Totodile (Japanese: ワニノコ Waninoko) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

It evolves into Croconaw starting at level 18, which evolves into Feraligatr starting at level 30.

Along with Chikorita and Cyndaquil, Totodile is one of the three starter Pokémon of Johto available at the beginning of Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver.

Biology

Totodile is a bipedal, crocodilian Pokémon with well-developed jaws. It has red eyes with ridges above them, black markings around its eyes, and several sharp teeth. On its chest is a yellow, V-shaped marking that extends to its arms; there is a thin line through the center of the marking. Totodile has five fingers and three toes. Down its back is a row of three red spines with a small, red ridge on either side. The tip of its tail has a single red spine as well. Totodile tends to be playful by nature and has a habit of biting anything it sees, including its Trainer. However, its jaws are capable of crushing anything, so it sometimes causes serious injuries. Totodile is scarce in the wild, though it can be found around bodies of water like rivers, ponds, and lakes.

Evolution

Totodile evolves into Croconaw, which evolves into Feraligatr.

(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Totodile was the only Generation II starter Pokémon to appear only as a random trophy, not in a Poké Ball.

Melee trophy information

"Little but feisty is the best description for these Water-type Pokémon. The first thing they do when they see something move is latch onto it with their powerful jaws. Totodile was one of the three Pokémon that Professor Elm offered to Trainers in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. They evolve into Croconaw."

Brawl trophy information

"A Big Jaw Pokémon. This alligator-like Pokémon stands on two legs. It has a small body but an impressive jaw that boasts potent bite power. It can do serious damage to someone even if it's just playing. Its tendency to chomp down on anything that moves in front of it means Trainers have to be extra cautious around it. When it levels up, it evolves into Croconaw."

Detective Pikachu

A Totodile appeared in Detective Pikachu.

Trivia

Origin

Totodile appears to be based on a baby crocodilian. The yellow marking on its chest may be a reference to the yellow stripes on young American alligators. In Pokémon Sleep, Totodile and its evolutions are revealed to sleep with one eye open, just like real-life crocodiles. The crest on Totodile's head is similar to the mohawk hairstyle which may allude to Totodile's boisterous personality.

Name origin

Totodile may be a combination of tot and crocodile.

Waninoko may be taken to mean 鰐の子 wani no ko (child of a crocodile/alligator).
