. Hilda flashes back to earlier, when she found the golden sphere in town alongside a Collector and a Rising Star. She noticed Falkner watching them from the shadows and suspected that he wasn't making a move yet because he didn't have backup, which gave her an idea. Her teammates were worried that the plan wouldn't work, but Hilda encouraged them to give it a try. However, in the present, Hilda's Diancie is getting beaten up by the three Gym Leaders, while some onlookers have gathered to watch the event. Hilda laughs and reveals that running away was part of her strategy all along, and Diantha's Keldeo suddenly appears and knocks the Gym Leaders' Pokémon back. Diantha arrives alongside Keldeo, and Falkner is shocked that she had time to contact reinforcements. Hilda explains that she lured them here while her teammates fetched Diantha, pretending to have no backup, and she and Diantha work together to defeat Erika, Valerie, and Falkner and keep the golden sphere. Hilda reveals that this is their team's second golden sphere, and Diantha compliments Hilda on her efforts to make the battle captivating for the audience, something that she was preparing for before the event. Then, the two team leaders head back to their base camp.
Meanwhile, Guzma has brought a golden sphere back to his team's base camp. He and Buzzwole are preparing to head back out when a Black Belt and Street Thug report that the enemy team stole a golden sphere from them. Guzma declares that they'll just steal the sphere back. Korrina, Lt. Surge, and Fantina are celebrating their success and preparing to bring there sphere back to their camp, but Jasmine and Celesteela arrive, having just stolen a golden sphere from two Ace Trainers on the other team. Despite their best efforts, Korrina, Lt. Surge, and Fantina are unable to defeat Jasmine, and she takes their golden sphere as well. Jasmine and Grimsley celebrate their victory, and Guzma congratulates her on her work. Suddenly, Diantha and Hilda arrive with two golden spheres of their own. Guzma notes that they've now brought together all the spheres still in play, and Diantha realizes this battle will decide the winner of the event. The team leaders exchange a few words and prepare for a showdown. Grimsley watches from a tunnel nearby, choosing not to get involved, and the four team leaders' Pokémon clash.
