History
May has experienced similar events to her core series counterpart as the rival character. May received her first partner Pokémon, Torchic, from her father Professor Birch. She also formed a rivalry with her new neighbor Brendan. While on her journey, May mostly focus on Contests rather than battling, but she did encounter and battle Team Magma and Team Aqua. Along her journey May caught a Mudkip, and a Wailmer. Her Torchic eventually evolved into Blaziken. While doing fieldwork with her father, she met her Lopunny and her Latias, with the latter being attracted to her Pokéblocks.

Description May is a cheerful girl and the daughter of Professor Birch from the Hoenn region. She's great at taking care of others and loves cute Pokémon and conducting fieldwork.

May (Japanese: ハルカ Haruka) is a Pokémon Trainer in Pokémon Masters EX, based on the character of the same name in the core series games. She forms a sync pair with Mudkip and its evolutions, Marshtomp and Swampert, with Swampert being capable of Mega Evolving. The sync pair can be obtained through the sync pair scout, starting from January 14, 2021. The pair's potential can be upgraded to Masters EX star.png 6★ EX, which unlocks May's EX style.

May is also available in her spring attire, partnered alongside Lopunny, which is capable of Mega Evolving. The pair could be obtained through a limited-time seasonal sync pair scout and was first available on April 2, 2021. This pair is also capable of being upgraded to Masters EX star.png 6★ EX from when the pair was first released.

May is also available in her Anniversary attire, partnered alongside Latias, which is capable of Mega Evolving. The pair could be obtained through a limited-time Poké Fair sync pair scout and was first available on February 28, 2022. This pair is also capable of being upgraded to Masters EX star.png 6★ EX.

Reason: History & Role in Pokémon Masters EX

History

May has experienced similar events to her core series counterpart as the rival character. May received her first partner Pokémon, Torchic, from her father Professor Birch.[3] She also formed a rivalry with her new neighbor Brendan.[4] While on her journey, May mostly focus on Contests rather than battling, but she did encounter and battle Team Magma and Team Aqua. Along her journey May caught a Mudkip, and a Wailmer. Her Torchic eventually evolved into Blaziken. While doing fieldwork with her father, she met her Lopunny and her Latias, with the latter being attracted to her Pokéblocks.[5]

Mudkip → Marshtomp → Swampert

Mudkip can evolve into Marshtomp once it has reached level 30 through its sync pair story Mudkip's Evolution, and then into Swampert once it has reached level 45 through its sync pair story Marshtomp's Evolution.

Trivia

  • May is based on the rival in the Hoenn-based games, as her character description mentions that her father is Professor Birch.
  • May's EX outfit could be a reference to her Pokémon Adventures counterpart, Sapphire.
  • In Brendan's sync pair story, he mentions that May focuses on Contests, while Professor Birch focuses on fieldwork.
  • In a Pokémon Center Conversation, and in the Story event Pasio Eggsplorers, May has expressed interest in becoming a Pokémon Professor like her father[6]
  • According to May, she met her Lopunny while doing fieldwork with her father.
    • Her Latias was also met during fieldwork, being attracted to her Pokéblocks.
  • Prior to version 2.19.0, May (Spring 2021) exclusively used the same lines as her regular counterpart. She shares these qualities with Burgh (Spring 2021).
  • In her sygna suit's sync pair story, May said that she had Blaziken ever since he was a Torchic, with them battling Brendan throughout their journey in the Hoenn region.
  • All versions of May use special voice-over lines upon entering a team that contains certain Trainers (regardless of their partner Pokémon). Those Trainers include Brendan, Wally, Norman, and Steven.
    • May also uses special voice-over lines upon winning a battle with Brendan, Wally, or Steven in the same team.
  • May is the only Trainer able to form four sync pairs which use Mega Evolution.
  • May and Elaine are the only player characters who have never been able to be battled in Pokémon Masters EX.

Origin

May's design is based on her appearance in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Mudkip is one of the first partner Pokémon of Hoenn in the core series games. Swampert's Mega Stone is automatically obtained during the story of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire if the player chooses Mudkip, allowing Swampert to Mega Evolve. As the rival character, Mudkip and its evolutions are May's signature Pokémon if the player chooses Torchic as their first partner Pokémon in the Hoenn-based core series games, with her Mega Evolving her Swampert in a post-credits battle in the remakes. In addition, May has been depicted with Mudkip and its evolutions in the Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire Animated Trailer, while her Pokémon Adventures counterpart temporarily uses Ruby's Swampert during the manga. Mudkip, Marshtomp, and Swampert's Dex entries come from Pokémon Ruby.

Wailmer is a Pokémon that May uses as the rival character if the player chooses Treecko or Mudkip as their first partner Pokémon in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire. In addition, May's Pokémon Adventures counterpart owns Wailmer's evolved form Wailord. Wailmer's Dex entry comes from Pokémon Ultra Sun.

While May is not known to own a Lopunny in the core series games, Lopunny's Mega Evolution was introduced in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. It may also be a reference to the Easter Bunny. Lopunny's Dex entry comes from Pokémon Ultra Sun.

Latias is a Legendary Pokémon that is automatically obtained at Southern Island during the story of Alpha Sapphire. She is also holding her Mega Stone when obtained, allowing her to Mega Evolve. In addition, May is shown to own and Mega Evolve her Latias in the Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire Animated Trailer. Latias's Dex entry comes from Pokémon Ruby.

Blaziken is the final evolution of Torchic, one of the first partner Pokémon of Hoenn in the core series games. Blaziken's Mega Stone is automatically obtained during the story of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire if the player chooses Torchic, allowing Blaziken to Mega Evolve. As the rival character, Blaziken is May's signature Pokémon if the player chooses Treecko as their first partner Pokémon in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, with May Mega Evolving her Blaziken in a post-credits battle. In addition, May's anime and Pokémon Adventures counterparts have both been depicted with a Blaziken, with the latter having also been shown Mega Evolving it. Blaziken's Dex entry comes from Pokémon Ruby.
