Marshadow (Japanese: マーシャドー Marshadow) is a dual-type Fighting/Ghost Mythical Pokémon introduced in Generation VII.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Marshadow was officially revealed on April 7, 2017.

Marshadow is the last Pokémon in the Alola Pokédex in Sun and Moon, before the Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon expansion.

In the anime, it is associated with Ho-Oh.

Biology

Artwork of Zenith Marshadow

Marshadow is a humanoid Pokémon that appears to be made of smoky gray shadows. The area around its face resembles headgear, such as a helmet. On top of the helmet are two curled horns or ears with a wispy horn between them. Its eyes are orange-red with yellow pupils, and above each eye is a yellow, oval marking. Each arm has a small bump on the wrist. Around its neck is a smoky collar, and there is a trail of shadows on each foot.

When angered or attacking, such as while using its exclusive Z-Move, Marshadow's fighting spirit will begin to burn[1], causing it to become Zenith Marshadow[2]. In this state, its headgear, wrist bumps, and collar flare up and resemble green and yellow flames. Marshadow's eyes also flare up when in this state, but do not change in color.

Very few people have seen it, so its existence has been the stuff of legends and myths. A cautious Pokémon, Marshadow sinks into the shadows to ensure it is not noticed while it observes its surroundings, much like how Gengar can. While hiding in the shadows of others, it can understand their feelings and copy their abilities. Through mimicry, it will eventually become more powerful than those it imitates. It can even learn the ultimate technique of martial arts masters it copies. As seen in the anime, Marshadow is also capable of causing nightmares.

Marshadow is the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Spectral Thief. Marshadow is also the only known Pokémon capable of using the Z-Move Soul-Stealing 7-Star Strike.

Trivia

A normal Zenith Marshadow (left) and a Shiny Zenith Marshadow (right)
  • Unlike other Pokémon, Marshadow's normal and Shiny colorations are exactly the same in its normal form, only having different colors in its Zenith form. In Generation VIII, it is the only Pokémon with this trait. In Generation VII, Magearna shares this trait with Marshadow, although this is not the case for Original Color Magearna. In Pokémon HOME, the artwork for a Shiny Marshadow has a slightly lighter, almost indistinguishable, shade of gray than a normal Marshadow.
  • Marshadow's effort value yield of two Attack and one Speed is unique.
  • Marshadow's Japanese name and its romanization were revealed on April 10, 2016 as a result of its trademark filing.
  • In Pokémon Sun and Moon, Marshadow has a base experience yield of 120.
  • In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Shiinotic is defined internally as a Mythical Pokémon instead of Marshadow. This is likely due to a typo between their internal names, with マシェード MASHEEDO (Shiinotic) being mistaken for マーシャドー MAASYADOO (Marshadow).[3]
  • Although Marshadow does not appear in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Raifort's hair pin resembles its face.

Origin

Marshadow may be based on the shadowboxing exercise. It also shares traits with Nightmarchers and Menehune from Hawaiian mythology.

Name origin

Marshadow may be a combination of martial arts, nightmarcher, and shadow.
