Fishing Up a Golden New Year (Japanese: 黄金の新年つり大会! Golden New Year Fishing Tournament!) was a story event in Pokémon Masters EX. It was focused on the sync pairs Sygna Suit Ball Guy & Electrode, Lana (New Year's 2026) & Dondozo, and Linnea (Furisode Girl) & Aromatisse.
The "Sygna Suit Ball Guy EX Fair" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Sygna Suit Ball Guy & Electrode for the duration of the event, and the "Lana Seasonal Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Lana (New Year's 2026) & Dondozo starting on January 3, 2026 and lasting until the end of the event.
Players could team up with Linnea (Furisode Girl) & Aromatisse by completing the final story area of the event, Clothes to Remember Forever.
During this event, players could earn event points by completing battles. Players received rewards based on the number of points accumulated, including items to power up Linnea (Furisode Girl) & Aromatisse, a Field Move Candy Coin, a 5★ Power-Up, and medals. All battles could be challenged an unlimited number of times except Daily Extreme Battle 1, which could only be challenged once per day.

For the duration of the event, a splash screen featuring art of Sygna Suit Ball Guy & Electrode and Lana (New Year's 2025) & Dondozo was displayed when opening the game.
Plot
In Centra City, Lear addresses to an assembled crowd about the abundance of Pokemon that Hoopa had accidentally let loose on Pasio at the beginning of the year, and asks them for help to locate the remainder which had escaped into the surrounding ocean. At Nessa's suggestion, Lear agrees to turn it into a fishing competition to gain more volunteers, with a special prize for the one with the biggest catch.
Elsewhere, Akari and Rei are holding a workshop about Hisuian Poké Balls at the behest of Ball Guy, who has dressed up in a sygna suit to better their bond with the Hisuian Electrode they had caught in a space-time distortion. After the workshop is over, Linnea stays behind to inquire more about Ball Guy's headgear. At Akari's request, Linnea reveals herself to be an apprentice for Valerie, though she also admits that compared to the others, her skills in designing and Pokemon battling are lacking. Linnea is receptive to Ball Guy's suggestion of obtaining a sygna suit of her own to improving her skills, though not as confident to Rei's idea of entering the fishing competition to prove her bond with her Pokemon, having never fished before.
Lana arrives to offer Linnea her experience in helping her fish, and brings her along to a river with Ball Guy tagging along for support. After Lana fishes up a Magikarp in demonstration, Linnea's first attempt takes a bit longer for something to bite, so Lana takes her mind off in the meantime by asking about her dream to design an outfit like a sygna suit. She shares her own dream in reeling up a big catch, and hopes that both their dreams will come true thanks to this fishing competition. Just after Ball Guy promises to help them celebrate with a fireworks show if both their dreams indeed come true, Linnea feels a strong bite and has her Aromatisse use her scent to calm down the Seaking and reel it in.
While the trio are celebrating their first success, Lana gets a call from Nessa, who reveals she reeled in a large catch that Misty identifies as a Dondozo. While Linnea worries Nessa may take first place, the latter instead reveals something she noticed from her catch: namely, it having a similar scale that's bigger and golden stuck to it. The three Water-type Trainers quickly deduce that a larger Dondozo of a different color may still be out there, which Nessa admits she shared the intel with Lana for the sake of sportsmanship. While Lana is concerned that she still hasn't finished teaching Linnea about fishing, the latter assures her that they can focus on Lana's dream first.
As time passes and with no Pokemon biting, Linnea and Ball Guy are becoming more dejected about the possibility that the Dondozo having been caught by someone else or it having retreated further. Lana is still optimistic: she talks about how the key to fishing, much like starting a new experience, is being patient, and even if all the trial and error may appear to be yielding nothing, the build up will be satisfying once you end up accomplishing your goal. Right on cue, she immediately feels a bite and reel in the Shiny Dondozo with much difficulty, and sends out her Araquanid to battle. Even when Dondozo unexpectedly Terastallizes into a Dragon type, Lana turns down Linnea and Ball Guy's help, declaring fishing to be a one-on-one battle between the fisher and their quarry, and succeeds in catching the Big Catfish Pokemon after a long battle.
Some time later, Lear announces the results of the competition, revealing Lana's new Dondozo to be the largest catch. Afterwards, Linnea offers Lana a new outfit she made for her in celebration of her dream, which also earns Linnea Valerie's seal of approval. Recognising how both of their dreams came true, Ball Guy also quickly excuses themselves to set off the fireworks display they promised.
